I MEANS TO KEEP MECHANICAL DRIVING MECHANISMS AT A CONSTANT RATE OF ROTATION Filed April 9, 1927 Patented Aug. 5, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT `ori-ICE GEORG VON ARCO, OF BERLIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO GESELLSCHAFT FR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE M. B. H., F BERLIN, GERMANY, A CORPORATION OF GERMANY MEANS TO KEEP MECHANICAL DRIVING MECHANISMS AT A CONSTANT RATE 0F ROTATION Application. led April 9, 1927, Serial No.
It has previously been suggested to keep the running of clocks and similar mechani- :cal driving means constant by using a device.
. insuring constancy of rotation of the clockwork. But these devices have failed of attaining practical importance because they comprised electric circuit breakers, at one or more points, of very small motion ampli- Itudes so that extremely exact adjustment was necessary, which, however, could not be maintained for any length of time on account of wear of the contacts. K
The object of this invention is to devise means for obtaining constant speed from ordinary driving devices.
Another object of this invention is to keep different driving mechanisms in step.
A further object of the invention is to keep a driving motor in step with an oscillatory circuit.
A still further object of the invention is 1 to obviate electrical contact devices in constant speed apparatus.
Further objects of the invention will be `apparent from the following specification and drawings in which:

. manner.

to the oscillatory field so that in reality the wheel 4 would be affected by a pulsating constant field.
As is evident from the drawing the mechanical driving mechanism is so geared, that with the La Cour wheel coupled therewith mechanically, and without outside assistance the two will run in rather close synchronism with the generated alternating current of the thermionic oscillator. The mechanical power therefore can be said to consist of two parts, in the main of the mechanical energy source l and in a minor degree of the electrical source 1 -5. Thus if the mechanical source should show a tendence to speed up for any reason this is prevented from occuring by the electric brake. When however the mechanical driving mechanism tends to slow up the electrical` end will supply a supplementary torque sufficient to boost the speed of the motor to the required level.
Of course any suitable utilizing device could be connected up with the motor shaft in any well known manner.
It is thus evident that by means of this invention a very simple and highly ehicient speed control means may be had for comparatively small driving means.
Having thus described my inventi0n,what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. In a constant speed device, a driving mechanism, a synchronous motor device having a fine toothed wheel, step-up mechanism for connecting said driving mechanism to said fine toothed wheel, a local thermionic oscillation generator adapted to generate oscillationkof a constant frequency and means controlled thereby and acting on said fine toothed wheel for maintaining the speed of said driving mechanism constant.
2. In a constant speed device a driving unit, an auxiliary unit mechanically coupled thereto, both of -s aid 'units being coupled to a driven element, said auxiliary unit being adapted to rotate a greater niliiiber of times per unit of time than saijd driving unit, a constant frequency thermionic oscillation generator and means controlled by'the energy generated therein and acting on said GEORG VON ARCO.
