Description

Aug. 19, 1930. I A. M. HUNT 1,773,103
STOKER DI STRI BUT ING MEANS Filed Jan. 2'7, 1925 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 19, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFF'ICE ANDREW M. HUNT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO STANDARD STOKER COMPANY, INCORPORATED, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE s'roxna msranornts mmns Application filed Iilanuary 27, 1925. Serial No. 5,027
' This invention relates to stokers and particularly to an improved means for distributlngz oal over the fire by jets of steam or other In the embodiment of my invention herein illustrated, I have shown a locomotive stoker wherein coal is mechanically conveyed from the locomotive tender to a point in the fire-box below the grate and is then elevated through a suitable conduit toa point above the fire where it is acted upon by jets of steam or other fluid which carry and distribute the coal evenly over the fire.
' Among the objects of my invention is to improve the efficiency of the coal distributing jets'by increasing the kinetic energy and carrying power of the steam as it issues from r the jet forming openings. For this purpose, I form jet forming openings of progressively increasing area and I so arrange these openings as to obtain a maximum efiect on the entire mass of coal delivered to the fire box.
Various other objects and advantages of my invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which shows one embodiment of my invention and wherein Fig. 1 is a side view, partly in section, of the forward end of a stoker disclosing my improved distributing means, Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion o f the structure shown in F ig. 1, Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 38 of Fig.
. 1, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the jet distributing head.
Referring to Fig. 1, the numeral 10 represents the rear water leg of a locomotive boiler on the fuel core at one side 'as it rises; and
provided with a feed door opening 11 above the cab deck 12. Goal is carried from the locomotive tender (not shown) by means of a conduit 15 which contains the conveyor screw 16; At the forward end of the conduit 15 is "an elbow 18 and in the form of stoker illustrated, the conveyor screw 16 terminates at the elbow and the remainder of the conveyv ing-conduit is formed as an u wardly extending slightly expanding section 20 which is free from any conveying mechanism. The section 20 terminates in a discharge mouth 21 which is surrounded b the protective gratS 22 and is provided wit a steam jet distr1butributor tor 24. The distributor comprises a distributor head 25 having substantially radial expanding nozzles or openings 26-which are supplied from separate steam chambers 29 formed in the distributor head. Each of these chambers is supplied with steam by a v pipe 27 as shown. Each of the pipes is provided with an adjustable valve 28, one only.
ward curve of the elbow and through the unobstructed section 20 to the mouth 21, where it comes into the path of the steam jets, which issue from the openings 26. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, these openings are arranged so that the series of jets form a sheet or sheets of propelling fluid which pick up and carry the coal as it issues from the mouth 21 and distribute it over the fire. In the preferred form of my invention, the openings 26 expand laterally, rather than vertically, and in this manner I confine the sheet of propelling fluid to the proper vertical dimensions.
It will be'observed that by the present invention there is provided in combination in a locomotive stoker, open-mouthed means for elevating fuel in the combustion chamber in'a s mmetrical consolidated core, a disliead adjacent to the mouth of said means and having a wedge-shaped bottom partly overlying said mouth and operative that said distributor head has a steam supply and also a jet forming .opening flaring or spreading progressively outward in a horizontal direction and disposed at an angle to the fuel core, the construction being such thatthe pressure head of steam is rapidly converted into velocity and the jet is spread out fan-wise in such a position as to slice or cut oil? the top portion of the advancing fuel core immediately after it passes out of the mouth of the elbowed conduit, which, to-
gether with the feed screw, is comprised in the said open mouthed means.
vancing fuel core. 2. In a locomotive stoker, open-mouthed I claim:
1. In a locomotive stoker, open-mouthed means for elevating fuel in the combustion chamber in asymmetrical consolidated core, and a distributor head adjacent to the mouth of said means and having a wedge-shaped' bottom partly overlying said mouth and operative on said core at one side as it rises, said distributor head having a steam supply and a jet-forming opening flaring progressively outward in a horizontal direction and.
disposed at an angle to the core of the fuel to rapidly convert the pressurehead of steam into velocity and spread the jet fan-wise to slice or cut ofi the top of the upwardl admeans for elevating fuel into the combustion chamber in a symmetrical core, and a distributor head adjacent to the mouth of said means,,said distributor head having a steam supply and a passage o enin therefrom, which flares laterally an wit out vertical flaring from its inlet to its outlet for converting the pressure head of the steam into velocity and for spreadin a jet of steam therefrom fan-wise so that it is horizontall disposed and at an angle to the core of fue said Jet operating to slice or cut ofi the top portion of the upwardly advancing fuel core whose movement-is always at substantially {right angles to the fan-wise steam jet..
, 3. In a locomotive stoker, open-mouthed means for elevating fuel into the combustion chamber in a syminetrical consolidated core, and a distributor head attached to the mouth portion of said means within the combustion chamber of the locomotive and having a wedge-shaped bottom to prevent obstruction of a side portion of the fuel core as it leaves the mouth of said means, said distributor head'having a steam suppl and a plurality rs above said of separate steam eham wedge-shaped bottom,
and also a plurality ofi radially disposed assageways leading from said steam ch'am rs, which pass eways flare horizontally from inlet to outlet or v converting the pressure head of steam rap- 'ldly into velocity and, for spreading the jets therefrom into a continuous horizontal sheet which is eflecti've to shoe or cut ofl the top of the upwardly advancin fuel core.
