This `invention relates to improvements in pressing irons, and more particularly to a detachable handle therefor.

The primary object of the invention rea sides in an electrical sad iron provided with a quickly detachable handle for facilitating convenient packing of the same in a traveling bag, trunk or the like so as to require but a minimum amount of storage space.

Another object of the invention is to provide a detachable handle, and means for maintaining an air space between the handle and thel body of the iron to prevent heating up of the handle whereby the said handle is kept cool at all times for permitting direct contact therewith during use.

Afurther object of the invention is the provision of a pair of double headed studs secured to and extending above the body of the iron for reception in slots provided in the handle member, the manipulating means for maintaining the handle member in rigid engagement with the body of the iron, the

heads of the studs acting to support the base of the handle member in spaced relation to the body of the iron.

p With these and other objects in view, the

invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are pointed out in the appended claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring more particularly to the draw ings, the reference character 10 designates my improved sad or pressing iron in its entirety which includes an iron body 11 pro. vided with the usual ilat pressing surface 12, and in the present instance the said body is shown as that of an electric iron, although an electric iron has been shown in the drawing, I do not wish to limit myself thereto as the iron may be of the ordinary type which may be set overa stove for the purpose of heating the same. Threaded into the body 11 through the top thereof are the threaded shanks 13 of a pair of studs lei.k Each stud including a circular head 15 and an annular lange 16 in spaced relation to'said head. In'other words, the studmay be termed dual head studs for a purpose to be presently explained..v The studs'l-- are disposed in spaced relation to each other and in longitudinaly alinement, while the top of the bodyV 11 intermediate the stud is provided with a conicavity orv recess 17.

Detachably connected' to the iron body 11 is a handleimember 18 which includes a fiat metal base 19, having front and rear upwardly extending `arms 20 to which the hand grip 21 is connectedyand which bridges the space between the front and rear arms 20. The base 19provided with a pair'of keyhole shaped slots 22,V the enlarged portion 23 being slightly larger in diameter than the headsl of 'thestuds, while the reduced portion 24; of the said slots are ofa width to snugly accommodate the shank 13 ofthe stud, fit being understood that the handle member is applied to the iron'body .by insertingA the head '15 of the stud through the enlarged port-ion 23 of the 'slot and then shifting the lhandle member longitudinally in a forwarddirection. In this position the flanges or head 16 of therespective studs serve asspacers for spacing'the base 19 of the handle member away from the top of the iron body 11. For the purpose of securing the handlemember'lS in connection with the iron body, the base 19 is vprovided with a centrally enlarged boss 5, which threadedly receives the shank 26 of a set screw 27, the same being provided with a manipulating head 26 which is in reach of the lingers of the hand of the operator when grasping the hand grip 21. l/Vhen the handle member hasr been shifted in the manner just eX- plained, the axis of the set screw is in alinement with the concavity 17 and upon downward screwing of the set screw, the free end of the shank will seat in the concavity, thus placing a tension or upward pressure upon the base 19 which locks the handle member against accidental longitudinal movement. It will be understood that to separate the handle member 21 from the iron proper, it

is only necessary to unscrew the set or clamping screw 27 so that the Jfree end of the shank clears `the top face of the iron body, whereupon the tension on the base 19 is relieved and the handle member is Vfree to be moved longitudinally in a rearward di-V rectiontocause the head 15 of the stud to bein register withvthe enlarged portion 2'30f'V the key hole shaped slot. The handle i'sthen '1b free to be lifted from the iron body for packing purposes, it being appreciated that a fixed handle such as now used in connection with electric irons renders the iron cumbersome for convenient packing ina suit- 15 case, trunk or like container.
