Description

L. VERMILYA.
LIGHTNING-ROD. NO.176,8Z0, Patented May 2,1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' LELAND D. VERMILYA, OF DAYTON, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO EDWIN PIOKERING, OF WEST MILTON, AND BARTON PIOKERING,
OF DAYTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTNING-RODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 76,820, dated May 2, 1876; application filed April 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LELAND D. VERMILYA, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Lightning-Rod, of which the following is a specification My improvements consist of the manner of folding a metallic plate to make a lightningrod, and a device to connect the same.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the lightningrod. Fig.2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the connection.
A represents the lightning-rod, formed of metallic plate, and is first formed as shown in cross-section at Fig. 2, and then is given a spiral twist, which gives rigidity to the rod. The wings are of equal depth, the central being double and at a right angle to the single wings, which are in direct line with each other.
The connection 0 is shown in its relation to.
the ends of the rod at Fig. 1, and in cross-section at Fig. 3. The plate is formed so as to embrace the two wings of single plate, to which it is held by a countersink or by rivets or wire.
Galvanized-iron plate may be used for making this rod, but copper plate is preferable.
I amaware that the folding, twisting, and riveting together of strips of metal have been done. My purpose of folding a single strip of metallic plate and giving the same a spiral twist is to form a conductor that shall be rigid, simple, cheap, and effective.
What I claim as my invention is- A lightning-rod formed by bending a strip of metal upon itself, as shown, so as to form two right-an gled triangles, placed back to back, the whole being then twisted, substantially as shown and set forth.
