This invention vrelates to a process of and means for making matches having splints of permeable combustible material; its objectf` -row by row, andthereby rigidly held/in 4*spaced parallel relation. f i,
' designates a vsuitably-located sprayer being to provide for the economical and ei"- licient treatment of the splints with a mate-' rial, such as ammonium phosphate, which is eective to limit the flame to a relatively small portion of the splint when a match is ignited,
and which material is also effective to prevent the glowing of the burnt or charred part of the splint when the flame is extinguished.
The invention is especially designed forA use 1n connection with a match making maV chine of the class wherein theV splints are inserted endwise, row by row, in an endless ca'rrier and thereby rigidly held in spaced paral` lel relation .and transported through the@ match making path, including wax (as para-f-Y fin) and head compositionapplying mecha# nism.
Incarrying out the invention in the preferred way the projecting match splints, supportedin spaced parallel relation by the car-T rier, are impregnated with a fire-resisting sO- klution, such as ammonium phosphate of suiii-- cient concentration to impart the requisite fire-resisting characteristic toy the'isplints. The concentrated impregnating material, in the free end portions of the splints, to an extent substantially corresponding with theV desired inflammable area of the splints, is reduced by a solvent to a conditionwhich permits the burning of the splints, when dried,
yet prevents their `glowing when thev flame is eXtinguished.
The splints thus treatedk travel through a suitable drying zone, and theirl free impreg-'- nated end portions, when dry, are'dipped 'to' asuitable depth into molten wax, as paraffin.
The splints 'are then exposed to the. atmos i phereior a brief interval to allow the wax to set, whereupon the free extremities of the` splints are tipped with ignitable composition or compositions to ,form the match he'ad's.- The matches thus produced are conveyed through a suitable drying Space, whence they are discharged from the carrier and packed.

5. In a match machine, the combination with a carrier for match splints, of means for impregnating the splints with a fire-resisting solution, means for reducing, by a solvent,
the concentration of the solution in the free f ends of the splints to a depth substantially corresponding with the desired inflammable area of the splints, means for drying the impregnated splints, means for treating the reduced impregnated portions of the splints with wax, and means for applying head compositionto the free ends ofthe waxed por-V tions of the splints.
