Description

A. A. ADAMS. MANUFACTURE 013'v GIIAS-SW'ARE. No 177 087. Patented May 9,1876.

v lamp-foot.
NI'IED STATES PATENT. FFIGE.
AUGUSTUS A. ADAMS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO ADAMS & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN MANUFACTURE OF GLASSWARE.
Specification forming part-of Letters-Patent No. 177,087, dated May 9, 1876; application filed April 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS A. ADAMS, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Manufacture of Glassware; and I do hereby declare the following to a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specifl cation, in whic Figure l is a vertical section of a mold and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a blow-mold, showing the manner of forming the lamp-bowl, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of a lamp.
Like letters refer to like parts wherever they occur.
My invention relates to the manufacture of glass lamps, and similar articles of hollow glassware, in which an annular drip-cup surrounds a bowl or like receptacle having a filling-orifice. v
I will now proceed to describe my invention so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.
. In the drawing, which illustrates devices that may be employed in carrying out my invention, A A are sections of a two-part mold for pressing up a lamp-foot, a, with a cup or bowl section, b. and annular flange c. B is the bottom plate oft-he mold, and 0 is the ring provided with an annular projection c for producing a groove in. the flange c. D is an ordinary plunger corresponding to the cavity of the mold.
In amold of the general character just specified, I press up a foot,or foot and stem, a,having a cup or bowl section, I), with an'annular in the usual manner, the bowl thus formed uniting with the foot and cup section so as to constitute a complete lamp, (shown in Fig. 3,)
or a similar article, according to the design,
surrounded by an annular grooved dripflange.
The advantages arising from this manner of making a lamp with a drip-flange are the rapidity and ease with which the article can be formed, the reduction in labor, the simplicity of the molds required, and the greater strength and more finished appearance of the lamp.
I am aware that a lamp-bowl having an annular drip or overflow flange has been heretefore made, and do not herein claim such an article; but
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A lamp, or similar article of glassware,
having the pressed-glass drip-cup, in comb} 'nation with the blown bowl, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The pressed-glass foot, having the cup or bowl section, and the annular grooved flange, substantially as and for the purposespecified.
In testimony whereof I, the said AUGUSTUS A. ADAMS have hereunto set my hand.
. AUGUSTUS A. ADAMS. Witnesses:
