like.
In accordance with the present lnventlon the seal of the distributor is secured by means of a frame mounted to move in a seat for the distributor, said frame being forced on the rotary distributor by the compression or explosion pressure, while along the frame edge the seal is secured by a flexible member of said seat which is forced by fluid pressure on the edge of said frame.
On the annexed drawing is illustrated by Way of example an embodiment of the present invention as applied to an internal combustion engine,and
Figure 1 is a section of the engine along the cylinder and crank shaft axes;
Figure 2 is a transverse section to an enlarged scale of the cylinder head and of the distributor on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a bottom View of the. separate sealing frame.
In the illustrated embodiment, the engine comprises a'casing 1 in which is mounted a crank shaft 2 actuated by a connecting rod 5 and a piston 3 mounted'to reciprocate in cylinder 4. i r V On the head of the engine cylinder 4 which has atop mouth 6, is located a casing 7 in which arotary distributor 9 is mounted to rotatc by, means of ballbearlngs 8; said distr1butor9 is driven by the engine shaft 2 by means of a gearing 10, 11,12, 13, 14 and connects timely the mouth 6 of the cylinder with a duct 15 leading from carburetter (not 1 shown) and with exhaust 16. r
In chamber 7 around the cylinder mouth 6, a sealingframe 18 is mounted to move in a recessed seat 17, it being able tomove' in the direction of the engine cylinder axisrthe 7 mouth 6 of the cylinder.
Springs 19 located in recesses provided on the cylinder head, hold the frame 18 permanently forced on thedistributor surface.
Frame 18 has ducts 20 passing through it for "permanently forced on the surface of distributor 9'to'prevent rattling andduring'thecomseat 17in whichit is mounted;
'of a suitable pump (not shown) and, tubes 21-22, for the purpose of cooling frame 18. g Said frame 18 has in its opening asuriface 18 parallel with thecylinderaxisand rib 18 "projecting towa'rdsin'sid'e of mouth 6' (Figs."2 andi3) The mouth 6 of the cylinder isencircled by aperipheral tongue 23, which may besecured. on 'sai'cl mouth or may be obtained from the material providing the cylinder head, and the projecting portion of said tongue bears on the surface 1850f the frame.
In operation, springs 19' holdthe frame 18 pression and explosionperiods the gases under pressure operative in the cylinder 4 also act on the edge 18" ofthe frame 18 and force said framewith heavier action on theldistrilo- 70 utor to secure seal along theperiphery of the mouth 6 of the frame on which thesurface of the distributor slides; atthe same time the "pressure operates outwardly on the tongue 23 i and forces it onthe portion 18of the frame 5 18 to secure-the seal between the seat 1710f the cylinder and the frame and prevent gases from leakingthrough the gap existing be tween the bottom face of the frame 18 and the A satisfactory seal is thus secured the distributor 9, beingfmountedin bearings 8, cannotbe forced on the surface of its seat 7 opposite the mouth 6"of the cylinder. 7 The tongue 23 may be separate from and fastened on the mouth 6 of the cylinde'ras il lustrated, or it maybe obtained from the material providing the cylinder.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by United StatesLetters Patent 1s V i '1. In a reciprocatory machinea cylinder, a casing on said cylinder, said cylinder having a mouth openingin said casing and a re- 5 cessed seat encircling said mouth, a rotary distributor in saidcasing, means for driving said distributor, a frame loose in said seat and encircling said mouth and having a,surface contacting with said distributor and a surface subject to the cylinder pressure, and
a tongue on said cylinder mouth subject to cylinder pressure and contacting with the sur face of said frame.
2. In a reciprocatory machine a cylinder, a casing on said cylinder having a mouth opening in said casing and a recessed seat encircling'said mouth, a rotary distributor in said c'asingkinearis for driving said distributor, a frame loose in said seat and having an orifice registering with said month said frame having a" surface contacting with said distributor and a second surface parallel With the direction of the freeinotionof said frame in said I Ln ing rib on said fr et. pr re ei around said orifice,
and a pressure receiving tongue onsa'id seat contacting W1th said secondv frame surface.
I aim reciprocatory machine a cylinder, a, ca sing on said cylinder having a' mouth opening in said casing and a recessed seat encirclingsaid mouth, a rotary distributor in said casing, means for driving saiddist-ributor, aframe loose in said seat-and having an orifice registering vvith saidinoiith, said ir fi haeing a surface contacting With said distributor and a" second surface parallel with the direction of thefree motion'pf said frame in saidseat, a pressure receiving rib on Said framearound said orifice, a pressure receiving tongue on said seat contaleting' Witlrsaid second frame surface, and springs forcing said frameon said distributor.
4, ln a reciprocatory machine a cylinder, a casing on said cylinder having'a mouth opening said casing anda recessedseatfencircling said mouth, a rotary distributor in said casing, means for driving said distributor, a frame loose in said seat and an; orifice. registering with said month, said framehaving a surface con tacting jvvith Saidjg lis'tributor and sec and surfape parallel with the direction of the ime ,m t on of I said fIal1 1i .l 11 said Seat, pressure receiving on I said frame around said orifice, apm'Ssm reCeiv ingetongue oii sai (1 seat contactin with said second fraine surface, springs forcing said frame on saiddistributor, said frame ha ing holes alloyving a circulation of cooling fluid through-said frame, l .e i
