This invention relates to improvements in car construction.
One object of the invention is to provide a' combined locking and center pin for connecting the body and truck bolsters of railway i cars, having means providing shouldered engagement with both bolsters, wherein the means providing the shouldered engagement includes a pair of locking blocks or bars having relatively wide shouldered engagement with the pin and corresponding bolster, the shouldered engagement between the pin and bars being along relatively straight engaging ledges transverse of the bolsters, of substantially uniform width.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined center and locking pin of the character indicated wherein the pin is of oblong cross section and has enlargements at opposite ends forming heads of elongated cross section also, whereby relatively wide,
straight, elongated retaining shoulders are had at opposite sides of each head adapted to cooperate with retaining means on the correspending bolsters, the head at one end of the pin being of such a size that it will pass through the pin receiving openings of the bolsters while assembling the pin therewith,
and the retaining means cooperating with said last named head including a pair of elongated bars or keys embracing the shank of the pin and having engagement with the straight ledges of the pin throughout the extent thereof.
Other objects of the invention will more clearly appear from the description and claims hereinafter following. i
In the drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of 4.0 the body bolster of a railway car illustrating my improvements in connection therewith. Figure 2 is a vertical, sectional view lengthwise through the body and truck bolsters, corresponding substantially to the line 22 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a horizontal, sectional view corresponding substantially to the line 33 of Figure 2. And Figure l is a detailed, perspective view of a locking bar or key employed in connection with my improved oen ter pin.
In saiddrawing, 10 designates the body I bolster and 11 thetruck bolster of a railway car, the body bolster being provided with a depending bearing projection having a bearing surface of spherical form cooperating with a bearing seat on a bearing plate 12 seated in a pocket at the top of the truck bolster.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the body and truck bolsters with alined center pin receiving openings 13 and 14 of substantially rectangular cross section. The bearing plate 12 is provided with a similar opening 15 corresponding in size and shape to the openings 13 and 14. The body bolster is provided with a pocket 16 at the top thereof which communicates with the upper end of the center pin opening 13 and is also of rectangular section and of larger size than the opening 13, thereby providing retaining shoulders 17-17 at opposite sides of the inner end of said pocket. The truck bolster preferably has the. bottom end of the opening 14 thereof closed by a wall portion 18. ly of the lower end, the opposed walls of the opening of the truck bolster are provided with alined key receiving slots 1919. The pin A has a shank 21 which extends through the openings of the body, and truck bolsters and is of substantially rectangular cross sect1on,as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. As clearly illustrated in said figures,
the shank 21 is of smaller size than the corresponding openings, being'of uniform section between heads, and having two of the opposed side faces, which are indicated by 22-22, spaced from the corresponding side walls of the openings 13 and 14: and having the remainin two sides, which are indicated by 23-23, sl1ghtly cut away at the corners, as clearly shown in Figure 3, the central portion of the side walls closely fitting the 5 in receiving openings. As will be evident, y providing the shank 21 of smaller cross section with the beveled sides 23-23, a certain amount of relative movement is permitted between the center pin member A and the body bolster. At the upper end, the pin A is provided with a head member formed by lateral-enlargements 24-24 on opposite sides 1 thereof. The enlargements 24-24 overhang the opposed shoulders 17-17 of the pocket of the body bolster, thereby preventing downward movement of the pin relative to this bolster. The head member formed by the enlargements 24-24 is also of substantially rectangular cross section but of slightl smaller size than the pocket 16. As most 0 early shown in Figure 1, two opposed and walls of the head, which are indicated by 25-25 are s aced from the corresponding side walls 0 the ocket and the remaininglopposed sides 0 the head, which are in 'cated by 26-26, are cut away at opposite corners or beveled as shown, thereby permittili a certain amount of turning movement of t e head with respect to the body bolster. At the lower end, the pin A is provided with a head member formed by laterally projecting enlargements 27-27 at opposite sides thereof corresponding to the sides at which the enlargements 24-24 at the upper end of the pin are located. The head formed by the enlargements 27-27 is also of substantiall rectangular cross section and is of such a s1ze that it will pass through the pin receiving openin s 13 and 14 of the bolsters. e opposite en faces of the head at the lower end of the pin, which are indicated by 28-28, loosely fit the pin receiving opening 14 of the truck bolster. As most clearly shown in Figure 2, the shoulders formed by the enlargements 28-28 at the bottom end of the in are located an appreciable distance be ow the slots 19-19 in the side walls of the in receiving openin r The lbckin bars or keys l3-B are of like design, each eing of L-shape form in cross sectlon, as clearl illustrated in Figures 2 and 4 and fit the -shaped openings 20. The blocks B are of such a width as to fill the space between the inner walls of the slots and the shank of the pin member A. The L-shaped blocks have portions 39 fitting the slots 19 and depending, flange-like or riblike sections 30 which fit between the shank of thepin member A and the corresponding Side walls of the in receiving opening 14 of the truck bolster elow the slots 19-19. As shown, the lower edges of the sections 30 of the blocks are s aced a slight distance from the shoulders ormed by the enlargements II 28-28 of the pin A so as to allow a certain and amount of vertical clearance between the same.
In applying my improved center pin to the body and truck bolsters of a railway car, the pin is inserted through the top of the bod bolster, the head at the lower end thereof eing passed through the pin receiving openings 13 and 14 of the bolsters. When the pin has been seated in the position shown in Figure 2, the locking blocks 13-13 are applied by inserting the same through the slots of the truck bolster. After having been applied, the locking blocks or bars are held in position by means of cotter pins 31-31 extending through openings in opposite ends of the respective bars B. The locking blocks or bars closely embrace the shank of the pin rovide relatively wide, elongated, straig 1t shoulders at the bottom edges thereof which cooperate with similar elongated, relatively wide, straight shoulders formed by the enlargements 28-28 at the lower end of the pin A, and owing to the L cross section, under vertical engagement, the keys tend to hug the body of the pin, and tightly fill the slots 19-19.
When it is desired to separate the body and truck bolsters, it is merely necessary to remove the locking bars or keys B, whereupon the body bolster may be lifted relatively to the truck bolster. In case it is desired to remove the in completely, the pin is withdrawn throng i the opening of the body bolster after the locking bars or keys B have been removed.
I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred manner of carrying out my invention, but the same is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within the scope (5 of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings; of a center pin extending through said openings and having head members at opposite ends thereof for connecting the same to the respective bolsters, the size of one of said heads being such that it will pass through said openings, m said last named head being defined by elongated straight flanges at opposite sides of the pm; and a pair of detachable retaining bars secured to one of said bolsters and embracing the shank of the pin inwardly of the last no named head and having shouldered engagement with said elongated straight flanges thereof.
2. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined :35 center pin receiving openings; of a center pin connecting said bolsters, said pin having a shank of rectangular cross section extending through said bolsters, and having enlargements at opposite ends thereof provid- Ill) ing relatively wide, substantially straight, elongated ledges at opposite sides of the pin at each endthereof; and retaining means on each of said bolsters having shouldered engagement with said ledges.
3. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings; of a center pin connecting said bolsters, said pin having a shank of rectangular cross section extending through said bolsters, and having enlargements at opposite ends thereof providing relatively wide, substantially straight, elongated ledges at opposite sides of the pin at each end thereof; and retaining means on each of said bolsters having shouldered engagement with said ledges, said retaining means of one of said bolsters being in the form of detachable bars extending through the bolster and embracing opposite sides or" said pin adjacent said ledges at the corresponding end thereof and having shouldered engagement with said ledges throughout the length of the same.
4:. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings; of a center pin connecting said bolsters, said pin having a shank of rectangular cross section, and said pin having enlargements at opposite ends of similar cross section, said enlargements forming head members cooperating with the bolsters, the size of one of said members being such as to permit insertion of the same through said openings; and means on said bolsters providing shouldered engagement with said head members, the last named means on one of said bolsters cooperating with said last named head including a pair of retaining bars anchored to the bolster and embracing the shank of the pin at opposite sides.
5. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings of oblong cross section, one of said bolsters having a head receiving pocket of oblong cross section and of larger size than said openings, thereby providing elongated, substantially straight, retaining shoulders at opposite sides of the outer ends of said openings; of a center pin connecting said bolsters, said pin having a shank of square cross section extending through said openings, said shank being of smaller size than said openings, said pin having a head at one end having shouldered engagement with said shoulders, and an enlargement at the other end providing substantially straight, elongated retaining ledges at opposite sides of the pin, said enlargement being of such a size as to pass through said pin receiving openings; and a pair of keys detachably secured to the other bolster, embracing the shank of the pin inwardly of said enlargement and having shouldered engagement with said ledges.
6. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings of substantially rectangular cross section, one of said bolsters having a pair of spaced retaining shoulders at the outer end of its opening; of a center pin connecting said bolsters, said pin having a shank of substantially square cross section extending through said openings, and head members at opposite ends thereof, said head members being of substantially rectangular cross section, one of said head members being of such a size as to pass through said openings and the other head being of larger size than said openings and having shouldered engagement with said retaining shoulders of said bolster; and locking bars extending through the other bolster embracing the shank of the pin inwardly of said head of smaller size and having shouldered engagement with the same.
7. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters having alined center pin receiving openings, each of said bolsters having relatively straight, elongated, transverse, retaining shoulders adjacent its opening; of a center pin connecting said bolsters, said pin having a shank extending through said bolsters, and having enlargements at opposite ends thereof, the shank of said pin adjacent each enlargement being flat at opposite sides, thereby providing pairs of transverse, elongated, straight shoulders at opposite ends of the pin cooperating with the opposed retaining shoulders of the corresponding bolsters.
8. In car construction, the combination with body and truck bolsters; of a center pin of substantially rectangular cross section connecting said bolsters and having heads at opposite ends thereof also of substantially rectangular cross section, having shouldered engagement with the corresponding bolsters respectively, each of said bolsters having an opening accommodating the corresponding head, each of said openings being of substantially rectangular cross section, and one of said heads being of smaller size than the corresponding opening to provide clearance to permit relative turning of the pin with respect to said last named bolster.
