ORNAMENTAL SHADE Filed Feb. 25, 1929 Y INVENTOR. 17 w. ,r' nh Patented July 1, 1930 PATENT I OFFICE MARY W. SMITH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN ORNAMENTAL SHADE Application filed February 25, 1929. Serial No. 342,550.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in an ornamental shade adapted for use particularly as a lamp shade or a similar article used for ornamental and reflecting purposes where light rays are permitted'to pass therethrough and are intended to be reflected thereby.
. rality of openings 10 each of It is an object of the present invention to provide ashade of thisclass which will be simple of structure, economical of manufacture and highly efficient in'use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a shade having an opaque or at least a translucent supporting body provided with a plurality of'openings formed there- 7 in closed with transparent or translucent closures.
It is another object'of the present invention to provide in a lamp shade of this class a supporting body having a plurality of openings formed thereinclosed with transparent or translucent closures and the closures held in position by sealing wax.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a device of this class of a supporting body having a covering of sealing wax mounted thereon so arranged and ordered as to simulate images and form designs of various types.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. p The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawings which form a part ofthis specification, and in which,
Fig. l is a side elevational View of the invention. r I
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional View taken on line 22 of Fig. 1
As shown in the drawings I provide a supporting body 9 made preferably from opaque material such as metal, a composition board and the like and shaped to provide the desired shape of the shade intended to be built. Formed in this supporting body 9 are a pluwhich is closed with a transparent or translucent closure 11 made from glass or the like, the closure being slightly larger than the opening 10 so 7 that the edgesthereof will overlap the edges of the opening. closures are of various shapes and designsand it is preferred that the openings be made to correspond to the contour of the closures. These closures are held in position by a layer 12 of sealing wax which is spread over the periphery or outer surface of supporting body 9. By using sealing wax of various colors, it-becomes possible to form on the outer surface of the body images and designs of various types, making a shade of an attractive and ornamental appearance.
It has also been found that the use of the sefaling wax affords a most effective method 0 supporting body and for all practical purposes these closures are normally so attached as to be irremovable. v In the form shown in the drawings, I have As shown in Fig. l, the l securing the closures in position on the also covered the inner surface of the support ing body 9 with a which permits the coveringof the supporting bodyand the coloring thereof to suit the individual tastes so that when used as a lamp shade, the color of the reflected light may be determined.
layer 13 of sealing wax I While I have illustrated and described the I preferred form of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise detail of structure shown but desire to avail myself of such variations and modfications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
I Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: p
A device of class described comprising: an opaque supporting body having a plurality of openings formed therein; a non-opaque closure for each of said openings; and a layer of sealing wax covering the outer surface of said supporting member and servingto retain said closures in position over sai openings.
In testimony wherof I foregoing specification.
MARY W. SMITH.
