HENRY C. FOX AND JOSEPH HAYWARD, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-SWITCHCHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,112, dated May 9, 1876; application tiled March 13, 1876.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY G. Fox and JosEPH HAYWARD, of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Switch Chair, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists ot' the base and web supports of the rails, extended up to and so fitted under the overhanging sides of the rail-head that they are supported against splitting oi' and hammering down to a 'greater extent than in the common arrangement.

A represents the base of the chair; B, the clips for securing the base and web vot' the rail, which, in 'the common construction of switch-chains, extend up to the dotted line C, or thereabout, being' mainly to hold therail by the base D, and only supporting the web E for a very short distance above the base. My invention consists of extending these clips or base-supports up along the web to and partly around the sides of the head, as at F, to sustainthem substantially against being split or hammered down by the Wheels, and for the shifting-rail G, which cannot be supported by the stationary clips'. I propose to appl y the supports H between the base D and the sides ot' the head in the same manner, thus effectually protecting these parts, which, perhaps, more than' any other suffer from pounding by the Wheels. These supportsv will be held on by bolts I going through them and the rail, and having sockets in the beveled sides of the supports for the heads and nuts.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A switch-chair for railroads, having base A, provided With clips B, extended into contactl with the upper face of the foot, the whole side face ofthe web, and the under surface ot' the head ofthe rail, to form a solid head-supportas shownand described.
2. The detachable supports H, combined with the base, web, and head of the movable switch-rail, substantially as specified.
