This invention relates to machines for cutting disks of cork rods and similar materials.
and has for its main object to provide a de viceof the mentioned character which may.
mentbetween the consecutive advances of the same, v V 1 Other objects of my invention include the provision of meanswhereby the advances of the cork rods may be suspended when desired, as, for instance, when some repairing is to be done onthe machine, also of means constructions, arrangements and vcombinato continuously and automatically sharpen a rotary knife used in the device and to. provide an adjustable limit and support for thecork rods to follow the reducing width of the knife.
Still further objects of the invention will be apparent as the specificationof the same proceeds.
With the above and other objects in view,
features of the invention include a rotating.
ring the peripheral portion of which carries a plurality of upstanding tubes each receiving a cork rod which projects through'a hole in the ring and is stopped by a stationary.
table underneath the ring spaced apart there-.
from. rotating diskknife projects into -the space between the ring and the table at one side thereof so as to slice ofi the disks are automatically advanced by weights slidable around the tubes, each tube having two 1 oppositely cut longitudinal slots into which projectstar wheels carried by and rotatable in the respective weight and engagingthe rod. The star wheels are prevented from to the weight when it is sliding downwards, but the rod is. prevented from. moving lip-f wards .by'spring catches operative in one di rection only so that when the weight is lifted 'beforeevery cut, by a roller thereon and a stationary cam intermittently engaging .it,
the weightgwill move upwardly in relation to the rod," the star wheels describing a partial rotationand rolling upwards on the rod, and the weight is again readyto sink, carrying the rod with it for anew feeding; A. second cam temporarily releases the spring catch on the rod at the momentit is desired topermit it to drop with the weight thereon, which is be made.
just before the new cut; isto lNith thesedand other objects inview, as. will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain tlons of fully des the parts that I shall hereinafter cribe and claim.

V The square shaft 78 is set into two bush lugs 84 and 85 (Fig. 6) set in the portion of i the flange between the piece 7 9 and the arm 81 on the one side, and said piece and the nuts 86 on the other side so that by tightening said nuts thewhole structure will be fixed and will be rotatable in the flange 40. A housing 87 is secured on the table 20 near the end 53 of the ring 50 slidably hous ing a vertical piece 88 the top of which carries a cam 89, the location of which is best shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 shows the inside of the housing with its front cover removed and it will be seen that a slot 90 is provided in the piece 88 and an eccentric cam 91 is operating in said slot set on a square shaft 92. Said square shaft struction on the shafts 78 of the spring catches 80 described hereinbefore.
The operation of my device is as follows: The cork rods 43 will be pushed down through the tubes 42, the upper spring catches permitting their downward movement and the star wheels rotating in their weights, while the rods 43- slide downward.
When all the tubes 42 are filled the ring 33 and knife 68 are set into rotation and the portions of the rods between the top of ring and the knife 68 will be cut off.
Taking one rod 43 as an example, after the cutting operation it will travel around supported by the lower spring catch 80. When it reaches the inner cam 39, the roller 7 5 on its weight 46 will ride onthe camand raise the weight in relation to its cork rod 43. When the respective rod 43 reaches the outer cam 89 the roller 82 on the arm 81 of the lower spring catch 80 will run thereon and releases the rod 43 from said catch, as
:- it will be obvious by inspecting the drawings.
7 The rod under the influence of its weight 46 will drop down onto the stationary ring 50 and another cork disk will be sliced ofl from its bottom end by the knife 68, after which the play repeats itself. The continuous raising of the weight is necessary as otherwise it soon would reach the top of the flange 40,
would come to rest thereon and would not lower the rod 43 any longer.
the rod since the star wheels 49 are prevented from rolling on the rod'43 in the direction corresponding to the sinking of the weight by their spring ratchet 98. (Fig. 5.)
It will be obvious that the thickness. of the While the p weight is permitted to sink it will be fixed to cork disks cutm'ayxbe regulated to any desired de reethroughthe bolts' and nuts .51 and-'52, raising or lowering the station-1 ary. ring 50. I
= The outer bottomcircumference ofthe ring 33mayshow the countersunk ring.99, (Figs. 2.and.- 5) the inner: portion of it being also,
countersunk asiat 100, so'cas to leave only. two comparatively narrow ring lugs 101 and 102 whereby the engagement of the knife disk 68 therewith will be greatly improved. An opening 103. (Fig. 1) may be provided in the table 20 underneath the place where the actual cutting takes place, said opening hav ing ,a' chute. '104"thereunder guiding the ready cork disks 105 into an appropriate container 106.
To continually keep the knife 68 in a first class condition, I provide automatic continuously operating sharpening means, indicated in general by the character 107 at the lower right hand end of Fig. 1. Said sharpening means comprises a standard 108 (Figs. 1 and 9) having a transverse piece 109 thereon,
which carries the adjustable frames 110 and 111 with the abrasive disks 112 and113irotatable around shafts 114 and 115 and pressed by springs 116 and 117 against the two sides of the knife disk 68.
Since by continuous use and sharpening the knife disk 68 may become so small in dlameter that it will not reach the rod 43. while yet supported at the end 53 of the stationary ring 50, to overcome this difficulty I provide a sliding piece 118 in the top of ring 50 at its end 53 adjacent to the place where the rods 43 approach the knife 68 (Figs. 1, 4 and 10) said piece being secured in its place by a screw 119 operable in a slot 120 in the ring 50. When the kiiife 68 is too much worn, screw 119 will be loosened, piece 118 advanced, and then secured again.
A cylindrical housing 121 also may be provided-to protect the knife 68.
What I claim as new, is: I 1. In a device of the class described, an
element carrying a plurality of rods; a cut- 7 ting element, the two having overlapping.
