" l BRICK VENEERING MACHINE Filed lov. 2, 1927 E A. Sigma/" @auf @mi www Patented July 29, 193() i UETE STATE 5 `unos Af'srnwnnm, oFcANToN, onto BRICK-vnunnarue MACHINE if 'applicativa ned November 2, 1927. semaine. 236,502.
The invention relates'to'veneering of brick andthe like and more particularly to a ma` chine for forming brick in which the clay column issuing fromthemachine is provided 5 upon some or all of its faces with a veneering of clay or the like. `The object of Jthe improvement is tol provide a machine which may comprise a brick machine of any usual and well known construction having combinedtherewith an apparatus forfplacing a vcneering Vof' clay or the like upon some or all ofthe faces of the clay column formed by the brick machine, means being provided for maintaining a uni-4 form pressure uponthe veneering substance.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in theaccompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectionalview through a machine embodying the' invention;
Fig. 2,` a section on the line 2#2, Fig. 1,` and j Fig. 3, a section similar to Fig. showing a form of therapparatus designed to apply a veneer upon all four sides'of a clay column.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawing.
The apparatus may include a brick machine of any usual construction comprising the cylinder' 1 having the feed hopper 2 at its rear end for receiving clay, shale or the like,
and having the auger 3 for feeding the clay forward and through the column die l in column as indicated at 5.
This much of the machine may be of any well known construction adapted for forming a clay column. The invention pertains to the placing of a veneer of clay or other suitable material upon some or all of the faces of the clay column thus formed. y
The apparatus for forming the veneer comprises generally means for feeding clay or other suitable material to and around some o r all sides of the clay column and means for placing a uniform pressure upon the veneer- 5 ing material as the same is fed to the clay column. l
This apparatus may comprise a small auger machine located adjacent to the brick machine above described, and comprising the cylinder 5@ 6 having the feed hopper 7 and auger 8 for `vupon the veneering material `and `with any conveying the `veneering material into the vertical chamber 9, thelowerend 10 of which is located adjacent to the column die 4 whereby the clay column aslit issues from the die will pass therethrough. f The sides ofthis lower portion 10 of the chamber are preferably inclined downward toward the column as indicated at 11.` As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the device is arranged to provide a veneering upon the topand two side faces ofthe` column bylproviding `the raised bottom 12 in the lower portion of the chamberll, upon which "the clay column .is arranged to slide'. i r f i Ifit is desired to coat the bottom surface l5 j also of the clay column withla'fveneer, the lower port-ion of thelchambermay be `con'- structed as shown` in Fig. 3,a roller lbeing mounted upon the bottom wall of the chamber for supportingthe clay column andlpermitting the veneer to pass entirely under the same. A sizing die 14 is provided at the outer side of the lower portion 11 of the veneer cham-f ber, through which thewcla'y column passes, this die controlling the thickness of veneer upon the clay column. By increasing ordecreasing `the sizeof sizing die'used atthis point, the veneer coating may be made thicker or thinner asdesired; j i 50 Forthe purpose of maintaining a uniform pressure uponthe veneer material, a plunger 15 may be'slidablymounted in the chamber 9 and adapted to bear upon the clay or other substance used for veneering. i i S5 This plunger may be connected as by a con# necting rod k16, to an` intermediate portion of the lever 17,0ne end of which is pivotedas at 18 to astationary object such as the'bracket arm 19 and4 aslidable weight 2() is .adapted to pe mounted upon the other'end portion of the ever. f 1
By adjusting the position of this weight, any desired amount of pressurem-ay be placed fixed adjustment of the weight Yit will beseen thatthe pressure will remain uniform.
j It is understood that attempts havebeen made in the past to apply,ajveneerfcoacting n uponf bricks but it lis not known `that any of 1"@ such attempts have been entirely successful and this is believed to be caused by varying pressure being applied to the veneering material. It has been found by experience that by lmaintaining a uniform pressure upon the veneering material very satisfactory results have been produced. Y
It should be understood that the invention consists broadly in providing means for maintaining a uniform pressure upon the veneerin g material in order thata uniform and even coating of veneer may be applied to the clay column and the apparatus shown in the accompanying drawing and above described is for the purpose of illustration only and does not disclose the only method by which this uniform pressureV may be produced.
The veneering material may be formed of the same kind of clay of which the clay column is formed, being, however, ground finerand mixed to a slightly thinner consistency than the clay column, or any other suitable substance may be used for this purpose. Y
