Machines of this type are commonly used for skivingparts-of boots and shoes. Some parts of a shoe, such for instance as'a box toe blank or a counter, have a convex edge which must be skived and .difli'culty is sometimes experienced in obtaining. aproper skiving of such convex edge. becausethe feeding mechanism of the machine tends tofeed the work in a straight line rather than in a curved path required to present properly at all times the convex edge of the partto the skiving knife.
It is one of the objects of my, present invention to provide improvements in ski-ving machines of this type by which the skiving of a convex edge is facilitated and this is.
accomplished herein by providing means;
which will assist in guiding the work through the machine so that the convex edge to be skived will at all times be properly presented to the skivingknife; 1
In the present machine this end is accomplished by providing anaux-iliary feed roll in addition to the regular feed roll and presser foot, which auxiliary feed roll is positively driven and acts on the Work directly in advance of the presser foot, and by also providing means to impart a retarding influence to the feeding movement of the Work at a point spaced from the-edge being skive'd. The parts thus far described are or maybe all as usual in skiving machines of this type and form no part of my present invention.
In skiving a convex edge, such for instance as the convex edge 14 of a toe cap blank 15, difficulty is sometimes experienced in maintaining the convex edge in proper position against the gauge and in proper position to be accurately skived as the work is fed, and as stated above one of the objects of my present invention is to provide improvements in skiving machines which will remedy this dithculty, and this object is attained by employing an auxiliary feed roll which acts on the upper side of the work between the presser foot and the edge gauge 13 and an auxiliary presser foot which engages the work at a distance from the auxiliary feed roll, the combined action of said auxiliary presscr foot and auxiliary feed roll. operating to give the work a turning movement as it is fed which will maintain the convex edge in proper position to be skived.
The auxiliary feedroll 16 is situated between the edge gauge 13 and the presser foot 10. This auxiliary roll is carried on a shaft 1'? which is capable of being adjusted into different angular positions in a vertical plane to conform to the adjusted position of the feed roll 6 and is also made adjustable angularly in a horizontal plane. The shaft 17 is positively rotated and in the present embodin'ient of the invention it derives its rotation from a pulley 67 on the shaft 3. The shaft 17 has a pulley 18 fast thereon which is connectedto the pulley 67 by a belt 68, the latter passing around direction pulleys 69. The shaft 17 is journalled in a suitable bearing member 19 which is arranged within a housing 20 and is capable of angular adjustment therein in both a. vertical and a horizontal plane. The adjustment in the horizontal plane is secured through the medium of four adjusting screws 21 which screw through the walls of the housing 20 and engage the sides of the housing 19. By means of these screws the angular position of the shaft 17 relative to the axis of the feed roll' 6 may be varied.
For eifecting the adjustment in a vertical plane to conform to the adjustment of the feed roll 6 said bearing is provided with two screw-threaded studs 22 which extend .up through the housing, the projecting ends of the screws having nuts 23 screw-threaded thereto.
A fulcrum screw 24 is screwed into the housing and bears against the bearing member between the screw-threaded studs 22. By tightening one nut and loosening the other the bearing member will be rocked about the fulcrum screw 24: into different angular positions in a vertical plane.
Springs 25 encircle the studs 22 and are confined between the bearing member 19 and the housing, these springs permitting the auxiliary feed roll 16 to yield slightly in a vertical direction as the thickness of the leather varies.
The auxiliary feed roll 16 will be set or adjusted so that in its operation it will tend to draw the edge 14 of the work against the gauge. Cooperating with this auxiliary feed roll is an auxiliary presser foot 26 which is situated to rest on the work at a point spaced from the edge, being skived, and preferably in axial alignment with theaui-ziliary feed roll 16. This auxiliary presser foot is yieldingly mounted in a holder 27 which is carried by an'arm 28 that is secured to the head 11. The holder 27 is tubular and the presscr foot 26 is provided with a shank 29 which extends therethrough, a spring 30 encircling the shank between the presser foot and the lower end of the holder and tending to yieldingly hold the auxiliary presser foot against the work.
The auxiliary presser foot is provided with an up-turned toe 31 which forms with the table a converging throat through which the work is fed and in order to hold the presser foot in proper position the shank 29 thereof is provided with a pin 32 which is receive-:1 in a slot 33 formed in the head 27.
In the operation of the device, whenever a piece of work such as the box toe blank 15 is introduced into the machine with the curved edge against the edge gauge 13, the combined action of the main feed roll 6 and the auxiliary feed roll 16, both of which are po-sitivel driven, will feed the work to the knife and as the work passes under the auxiliary presser foot 26 the latter will have a dragging or retarding influence on the work at a point spaced laterally from the edge on which the feed rolls are'operating. As a result the work will be turned. as it is fed and the convex edge 14 will be maintained in contact with the edge gauge 13 so that the skiving at the convex edge will be proper y accon'iplished and without any necessity of the operator manipulating the piece as it is fed through the machine.
While it is not so difficult to he p a straight edge in contact with the edge gauge of a machine of this type, nevertheless the present invention assists in feeding work having a straight edge as well as work having a convex edge, since whatever the shape of the edge the tendency of the mechanism herein described is to cause the work to press firmly against the edge gauge.
I claim:
1. A skiving machine having a rotary skiving knife, a main feed roll adjacent to the cutting edge of the knife and arranged to contact with one side of the work, means for supporting and adjusting the main feed roll to permit bodily movement of the roll.
toward and from the knife edge and to permit angular adjustment of the feed roll axis in a vertical plane, an auxiliary feed roll memos arranged to contact with the other side of the work, means for adjustably supporting the auxiliary feed roll tov permit angular adjustment thereof in either the horizontal or vertical plane, and means for rotating the cutter and feed rolls.
2. In a skiving machine, the combination of a cylindrical skiving knife, a mam feed roll operating on the under side of the work and adjustable toward and from, and angularly with respect to said knife, an auxiliary feed roll operating on the upper side of the work, means for adjusting the auxiliary feed .roll bodily and angularly in a vertical plane to correspond with adjustments of the main feed roll, the auxiliary feed roll also being adjustable horizontally, means for rotating th auxiliary feed roll, a bed plate for supporting the work in relation to the two feed rolls and knife, and a presser foot yieldingly engaging the work at a point spaced from the edge to be skived, said presser foot op erating to retard the feeding movement of the work, thereby to cause the work to turn as it is fed to the knife.
3. In a skiving machine, the combination with a cylindrical skiving knife and a feed roll operating beneath the work,of an auxiliary feed roll operating on the, upper face of the work at the edge to be skived, means to rotate said auxiliary feed roll, means engaging the work at a point spaced from the edge to be skived and acting to'retardthe feeding movement thereof, whereby the work a is turned as it is fed, and means for adjusting the auxiliary feed roll in a direction parallel to a substantially horizontal plane including the axis of said auxiliary feed roll.
4. In a skiving machine, the combination of a cylindrical skiving knife, a pair of cooperating feed rolls located in front of the knife edge and bodily adjustable toward and from and angularly with respect to the knife edge and acting to feed the work to the knife,
means for permitting the upper feed roll to yield toward and from the lower feed roll, means for guiding the edge to be skived in its passage through the feed rolls, and means located substantially in lin'e with the axes of the feed rolls for yieldingly engaging the work being fed to retard the feeding movement and thereb to cause the work to be turned as it is fe 5. In a skiving machine having a cylindrical skiving knife and an upper pressure foot and a lower feed roll co-operating to feed the work to the knife, an auxiliary feed roll in advance of the pressure foot and co-operating with the usual feed roll, means for positively driving the same, and means for mounting the auxiliary feed roll on the machine frame including means for adjusting the axis of the auxiliary feed roll both'in a horizontal plane and in a vertical plane.
6. A skiving machine of the class described, having a cylindrical skiving knife, a -main .fQGd'i-IOll and i an auxiliary feed roll cooperating to feed the worktothe knife, and means fon supporting the; auxiliary feed roll arranged to permit the axis-of the auxiliary for the shaft, means engaging said bearlng at opposite sides thereof for adjusting it horizontally, and means spaced longitudinally of the bearing for adjusting it angularly in a vertical plane.
8, A machine of the class described com prising a cylindrical cutter, a main feed roll, an auxiliary feed roll cooperating with the main feed roll to feed the work to the cutter, a shaft for the auxiliary feed roll, a bearing for the shaft, means guiding thebearing for movement in a vertical plane, an abutment engaging the bearing intermediate its ends to form a fulcrum therefor, and means disposed at opposite sides of said abutment for swinging the bearing in a vertical plane about said fulcrum.
9. A machine of the class described comprising a cylindrical cutter, a main feed roll, an auxiliary feed roll cooperating with the main feed roll to feed the work to the cutter, a shaft for the auxiliary feed roll, means for adjusting the main feed roll in a vertical direction, and means for adjusting the axis of the auxiliary feed roll transversely of the main feed roll.
10. A machine of the class described comprising a cylindrical cutter, a main feed roll, an auxiliary feed roll cooperating with the main feed roll to feed the work to the cutter, means for adjusting the main feed roll, and means for adjusting the auxiliary feed roll horizontally and in more than one vertical plane.
11. A machine of the class described comprising a cylindrical cutter, a main feed roll, an auxiliary feed roll cooperating with the main feed roll to feed the work to the cutter, means for adjusting the main feed roll, and means for adjusting the auxiliary feed roll in a plurality of parallel horizontal planes.
12. A machine of the class described comprising a cylindrical cutter, a main feed roll, an auxiliary feed roll cooperating with the main feed roll to feed the work to the cutter, means for adjusting the main feed roll, and means for adjusting the auxiliary feed roll in a plurality of parallel vertical planes.
13. A machine of the class described comprising a cylindrical cutter, a main feed roll, an auxiliary feed roll cooperating with the main feed roll to feed the work to the cutter, means for adjusting the main feed roll, and means providing for rectilinear adjustment of the auxiliary feeding roll in a direction other than Vertical.
