IMPROVEMENTIN BARBED FENCE-WIRES'.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PARKER WINEMAN, of Bock Island, in the county of Bock Island and State of Illinois, have in'vented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbs for Fence- Wires, Ste.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a lfull, clear, and exact description thereot, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to @the letters ot referencev marked thereon, which form a part' of this sl'iecitication.

My invention relates to Wire fences, more .particularly to wire-fences which are designed for use in inclosin g the pasture-fieldset farms,

' or for conning cattle; and the invention consents a portion ot' a Wire fence constructed of three strands or wires twisted into the form of a rope, and to Which is given a curvilinear or wave-line form, as indicated by theletters ct a', so that it will he, in a measure, elastic when stretched and secured to the posts, and may expand or contract as influenced by the varying temperature to which it is exposed without straining the posts, and without losing its tension through expansion or breaking through contraction, the serpentine or curvilinear form of the Wire permitting of the eX- pansion and contraction'of the metal Without materially affecting its general tension or destroying its efticiency as a fence.

I have shown a fence-cable composed ot' p three Vstrands of wire; but it will be evident to those skilled in the art that a single curvilinear Wire Will possess the same advantages as regards expansion and contraction, and therefore I do not limit myself to the use of any specitic numberr of Wires or strands of Wlre.

B represents my improved barb device, which l prefer to make of wrought-iron from bars of metal of suitable form; but it may be made of steel or any suitable metal possessing the requisite degree of rigidity or hardness, strength', and toughness. The barb B has three points-radiating from a common center, at which point the metal is thickest, and fromiwhenceit gradually tapers on all sides toward the points.

Great rigidity and strength is. secured by the pyramidal form thus given-.to the projecting points of barb. against and support each other at the point ot' juncture, so that the points of the device cannot be bent or turned aside bythe pressure ot' the animals body, but will be sure to i penetrate the skin and give pain, thereby eaus ing the animal to keep at a safe distance from the fence thereafter.

I have shown the barb device having three points; vbut it ma-y have more, it' desired, the number of points being immaterial so long as they are made in the form shown and described. Y,

rIhe barb device may be readily applied to a three-strand wire fence, such as I have hereinbe-t'ore described, the points projecting from between. the strands of the coil, as shown byv the drawings.

I also coat rthe barb with tin o'r other noncorrosive material, so that it will not become oxidized by exposure to the weather and impart poisoned wounds to the -animals which may come in contact with it.

Having thus described .my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The barb device B, constructed, as described, With three points, b, radiating and tapering on all sides from a common center, in combination with the three-strand wire cable A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
