To overcome this andother objections, it is one object of the invention to provide a combination device of the character described of improved construction whereby a bell, buzzer or indicator will be actuated Von relatively slight movements of the han` dle ofthe door-knocker.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved electrically operated bell,

- 2o buzzer or indicator, adapted to be readily installed to cooperate Awith existing door- 4 knocking installations without altering or modifying the latter.

A. further object of the .invention is to provide an installation of the character described which is rugged, adapted to withstand the roughest usage and may have electrically operated portions interconnected so as vto be practically'incapable of being put out of order by the severest banging with the knocker handle. r y

Still another object of the invention is to provide devices of the character described comprising few and simple parts, which shall be relatively cheap to manufacture and install, inconspicuous, and practical and eiiicient to a high degree in use.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be eXempliied'in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims. Y f

Fig. 1 is a plan cross-sectional view of a door jamb and fragmentary portion of a door with an installation of an improved combination door-knocker and an electrically operated bell embodying the invention, the bell, batteries and connecting wires being shown diagrammatically.

Referring in detail to the drawing, 10 denotes a knocker secured in position on the exterior side of a door ll in any well understood manner. The door 11 may be mounted for swinging against the jamb 12il of a (llior frame l2 by means of suitable hinges The knocker 10 preferably is of artistic design and may be of any well known construction. As here shown said knocker comprises a striker or handle 14 formed with interconnecting arms 14, which are pivoted at their upper ends 14b on a pin 16 support? ed by a lug 15'r1 of a backing piece 15. The backing piece 15 has a raised stud or anvil l5b on its side facing the handle at the end opposite said lug for receiving the blows of a protuberating boss or weighted head 14c of the handle.

The knocker 10 is actuated in the well known manner either by swinging the handle 14 and causing the head 14c to beat against the anvil 15b or by raising the handle and permitting it to fall by gravity so as to strike said head on the anvil. Frequently the knocker is actuated by a timid person who lightly taps therewith, or. one who uses insuilicient force to make known to the occupants in a remote place in the house the presence of the person knocking. It is one dominant purpose of the invention to provide means of novel construction to be simultaneously actuated on relatively slight displacement of the handle 14 from its lowered "f control plunger 2()a therefor, and conductor v ity. or the rcree of swinging the hand e b member 21 extending through a suitable recess 11 of the door 11.` Said members terminate in end contacts 21bon the door, edge-y surface 11'b as shown in Fig. 1. Spring control iingers 22 mounted in the jamb 12a are provided to detachably connect with said contacts on swinging the door 11 shut to form a circuit with a signal apparatus, either of the indicating or alarm type, as for ex ample, a bell 23 and lead wires 24, connecting with a suitable electric power source such as the battery 25 as shown in'lig.l 1.

The recess 11 ispreferablybored to extend into the door from the edge surface 1.1b and is vcircular inV cross-section as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Said recess is proportioned to snugly` receive therein the conductor members 21 and switch 20 assembled asa unit structure by a stii interposed bar 26 and interconnecting spaced` bands 27. The plunger 20 is mounted to reciprocate through a bearing member 20E and preferably is limited in its movement by providing stop nut20", the outer free end'20" of said plunger being'iitted with an adjustable capnut 20d having a locknut 2()t which is adaptedl to set the rswitch and 'theknocker-handle in proper cooperating relation. The bearing member 20 may be extended rearwardly as at 20h to form a support for the member portions 21 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 thereby facilitating the assembl and installation.

The operation of t e improved doorknocking installation will now be apparent.
