Patented July 1, 1930 umrsn STATES P TENT OFFICE AUGUST H; WILMS, OF GHEYENNE, WYOMING SPARK ARRESTER AND cnusnnn Application filed Ju1y 21, 1926. Serial No. 124,088.
This invention appertains to sparkarrestl interfere with the draft of the locomotive.
Another salient feature of the invention is the provision of a plurality of rotatable cylinders arranged one within the other and in the path of the products of combustion and having openings therein for permitting the passage of smoke therethrough and for receiving the cinders or sparks, the screens or cylinders functioning I for retarding the sparks and crushing the same to a powder.
A further object of'the invention is to provide novel means for rotatably mounting the cylinders in the smoke box of thelocomotive and novel means for mounting the cylinders relative to one anotherwhereby the proper grinding of the cinders and sparks will take place. 7
A further object of the invention'is the provision of novel means for rotating the outer cylinder from a desired moving part of the locomotive, whereby the cylinders will be positively operated. y v
v A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel cinderand spark arrester and crusher of the above character which will be durable and efficient in use, one that will'be simple and easy to manufacture and one which can be placed upon the market and incorporated with a conventional locomotive at a comparatively small cost.
With these and other objects in view,'the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevationof a locomotive showing my improved device incorporated therewith,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of a locomotive partly broken away show-150 inglithe improved device incorporated therewit Y Y Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the locomotive showing the improved sparkandcinder arrester incorporated therewith,
- Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal section through the locomotive showing the'arrester in operative position therein, 1 1
Figure 5 is a transverse section through the boiler showing" the novel spark arrester' and crusher positioned therein, certain of the Icylind'ers ofthe spark arrester and crusher being shown broken away and in section to illustrate the arrangement of the slotstherem V Figure '6 is an enlarged detail section through the cylinders of the spark arrester and crusher illustrating the arrangement thereof relative to one another,
Figure 7 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal section through the cylinders, il-
lustrating the arrangement thereof relative .to one another and the slots therein.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar'reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates a 0011- ventionallocomotive andB the novel spark, arrester and crusher therefor.
As statedthe locomotive is of the usual typeand embodies the conventional boiler 10 having the conventional smoke box 11 therein forwardly of the flue sheet 12 Communicating with the smoke box' is the-smoke stack 13. A
Partitions 14; and 15 are: arranged in the smoke box and these partitions are spacedso at their forward ends,- as at 16 for receiving the novel spark arrester and crusher B. ,Arranged directly below the smoke stack a the partition 14. To one of the drive axles 18 "of the locomotive'is; secured a sprocket V a wheel 19thepurposeof which willbe later described} a a I r 'The improved spark arrester B comprises inner and outer cylinders .20 and 21. and" an intermediate cylinder 22; \Th'einte'rmediate :cylinder 22 is of a slightly less diameterthan the outer cylinder, while the inner cylinder2Q is of a slightly less diamet'er-thanthe intermediate cylinder22. The outer cylinder 21-. is'provlded with end heads"23- and these" heads are connected at their axial center to a transversely extendingfshaft 24. The shaft '24 has its'opposite ends journaledrespectivelyiin the. boiler 10 and in the cover plate i 25, which is provided for the opening '26 in the: smoke box. 5 This lopening=26 provides means whereby the cylinders 20, 21 and22'can -be placed inor removed-from the smoke box 11. Any suitable type of fastening elements 24 and the cylinder rests on 1 the inner sur- 1 face of the cylinder 22,while the cylinder 22 rests on the cylinder'2l at the bottom thereof for a purpose hereinafter described,
p a The outer cylinder 21 is provided with circumferential rows of staggered slots 28, while the intermediate cylinder2 2 isprovided with longitudinal rows of staggeredslots29. The
inner cylinder20is provided with rows of slots 30 similar to rows of slots-28;
v The slots in the several cylinders difier in width. LThosein'the'outer cylinder arewider than those" in eitherthe intermediate or the inner cylinder and th'ejslots in the interme- 1 diate cylinderareiwider than those in the inner cylinder. l
a The outer cylinder2lispositively driven from any preferred par't of the locomotive,
"such as-the valve gear'orthelike. In the present instance, "however, I have shown the *same'operated from one of the drive axles of 'the locomotive.iTo carry out this-arrangement the shaft 24 has keyed or otherwise securedtheretora spur gear 31 which meshes with a pinion :32 secured to a stub shaft 33.
This stub" shaftis rotatabl-y supported by the "plate 25 and a bracket 34: secured to said Eplate. YA sprocketwheel 35 islikewisese cured tothe stub shaft and is in alinement & with the ;sprocketl wheel '19 on the axle 18.
These'sprocket wheels '19 and 35 have trained a about the same a drive sprocket chain36 -This'me'chanism functions perfectly to bring i jabout the desired, results; but as stated, the
provided fonholdingthe-plate in posh therewith.
cylinder can be driven in any desired way.
Due to the fact'th'at the cylinder 22 is in engagement with the cylinder 21 the same will be rotated thereby and likewise the inner cylinder 20'i's rotated due to its contact with the cylinder 22. v
In operation of the improved device, the
products of combustion flow through the cylinders 20, 21 22 and out of the smoke stack motive are entirely eliminated. i a 7 Changes in details may be made without departingfrom the spirit or scope of the invention.
I claim:
- 1. In a locomotive provided with a smoke box and alstack, a spark arrester and crusher;
comprising inner, outer and intermediate rotatable cylinders,fthe inner and outer cylinders'having circumferential rows of slots V staggered and the slots of the inner cyllnder being'of less width than those in the outer 1 v i 0 linder he intermediate c linder havin The intermediateand nner cylinders 22, y y g f and 20 are looseand unsupported by the shaft longitudinal rows. of slots staggered, thezlast mentioned slots being 'of less width than the slots of the outer cylinder but of a greater width than the slotsof the inner cylinder,
and means oo-acting with said outer cylinder for directing the products of combustion through said cylinders.
'2'. In a locomotive provided with a smoke box and a stack, spacedpartitions in the box defining an opening, a positively driven rotary foraminouscylinder in said opening; and
