The present invention relates to an improved window construction and has for its prime object to provide sashes mounted in.
a frame in a weather-proof manner so that the sashes may slide witha minimum of friction.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a window structure which afi'ords ease of assembly and disassembly.
A further very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a window structure-of this nature which is simple, inexpensive to manufacture and install,
strong and durable, thoroughly efficient and reliable in use, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the descrip tion proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a window embodying the features of my invention,
. Figure 2 is a vertical section therethrough taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 1,
Figure 4 is another enlarged detail verti cal section taken substantially on-the line 4-4 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is still anotherenlarged detail vertical section substantially. on the line 5-5 of Figure 1,
Figure 6 is an enlarged detail horizontal section taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 1,
15 Figure 7 is a. sectional view through the improved frame structure taken vertically showing one of the side strips, and
Figure 8 is an enlarged detail vertical sec- .tion showing the sash weight pulleys.
Referring to the drawing it will be seen plates 12, and
a Figure 3 is an enlarged detail vertical sec-' tion taken substantially on the line 3-3 of 1928- .Sefial 1T0. 289,457.
that the main frame comprises upright side and horizontal top portions.
The side portions of the frame include the outer spaced plates 5, the inner face plates 6 and the plates 7. The plates 7 have their edges received in grooves 8 of the plates 5 and ingrooves 9 of the plates 6. Partitions 10 divide a space between the plates 5 and 6 in the two compartments or the sash weights. 6
The top portion 1 is similarly constructed including outer face plates 11, inner face plate 13 receivable in grooves 14 and 15 respectively of plates 11 and 12.
The parts thus far described are mounted in the window way and left to allow the masons and other workmen to complete their work before the window structure is completed. 4
A sill 16 is put in assembled position in the frame and weatherproofed in respect to the masonry 17 as indicated at 18. This sill is provided on its upper face with a longitudinally extending rib 19. Strips 20 are fastened to plates 7 by means of screws 21 or in any other suitable manner. The strips 20 are formed in sections leading along diagonal lines 22, Figure 7.
Each strip 20 is provided with a pair of ribs or rails R separated by a partition P. A strip 23 is secured to the plate 13 on the bottom surface thereof and has a longitudinally extending rib 24. The strip 23 is heldin place by means of a strip 28 and by having one edge in the groove 14.
' The strips 20 are held in place by molding 26 and have edges in grooves 8. The sashes 27 and 28 are provided in their side rails with grooves 29 to receive the ribsR. The top rail of the lower sash 27 and the bottom rail of the'top sash 28 have hook like interlocking projections 30 on their adjacent faces, Figure 5, to prevent rattling of the sashes when closed and to prevent draft between these two rails. a
The top rail of the upper sash is provided with a groove 31 to recelve the rib 27 while the lower rail of the bottom sash is provided with a groove 32 to receive the rib 19.
' Sash cords 33 are fastened to the sashes in the usual well known manner and extend through openings 34 over pulleys 35 housed as at 36. This sash cord pulle structure is .well known in the art being 0 the invisible i rom the above detailed description it will be seen that I have devised an improved window construction which has features of ease of assembly and disassembly. It will be seen that this design does away with the loose parting bead and saves the interior painting of the frame where the loose bead requires a new paint job after the replacement of new cords.
It will further be seen that I have devised a Window structure which affords the ad'- vantage of ease of operation. It is preferable to construct the strip 20 and the sill 16 of linseed oil soaked lumber so as to eliminate friction as much as possible and to strengthen the woodwork against the elements.
It is thought that the construction, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is: r
1. In a window structure, a frame having uprights with outer and inner spaced plates,
one pair of said plates being provided with vertical grooves, side strips between and at right angles to said outer and inner plates disposed in said grooves, each side stri being provided with vertically extending integral ribs and an integral partition between and spaced by vertical grooves from the ribs, a pair of sashes having grooved side rails receiving said ribs and portions disposed in said grooves, and holding sections detachably connected to certain of said plates and lapping over and holding the side strips in position.
2. In a window structure, a frame having a top portion with outer and inner vertically disposed spaced plates, one plate being grooved at its inner side, a horizontal top plate having an integral rib pendent therefrom, said top plate being disposed in said groove, means detachably attached to the other plate and arranged to lap under and retain the top plate in position, and a sash disposed in the frame and having its upper rail grooved to receive said rib.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
