C. R. HENNICKE DOOR LATCH Filed Nov. 25, 1927 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENT Ma Patented July 29, 1930 UNITED stratus NT} OF CARL n. HENNICKEQOF CLEVELAND, otrro, nssrsivon 'ro THE BERHARDL MANUFAC- TUBING coM'rA'n'Y, or CLEVELAND,
OHIO, A .CORPORATTON DF OHI O DOOR LATCH Application. filed November 25, 1927. Serial No. 235, L- i vided a latch of very simpleand compact construction which can be cheaply manufactured and which can be used on a very narrow doorstile. The latch can be used on both right and left-handed doors without any change, and can be used for latching the door open as well as closed. The latch is providcd withan inside handle, and provisionis made also for the use of an outside handle,
the construction being such that the 3 outside handle is brought close to the edge of the door.
The compact construction of the latchand the convenient'disposition thereof on the door permits the door to be opened a maximum amount.
The invention maybe readily understood by referenceto the in whichtion of a sliding latch embodying my invention applied thereing plate. inside the casing;
Figure is a side elevation of the latch applied to the door, part of the door being broken away to show. the construction of the.
outside. handle; Figure 3 is a plan view of housing of the latch;
Figure 4: is a section on the line IV-IV of Figure 3;

Figure 7 is an elevation of Figure 8 is a side elevation of the member shown in Figure 7; Figure 9 isa side'elevationv bined rollback and handle construction;
' Figure 10 is a front elevation of the member shown in Figure'9 and Figure 11 is a perspective view of one of accompanying drawings,
the casing or lower end thereof, thelugs 17 the bolt .01 slid substantially equal .to the 1 so thatwhen the sliding plate is in the casin of the com-.
. plate part thereoflthe outer surface of the back of the post C in opening the door. As
shown in Figure 1, the door is partially open. The latch, which is adapted to be secured to the stile A, comprises a casing 2 :having side flanges 3 and end flanges 4. 'On each of the end flanges a is apad 5. In each of the side flanges 3 is an openingfi and extending inwardly fromthe side flanges'3 below the opening 6 are lugs 7 The p casingis preferably made of pressed sheet. metal and the lugs 7 are struck inwardly from the flanges 3 to form ,the opening 6. In the face-ofthe casing is in the top end of the flange 4 is a slot 9.; Received in the casing is I a sliding plate or bolt 10 whichis also prefera circular opening 8 and ably formed of-sheet metal. The central port on of the'member 10 isof substantially the same width as the inside of the casing 2, and has a pair ofout-wardly turned lugs 11 thereon, one of these lugs beingat each side of the plate, as best shown in Figures 7 and 8. The
upper endof the sliding plate 10 is bifurcated to provide a central opening 12 with lugs 13 at each side thereof. an overturned lug ll thereon. The portion of the plate below the lugs 11 is of reduced width, this portion of reduced width being designated 15. At each side of the portion 15 is an outwardly turned flangelG. Each of the flanges 16 has a laterally turned lug 17 at the in opposite directions away from each other. The narrowgportion15ofthe sliding plate extends between the higsfinthe casing.- The height of the lugs or fiangeslfl is preferably depth of the casing with the flanges llfandlfi turned toward the plate 10 will besubstantially flush with the edges. of-the flanges 3 and 4. A cover plate 18. is placed .over the casing2 but includes Each of the lugs 13 has being turned the sliding plate 10. The cover plate 18 may be riveted or otherwise fitted to the casing by means of rivets 19 passing through registering holes 20 and 21 in the cover plateand casing respectively. The casing and cover late 18 also have registering holes 22 throug which bolts orscrews 23pass to secure the lock to the door. The cover plate 18 has a circular hole 24 which registers with the opening 8 in the casing. The cover plate also has inwardly struck projections 25 thereon.
In the casing, between the casing and the cover plate, is a rollback having a central portion 26 with lateral projections 27 at each side thereof. The projections 27 engageunder'the lugs 14 of the sliding plate or bolt.
The ends of the part 26 are round and are reduced as indicated at 28. These portions 28' are received in the openings 8' and 24 of thecasing and cover plate respectively to provide a rotatable mounting for the rollback. Projecting upwardly from the portion 26 through the slot '9 is a handle 29. The part 26 of the rollback has a square hole 30 therethrough.
Inside the casing, between the inwardly turned lugs or ears 7 of the side flanges 3 and the end lugs 17 of the slidingplate or bolt 10, are compression springs 31 which function to urge the plate 10 downwardly. The flanges 16 serve to confine thesprings, and the projections 25 also function tohold the springs in proper position in the casing.
In the normal position of the various parts, the end lugs 17 are spaced above the bottom flange 4 of the casing and the springs 31' urge the lugs 14 of the bolt into contact with lugs 27 of the handle. The lugs or ears 11 project down part way but not entirely across the openings 6 in the side fianges3, and the handle 29 is vertical with the tops of the lugs 27 horizontal. The lugs 14 are in contact with the tops of the lugs 27 of the tumbler.
For cooperation with the lugs 11 there is provided one-or more keeper elements having a base portion '32 with an outwardly extending shank portion 33 on which isa' head 34. One of these keeper members is mounted on the post B and another is mounted on the frame C.
When the door is closed, the keeper head 34 enters theopeningG at one side of the casi-ng lifting the bolt 10 against the action .of the springs 31. The springs then snap the bolt back so that-the lugs 11 engage in back of .the head 34. To open .the door the handle 29 is rocked in either direction. 0116101614116 lugs 27 engaging under a lug 14 of the plate "10 slides the plate 10 upwardly until the lug 11 is raised out of cooperating position with the keeper head 34. By reason of the fact that there are two lugs 11 and an opening6 at the'edge of the casing,the latch can be used on either a rightor lefthanded door. Ito-an .azlsoybe ,used to cooperate with the keeper element on the post C for holding the door open. This is desirable on cabs of trucks for summer driving.
For opening the door from the outside there is provided a square stem 35 that passes through the door and through the square hole 30 in the portion 26 of the rollback. On the outer end of the stem is a handle or wings 36 for turning the stem 35 to operate the rollback. The handle 36 is preferably set in a cup 37 in a recess in the door, as best shown in Fig ure 2.
The latch as described is of extremely simpleconstruction and can be cheaply manufactured. It has few operating parts and its operation is positive. The parts can be assembled into a compact casing so that the latch does not take up much room on the door. Consequently, it permits the door to be opened a maximum distance. The parts can be cheaply manufactured.
The lugs 11 may be provided with stiffening ribs 11, these ribs being pressed into the metal and being continued into the body of the plate 10, as shown in Figures 7 and 8.
lVbile it is preferred that most of the parts be made from pressed sheet metal, it will be understood that they can be otherwise constructed and that various changes and modifications can be made in the construction and arrangement of parts within the contemplation of my invention and under the scope of the following claims.
I claim: I v
