Description

E. K. BOTTLE' KANIFOLDING BOOK Filed April 192s I I I on... v I I m, I I
INVENTOR BY W W ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDARID KIRBY BOTTLE, F ELMIRAfNEW YORK, ASSIGNOB TO AMERICAN I SALES BOOK COMPANY, LIMITED, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO,
ONTARIO CANADA, A CORPORATION OF MANIFOLDING- BOOK Application filed April 7, 1923. Serial No. 830,580.
This invention relates to an improvement in manifolding books and with respect to its more specific features to four-copy books.
An object of the invention is to provide a a manifolding book wherein four coples may be simultaneously made, three ofwhich are opaque, one adapted to be retained in the book, and the others removed.
Another object is to provide a book of the re character specified, wherein the four copies may be simultaneously made by means of one single faced transfer leaf and one double faced transfer leaf.
Another object is to provide in a book ofthe character specified, a pad composed of sets of three leaves, one bound and the others supported by the bound leaf, one of the others being translucent and interposed between the remaining leaves of the set.
Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of manufacture possessing the features, properties, and therelation of elements whlch will be exemplified in the article hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claim. 2 80 For a fuller understanding of the nature andobjects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 isa perspective view of an embodiment of the invention,,with parts broken away,
Fig. 2 is rangement.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 1, the improved book is composed of pads, one of which comprises a series of leaves 1, which is bound to a backing 2, as for instance manila board, in any suitable manner, in the present instance by staples 3. The
' leaves 1 are opaque, and on the upper side of each leaf there is provided any suitable form indicated at 4, and in use, the leaves 1 are the ori 'nals of the record.
A secon backing 5 is hinged to the end a similar view of an alternate ar- 8 of the sets.
of the backing 2 remote from the binding 3 a flexible strip 6 in such manner that as shown. The second pad is connected to the backing 5, and this pad is composed of a plurality of sets of record leaves, each set including a leaf 7 bound at one end,'a leaf 8 carried by the leaf 7 at the other end, and a leaf 8 carried by the leaf 8. All of the leaves 7 of the sets are bound together at that end of the backing 5 remote from the hinge 6, the binding in t e present instance being by means of staples 9, althou h it is obvious that any other form of bindlng might be used. The leaves 7 and 8 are integral, and are opaque, but the leaf 8" is of tissue, and is pasted to the underside of the leaf 8. In the present instance it is connected to the leaf 8 at the end remote from the connection of the leaf ,8 with the leaf 7 b a line of paste.
A plurality of transfer eaves 10 and 11 is supported by the second pad, the transfer leaves in the present instance being bound with the leaves 7 of the sets, and the transfer leaves are so arranged that the leaf 11 may be interposed betweem the leaves 7 and 8 of the sets, while the leaf 10 may be interposed between the leaves 1 and the leaves The leaves 1 are intended to \be retained in the book as a permanent recy the backing 5 may fold onto the backing 2' 'ord, and as each leaf is used, 1t is placed betained in the book as a permanent record,
but the sets are intended to be removed from the book. with a weakened line 12 near the binding, and a weakened line 13 is provided between the leaves 7 and 8 of the sets, the weakened lines being in the present instance lines of partial separation. The transfer leaf 11 is double faced, so that an impression will be made on the obverse side of the leaf 8, which Hence each leaf 7 is provided a will be visible through the leaf. The transfer leaf 11 also carries the impression to the leaf 7, and the transfer leaf 10 carries the impression to the leaf 8. When not in use, all of the leaves 1 are folded down upon the second pad. When in use, all of the leaves 1 except the lowermost are turned back into the position of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 2, the construction is precisely the same as that shown in Fig. 1, with the exception of the arrangement of the translucent leaf, that is the leaf corresponding to the leaf 8 of Fig. 1. Referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the leaf 14 corresponding to the leaf 8 of Fig. 1, is secured to the leaf 15 which corresponds to the leaf 8 of Fig. 1, near its connection with the leaf 16 corresponding to the leaf 7 of Fig. 1. The second pad con1- prises the leaves 14, 15 and 16, the leaf 14: being carried by the leaf 15, while the leaves 15 and 16 are integral. The book is used in precisely the same manner, the lowermost transfer leaf 17 of the leaves 17-19 being interposed between the leaves 14 and 16, while the transfer leaf 19 is interposed between the leaf 18 and the leaf 15 of the first pad, corresponding to the leaves 1 of Fig. 1, and the sets.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A manifolding book comprising in combination, two pads of leaves so arranged that the leaves of one pad may be superposed upon the leaves of the other pad, the leaves of one pad being arranged in sets of three leaves, one bound and the others supported, by the bound leaf at the end remote from the hinding, and transfer leaves supported by said pad and relatively positioned with reference to the pads so as to be interposed between the leaves of the sets and between the sets and the leaves of the other pad.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
EDWARD KERRY BOTTLE.
