IMPROVEMENT IN HOSE-NOZZLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,478, dated May 16, 1876; application filed April 26, 1876.
.on, to be a full, clear, and 'exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view; Fig. 2, a vertical central section; and in Fig.3, a detached view.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of hoze-nozzles, the object being to .provide for cutting off or stopping the flow through the hose without the necessity of going to the hydrant or head. It 0011- sists in an india-rubber or elastic sleeve within the nozzle, combined with transverse slides working toward the center, so as to compress the sleeve and cause it to close the passage through the nozzle, all as'more fully hereinafter described. y
A represents the body of the nozzle; 13, the tip, which may be of any of theknown constructions; G, the socket, by which thenozzle is attached to the hose. a is an india-rubber or elastic sleeve (denoted in solid black lines) arranged within the nozzle, and secured at its upper and lower ends. D is a collar, concentric with the nozzle, and arranged so as to turn freely.
stops the flow.
On this collar is. a flange, d, turned inward in a horizontal plane, and with a thread cut on its surface in scroll form, and onto this threaded surface [there is placed a pair of slides, E. upon opposite sides, these slides, provided with ribs 6, (see Fig. 2,) corresponding to the scroll-thread or grooves on the flange at, so that by turning the collar D the slides E will be moved toward or from each other, according to the direction of revolution of the collar D. These slides work through slots f and against the surface of the sleeve a, and that sleeve, being elastic, yields as the slides are forced against it, until brought completely together, as indicated in broken lines, Fig. 2, which closes the passage and Returning, the collar 1) will draw back the slides E and open the passage.
The discharge may be regulated by means of these slides, if desired. The principal object is to allow the cutting off of the flow by the person in charge of the pipe.
We claim In a hoze-nozzle, the combination of the elastic sleeve a, the scroll -threaded collar D, and the slides E, constructed and operating substantially as specified.
