CLAUSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS EXTENSION TABLE This invention relates to improvements in an sion table and has for one of its principal objects the provision of a table having self-contained leaves which can be drawn out at the ends for extending the top from beneath the surface of the table itself.

@ne of the important objects of this invention is to provide in an extension table a plurality of slidable leaves which interiit with the table top when drawn out from beneath the same, and which are so fitted into position that there is no possibility of their becoming dislodged while in operation.

Another and still further important obj ect of this invention is to provide in an extension table a plurality of self-contained extension leaves which can be drawn out to supplement the length of the table top to any desired extent ranging from a very small extension to the full width of the combined two extensions.

Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawings and following specification.

The invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the drawings, and hereinafter more fully described.

As shown in the drawings:

The reference numerals 10 indicate generally the legs of a table having two side frame elements 12 and two end frame elements 14.

A cross piece 1G is fastened to the top of the side members 12 as best shown in'Figures 1 and 2, and loosely mounted directly above this cross piece is the main table top 18.

The cross piece 16 is provided with a rectangular opening which extends longitudinally thereof and in the space between the side frame members 12. A similarly shaped element 2O attached to the bottom of thetable 'top 18 extends downwardlyy through this opening, as shown in Figures 1 and 3, and fastened to the bottom of this element is a leaf spring 22 composed of either resilient fg edges of the table for the slidable reception g.;

of extension supports 26 which fit loosely in these openings and are retained in position by means of the leaf spring 22. It will be further noted that these extension supports 2G are sloped downwardly at their inner ends f so as to provide a wedging action ybetween their lower surfaces and the upper faces of the leaf spring 22 whereby the outer ends of the extensions 28 will be at all times forced upwardly when being drawn outwardly.

It will be further noted that each of the extension supports 26 is provided with a stop element as best shown at 30 which contacts with the inner faces of the end frame members 14, thereby limiting the outward mo- 'y tion of the extensions 28. A groove 32 is formed in the inner face of each of the extension supports 26, and a tongue 34 fits into each of these grooves, the tongues forming extensions of cross pieces 86 fastened by means of screws or the like 38 to the inner face of the end frame members 14.

The action of these tongues 84 in the groove 32 insures a proper tracking of the extensions 28 when being withdrawn. Suitable identations 40 are provided for the reception of the fingers ofthe operator.

In operation, as the extensions 28 are withdrawn, the top 18 is forced upwardly against the action of the spring 22, and at the same time, the extensions themselves are forced upwardly, thereby maintaining at all times a tight and close lit between the under surface of the top 18 and the upper surfaces of the extensions.

As soon as the extension supports 26 reach the limit of their motion as determined by the stops 30, the table top 18 will fall into position directly behind the correspondingly shaped inner end of the extension 28, thereby providing a smooth surface all in one plane.

I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:

1. An extension table, including a frame, a. top loosel mounted in the said frame', extensions sli ably positioned beneath the top, and means for forcing said extensions upwardly into the same plane as the plane of the table top as the extensions are withdrawn, said means comprising supports for the extensions mounted in the frame and at `an angle thereto, and means for retaining said table top and extensions in operative relation, said means including a downwardly extending element attached to the lower middie face of thel table top, a cross piece mounted 0n the table frame having an opening for the reception of said downwardly extending member, grooves formed in the table frame ends and in the said member for the slidable reception of the extension supports, and means for retaining said supports and table top in position, said means including a leaf spring mounted on the lower face of the table top member with its ends positioned across the grooves.

2. An extension table, including a frame, a top loosely mounted in the said frame, extensions sli ably positioned beneath the top` and means for forcing said extensions upwardl into the same plane as the plane of the ta. le top as the extensions are withdrawn, said means comprising supports for the extensions mounted in the frame and at an an le thereto, and means for retaining said tale top and extensions in operative relatiOIl, Said means including a downwardly extending element attached to the lower middle face of the table top, a cross piece mounted on the table frame having an opening for the reception of said downwardly extending member, grooves formed in the table frame ends and in the said member for the slidable reception of the extension supports, and means for retaining said supports and table top in position, said means including a leaf spring mounted on the lower face of the table top member with its ends positioned across the grooves, and additional grooves formed in the extension supports extending longitudinally thereof, cross pieces mounted on the inner faces of the frame ends, said cross 'eoes having extensions slidably mount-ed 1n said last-named grooves.
