Description

H. J. HATER PISTON Filed May 4. 1927 flariyJ Patented July 1, 1930 T OFFICE HARRY JOHN HATER, 0F CINCINN -TI, OHIO PISTON Application filed May}, 1927. Serial No. 188,786.
My invention relates to improvements in pistons for engines and more particularly to the type of pistons used in internal combustion engines or motors and having a head, and a skirt or tubular portion depending therefrom.
The object of my invention is the provision of a piston which will fit snugly into its cylinder, without danger of scoring, which will not slap or rattle, which will bear uniformly. on the cylinder and which will be inexpensive to manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and wherein like characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved piston,
Figure 2 is a similar elevation taken at an angle 'of 90 from Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2, and,
Figure 5 is a transverse section taken on" the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
' In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration isshown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates the solid head of the piston having the usual packing ring grooves 11 and a depending hollow skirt 12. The skirt 12 is provided with the usual wrist pin openings 13 which are preferably arranged in the center of the piston as shown. The metal of the skirt is cut away or relieved around the spaced around the wrist pin opening within wrist pin opening 13 and oil holes 14 are the relieved portion of the skirt. . Transverse slits 15 and 16 are arranged between the head and skirt of the piston, and extend from just inside one relief to ust inside the other relief on opposite sides of the piston. An-
inclined slit 17 extends from the transverse slit 16 to the end of the skirt, startingat of wrist pin, or other securing means are not used, the
approximately the center of the transverse slit and terminating'at a point on the lower' end of the skirt in a vertical line which passes through the slit 16 at a point nearer to the center ofthe slit than to its end. There is only one slit 17 and the iston is provided with the usual Wrist pin osses 18.
A rib 19 is arranged adjacent the lower portion of the skirt and extends around the inside circumference of the skirt disappearing at a point below the wrist pin bosses 18, to facilitate insertion and removal of a set screw or the like which secures the Wrist pin in position. In pistons where a floating type or any type in which set screws rib is continuous. Openings 20 may be arranged in the head of the piston, extending from the inside thereof to the lower packing ring groove.
The inner portion of the skirt is provided with reinforcements 21 the sides of which are tangent to and extend from,'the lower sides of the wrist pin bosses to the ends of the transverse slits l5 and 16.
The transverse slits 15 and 16 separate the greater portion of the skirt from the head and the vertically inclined. slit 17 takes care of the expansion of the piston and'prevents scoring of the cylinder. It has been found that one slit 17 is sufiicient to take care of the expansion of the piston, and the elimination of the second slit does'away with the danger of the piston skirt springing out of alignment; It has also been found that a single slit slightly inclined from a vertical, plane has better results than one or two sharplyinclined slits. 4
The piston may be made from aluminum or its alloys,- this type of piston being well adapted to such material.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it 1s to be understood that various changes in the .2 1,7ee,eas
be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the sub joined claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A iilston comprisin a head and a depending s 'rt, said skirt aving transverse slits therein, there being a wrist pin boss in the skirt, and a reinforcement on the inner portion of the skirt, said reinforcement being tangent to and extending from the lower sides of the wrist pin boss to the ends of the transverse slits. 5 In testimony whereof I afiix m signature.
HARRY JOHN TER.
