This invention relates to a safety device for perforating machines of the general type shown in United States Letters Patent, No. 1,434,060, issued to me October 31, 1922.
The operation of machines of this character is generally controlled by means 'of a foot treadle, the depression of which by the foot of the operator is arranged to thrown. in a clutch and start the machine which continues in operation so long as the treadle is depressed. A momentary depression of the treadle, however, is suflicient to cause the machine to perform one complete perforating operation and generally thesemachines are operated in' this manner rather than continuously. Whenever, therefore, the foot treadle is moved suificiently to release the clutch, whether "that movement is accidental or intentional, the die-carrying plunger is op-- danger of injury if the operator is careful 5 since in presenting the work to the machine erated to perforate. In the ordinary and usual operation of machines of this class there is very little she is not, at any time, required to place her hands in jeopardy. The changing of the dies in the machine, however, necessitates the insertion of the hands between the plunger v and the work support, and if.,while the hands are in this position, the treadle is accidentally moved or depressed sufficiently to release the clutch, the plunger will descend and cut or crush the hands of the operator. It is,
. therefore, important and desirable to provide means for obviating such accidents because machines of this type are very powerful and rapid in their action, and the results from such accidents are apt to be very serious.

The dog 50 is held in a raised position by means of a spring 60 fastened at one end to a screw 61 set in the upper part of the lever 44 and at its other end to a screw 62 set in the dog 50. Two adjustable stops are provided for limiting the movement of the dog up and down, each consisting of a screw 63 threaded through a lug 64 on the lever 44 and held by a set-nut 65. A chain 67 fastened to the dog 50 may be connected to a foot-treadle or other means for starting the machine.
The machine is started whenever thedog through the operation of the foot treadle or other means is depressed sufficiently for the pin 51 by engagement with the collar 39 to pull the locking in downwardly out of engagement with t e cam 33. The spring 29 then forces out the clutch-pin 28 where it is en aged by the lug on the inner face of the be t pulley 25 and the main shaft is rotated. If the treadle is immediately released the locking pin is forced back by the spring 40 into normal position, but if not released, the rotation of the hub-block 26 through the eccentric strap throws the lever 44 outwardly withdrawing the pin from engagement with the collar 39 and the locking pin returns to normal position. In any event the locking pm returns to normal during, or at the end of the first half revolution of the hub-block and is in position to engage the cam and disconnect the clutch at the end of one revolution. The release of the treadle after the locking pin has returned to normal permits the do to return to normal the pin 51 being retracted in the do against the spring 56 topass the collar 39 y engagement with it. The stop screw 63 is so adjusted that the dog 50 can not at any time be depressed far enough so that the pin 51 will get under the collar 39 mounted on the locking pin and therefore upon the release of the treadle, the dog will at all times be raised to normal position by the spring 60.
In applyin my invention to the machine just describe means are provided for normally preventing access to the die-holding means, said means, however, being movable to expose the die-holding means to manipulation and one ,form of such means is shown consisting of a frame which. encircles and covers the die-holding means, that is, the end-plates 18 and nuts 19. The frame made up of two .arms 7 0 and 71 connected-at their forward ends by. ahand 72 and is. pivotally mounted on a shaft 73 set in the frame 10. In its normal position as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the frame covers the die-holding means and revents access thereto. In order to expose t e die-holding means the frame is pivotally moved intothc position shown in broken lines in said fi ures. For locking the frame in normal position, the arms 71 is provided with arearward extension 74 near the end of which ispivotally mounted on a screw 75 a locking arm or dog 76 having a III holds the dog in locked position. The end of the dog may be curved upwardly to form a finger-piece 82 whereby the operator may pull the dog downwardlytorelease the frame for forward movement. A hook 83 formed in the end of the extension 7 4 engages the pin 78 to limit the downward movement of the frame.
In order that the machine maybe rendered inoperative whenever the frame is moved away from normal position, any means maybe provided for renderingthe clutch inoperative and one such mcansis shown comprising aislide bar 85 adapted to be pushed under the lower end-ofthe locking pin 345to prevent its withdrawal from the camsblock to release the clutclrpin and start the machine. Theslide-bar is pivotally co n: nected'by a link 86 to an extension 8'? of the arm so that any movement of the frame to expose the die-holding means forces the slide-bar in under-the locking-pin. To pre vent the machine being started immediately upon thereturn of. the frame to normal position in case the operators foot happens inadvertently or carelessly to be on the treadle which might result in accident the end of the slide-bar maybe provided with a raised portion 90 which will prevent the slide-bar being withdrawn and the frame returned. to normal position until the operator takes the foot off the treadlev or releases all pressure thereon topermit the spring 40 to force the locking pininto its uppermost position as shown in Fig. 1, which is the only position in which the slide-bar may be withdrawn.

In a perforating machine, the combination with a die, die holding means and a 5 treadle operated clutch forconnecting said machine with a suitable source of power, of a guard for normally preventing access to said die-holding means while permitting free handling of the work in the machine, said 166 uard being movable to expose said die-holding means to manipulation and a slide mem ber operated by said guard for rendering the clutch inoperative to start the machine whenever said guard is moved out of normal posis tion, said slide member being provided with an abutment to prevent said guard being returned to normal position so long as there is any pressure upon the treadle.

The combination with a perforating machine provided with a clutch for connecting said machine to a source of power, a locking pin for normally holding said clutch inoperative and a treadle for withdrawing said locking pin to release said clutch to start the machine, of a safety device comprising a guard for normally preventin access to the die holding means, said guard eing movable to expose said die holding means to manipulation, and a member connected to said guard no and adapted, when said guard is moved to expose said die holding means. to be thrown transversely across the outer end of said looking pin to prevent said pin being withdrawn to release saidclutch.

The combination with a perforating machine provided with a clutch for connecting said machine to a source of power, a lock- 1 ing pin for normally holding said clutch in operative and a treadle for withdrawing said locking pin to release said clutch to start the machine, of a safety device comprising a guard for normally preventing access to the die holding means, while permitting free handling of the work in the machine, said guard being movable to expose said die holding means to manipulation, and a member connected to said guard and adapted, when said guard is moved to expose said die holding means, to be thrown transversely across the outer end of said locking pin to prevent said pin being withdrawn to release said clutch.

The combination with a perforating machine provided with a clutch for connecting said machine to a source of power, a locking pin for normally holding said clutch inoperative and a treadle for withdrawing said locking pin to release said clutch to start the machine, of a safety device comprising a guard for normally preventing access to the die holding means, while permitting free handling of the work in the machine, said guard being movable to expose said die hold- 5 ing means to manipulation, and a member connected to said guard and adapted, when said guard is moved to expose said die holding means, to be thrown transversely across the outer end of said locking pin to prevent said pin being withdrawn to release said clutch; said member being provided with an end abutment to prevent the guard being returned to normal position so long as there is any pressure on the treadle.
