This invention relates to motor vehicles and particularly to window latiching means therefor.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple latching means for the sliding windows of a motor vehicle body.
Another object of the invention is to provide an eilicient latching device tor simultaneously latching two sliding windows of a motor vehicle.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection. with the drawing. which forms a part of this specification7 l5 and in which:
Fig. 1 is an interior view of a motor vehicle and 12 are the two sliding windows arranged in an opening in said partition. In Fig. 3 the partition 10 is shown as formed with a horizontal longitudinal runway 13 in which the sliding windows 11 and 12 are arranged to slide side by side. Inall of the views these windows are shown in their closed po' sition, that is, the position in which the windows entirely fill the opening between theront and rear compartments. The window 11 maybe moved in the runway 13 so that it entirely overlaps the window 1 2 and thereby opens one-half of the space between the conipartments. Or, both windows may be moved to the other side ont the vehicle body so that the other half of the space is `open.
The lower part of each window has a suitable sashy 14, secured to it in any desired way, as by cementing the window 1n a groove 1n the sash. and the adjacent vertical edges ot Y the windows have sash pieces 15 cemented or otherwise secured to the glass. These sash pieces 15 have handles 16 thereon by 'which the windowsmay be moved from one position to another. The glass of each windowis preferably notched or cut away at the lower inner corneras shown at 17, and when the windows are in their closed position these notches 17 are in alignment or be said `to register with each other.
This may be particularly observed in Fig.
`2.- For the'purpose of protecting the glass at the corner, a metal strip 18 is provided and adapted to fit thenotch 17'. This metal strip may be welded or otherwise secured to the-sash 15 to thereby retain it in place.
A latching bolt is provided for locking both of the windows in their closed position, and in the form shown this is a U-shaped bolt 19 having an arm 20-i`or each of the Windows 11 and 12. A spring 21 yieldingly retracts the bolt 19 and normally holds it in the position shown in Fig. 4. Vhen the bolt is moved into its latching position as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the latching arms 2O extend into the notches 17 and thereby prevent movement of the Windows 11 and 12.
The latching` bolt 19 is moved from its retracted position'to its latching position by a hand operated device shown in the 'form ot1 a shaft 22 havin g a handle 23 `for operatingit1 and a cam v24: mounted on the shaft beneath the latching bolt 19. Stops 25 and 26 limit the'moven'ient ot the cam. As shown, the stops 25 vand 2G are so positioned that when the cam isiinoved to engage the latchy bolt withy the notches in the windows the cam is stopped at the point of its greatest travel with its nose immediately beneath the latch boltand when the movement of the cam is re- `ersed the cam is againk stopped at the point of vits smallest travel with its heel immediately beneaththelatch bolt, thus the position of theflatch bolt is determined by the position of the handle actuating the cam.
' In Fig. et the latching bolt is -in its un latched position and the stop 26 is against the bolt 19. In Figs. 2 and 3 the latching bolt isA in its latched position and the stop 25 is against the bolt 19. This is the dead center position ot' the cam and consequently the reice tracting spring` 21 cannot operate to move the bolt to its unlatched position.
While I have herein described in some detail a specific embodiment of my invention, which I deemed to be new and advantageous and may specifically claim, I do not desire it to be understood that my invention is limited to the exact details of the construction,
vas it will be apparent that changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit or scopeof my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In Combination, a runway, a pair of windows slidable therein, said windows having notches adapted to register', a floating reciprocatory U-shaped latch bolt positioned in the runway, a spring between the bolt and the runway intermediate the arms of the bolt, a cam engaging the bolt by line Contact between the arms thereof, means actuating the cam to engage the notches and means limitingl the travel of the cam so that movement thereo in one direction will be stopped when the nose `of the cam engages the bolt and reverse movement of the cam will be stopped when the heel of the cam engages the bolt.
