Description

Ju ne 24, 1930. -r.'w. PHILLIPS GOLF TEE Filed Aug. so, 1929 id il.-
Patented June 24, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE THOMAS w. PHILLIPS, or JAcKsoiv, MICHIGAN GOLF Application filed August 30, 1929. Serial No. 389,333.
may be carried in the fiat and readily set up for use and when erected is quite substantial and serves as aneifective seat vor support for the ball.
'A further object is to provide a golf tee having these advantages which may be employed for advertising purposes, presenting a substantial surface for 'advertising matter.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will definitely appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined in the claims.
A structure which embodies the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of one of my improved golf tees in erected position, a ball being shownthereon by dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central section.
Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of one, of the tees in the flat or knock-down.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan'view of a sheet containing a plurality of the tees.
My improved golf tees are formed of strips of bendable material, preferably light card board, and comprise a central portlon 1 constituting the top of the tee, intermediate portions 2 constituting the sides or upright portions of the tee, and end portions 3 and 4: constituting the base or bottom portions of the tee. The strip has transverse scoring lines 5 between these portions to facilitate folding.
The endportion 3 has a transverse slot therein while the end portion 4 has longie tudinal slots 7 extending from its end providing a tongue 8 adapted to be inserted through the sloth asshown inFig. 2', thereby interlocking the base portions and Se curely retaining the device in erected position with the side portions in downwardly diverging relation as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be readily understood that by telescoping the bottom portions more .or' less side the height of the tee can be considerably varied.
- The top portion provided with central hole 9' providing a seat for theball as indicated at 10 in Fig. 1. This seat opening is of substantial dimensions so that the ball will remain on the tee, even though the top is not exactly horizontal. I
In practice 1' preferably form the tee strips of a sheet of material as shown in Fig.
4;, the several tee strips being separated by the scoring lines 11 so that the tees may be removed from the sheet as desired. By forming in this manner the tees may be very economically produced and are I convenient to carry. 1
The tees are, Welladapted to receive advertising vmatter and may be produced cheaply enough so that they can be .employed purely as an advertising medium, if. desired.
Having thus described by invention what I clairnas new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A golf tee comprisinga strip of bendable material having transverse scores facilitating folding along predetermined lines,
and comprising atop portion having ahole vided with a transverse slot and the other being longitudinallyslotted from its end 'toprovide va longitudinaltongue'engageable with said slot whereby the tee is adjustably held in erected position with its portions in downwardly diverging re, lation.
2. A golf tee comprising a strip of bendable material having spaced transverse scores to facilitate folding along 'predeter mined. lines and providing a top portion, side. portions, and a pair of base portions.
adapted when the strip is folded on the scoring lines to lie in overlapping relation, the top portion having a hole therein providing a seat for the ball. 7 V I 3. A golf tee comprisinga strip ofcardboard having transverse scoresfacilitatin g folding along predetermined lines and comprising a central portion constituting a top member and having a hole therein providing a ball seat, intermediate portions constituting side members and end portions constituting base members adapted to be brought into overlapping relation and having interlocking parts whereby the device is supported in erected position.
-1. A golf tee comprising a strip of cardboard having transverse scores facilitating folding along predetermined lines and comprising a central portion constituting a top member and having a hole therein providing a ball seat, intermediate portions constiv tuting side members, and'eiid portions constituting, base members adapted to be brought into overlapping relation.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand. I ,7 THOMAS W. PHILLIPS.
