COVER AND GRATE COMBIN'I'IONv FORVSTOVE LID OPENINGS Filed sept. 24, 1924 v- INVENTORS IC.WE/5/`7/7/7 ATTORNEY Patented Aug. l2, 1930 UNirED STATES JOHN C. WEISMAN VAND GUSTAV A. HUETTEMAN,
OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGN- ORS TO HAMMER-BRAY COMPANY, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA covna AND GRATE COMBINATION Foiek sTovE-LID OPENINGS Application mea september 24, 192,4. serial No. 739,553.
Our invention relates to a cover and grate particularly designed for positioning in the lid opening above a gas burner of a closed-top gas stove.
An object of the invention is-to provide means ofthe character described which will permit of the grate being removably supported in the lid-opening regardless of whether the cover is or is not engaged in such opening.
Another object of the invention is to pro? vide means of the character described in which the removable grate will be fully concealed when both the cover and grate are supported in the opening.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of our invention which is illustrated in kthe drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as we may adopt variations of the ypreferred form within the scope of our invention as set forth in the claims.
Referring to said drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of a closed-top gas-stove showing both the cover and grate positioned in the lid-opening.
Figure 2 is a sectionalview similar to Figure 1, but showing two lid-openings. The grate is removed from the lid opening at the left, while at the right the grate alone engages the opening.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a portion of the stove as shown in Figure 2, except that the lid-opening at the left is without cover or grate.
As previously stated, the device of our invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with closed-top gas stoves, that is, the type in which the top ranged in a compartment provided with a cooking top, the latter being in the form of a plate having removable lids engaging in openings formed therein and overlying the burners. In accordance with the foregoing, 50 the means of our invention is illustrated in kto have a. grate gas burners are arconnection with a stove 5 er chamber 6 which is closed by a cooking plate 7. The latter is provided with lid openings 8 which are preferably located directly tbove the top burners 9 arranged in the cham- To satisfy the dilerent requirements of cooking, it is sometimes desirable to have the lid-opening completely covered by an Vimp'erforate lid, while atother times it is desirable to have the opening 'entirely unobstructed; and again it may be advantageous in the opening, it beingfdesirable in connection with such latter arrangement that the grate be of the full size of the opening. Vith the means of our invention, each and all of the foregoing conditions can be readily realized. Incarrying out the foregoing, we have provided a lid or cover 12 and a grate 13 which arear'ranged to be supported in the opening 8 in such manner that either may lbe vvsupported in the opening independently of the other, or both may be simultaneously supported therein, or both may be removed therefrom.
As here shown, we form around the sides of the lid-opening an inwardly extending iange 14 upon the upper surface 16 of which the cover is arranged to rest. The surface 16 is disposed sufficiently below the top of the cooking plate to cause the top of the cover to lie flush with the top of the plate. Preferably formed in the flange and extending below the surface 16 are a plurality of recesses 17 in which are arranged to seat a plurality of lugs 18 protruding from the grate 13. In this manner the grate may be effectively and removably supported in the openings independently ofthe cover. It will thus be noted that while both the cover and lid are substantially in coplanar relation with the cooking plate when disposed in the opening, the cover will completely fill the opening and thereby effectively conceal the grate. Again, when the cover is removed from the opening the grate will render available the direct application of the flame over an area substantially equal to that of the opening; in this way a, maximum direct application of the lia-me to a vessel may be obtained regardless of the havinga top burn l size of the bottom of the vessel. Furthermore should occasion arise for the removal of the grate the same may be readily lifted out of the opening and the latter left entirely unobstructed to thus permit free access to the burner chamber.
The grate and cover are provided with openings i8 and 19 respectively, to permit their handling by the usual lifter.
l. The coinbination with a cooking plate having a lid opening therein disposed above a burner, of a flange formed integral With said plate and extending inwardly from the sides of said opening to define a plane annular seat for a lid. an iinperforate lid adapted to be removably supported on said seat with the top thereof in flush relation with the adjacent surface of said plate to completely close said opening, a plurality of supporting surfaces provided in said flange below the plane of said seate and a grate provided with projections whereby it may be seated on said surfaces when said lid is positioned in its seat 4 to be disposed entirely out of the plane of said lid, sait grate and burner being `independently mounted.
2. The combination With a stove having a fixed cooking top plate provided with a lid opening disposed above a burner, of an imperforate lid arranged to provide a complete closure for said opening, a grate adapted to be disposed in said opening, and supporting means formed integral with and depending from said plate and providing independent seats for thesupport of said lid and grate in said opening independently of each other and of the support for said burner.
In testimony whereof, We have hereunto set our hands atOakland, California7 this 19th day of September, 1924:.
