The objects attained in the lmproved dispensing apparatus relatefmore especially to means for draining the liquid measuring container, the apparatus being of the visual measurement type in which the liquld 1s pumped into an elevated glass container provided with a gauge for indicating the measurement of the liquid dispensed. Under the underwriters regulations it re quired that the containers be drained upon discontinuing the service, as at the end of a day. The invention consists in improved connections for draining the container: through the serving hose to the storage tank.
A feature of the improvements consists in means requiring positive operation for positioning the hose nozzle for effecting the drain connection with a pipe line leading to the storage tank, which act at the same time to open the drain valve between the container and the hose to insure complete draining of the liquid from the container when the nozzle is connected with the return storage line. Reverse movement of the mechanism acts in like manner to close'the drain valve and to restore the hose connection to normal relation for dispensing liquid.
The pump as here shown is a single cylinder, reciprocable piston type of liquid dispensing pump, the main structural features consisting in the cylinder 1 coacting with a suction chamber 2, measure setting mechanism 3, visual liquid measure 4: and serving hose 5, operation of the pump being by means of a hand lever 6 connected to the cylinder piston rod by a rack and segment 7--S, the pumped liquid being delivered from the cylinder through a pipe line 20 into container at.
The measure setting mechanism 3 consists of a dial 9, pointer and finger piece 10 connected to a rotatable rod 11 by gears 12, a series of stops 13 being arranged on the rod for limiting the movement of a rod 14 connected to a v atically slidable discharge tube 15 in the measuring container &. T he stops 13 are arranged in different radial planes and are equally spaced one from another in axial planes on rod 11 to be set by manip'ula tion of the finger piece 10 to effect engagement between a selected stop 13 on rod 11 and a bracket 16 connected. to'rod 14; and operable on a guide rod 16*,on the operation of rod 14 by a crank 17 and rack and pinion connection 18. The discharge tube 15 is thus set for the amount of liquid to be dispensed, the surplus liquid in container 4 above the open end of the tube being drained through the tube, a'connection 21 and drain pipe 21 into the storage tank. The liquid remaining in the container is thus measured as the amount to be dispensed, the same being delivered through the serving hose 5. An indicator 19 in the measuring container serves as visual evidence to the customer of the amount of liquid he has received.
The features of structure and operation thus far described, except as to minor refinements, are more or less common in apparatus of this character and do not, except indirectly, constitute novel subject matter of the present invention.
The novelty of the invention consists in the means for draining the measuring eontainer through the serving hose into the supply tank and the connections which insure complete draining oi the container and any liquid remaining in the hose connections at the end of a day or any time when service operation of the pump is to be discontinued.
These novel features consist in a branch drain pipe 22 connected to the main drain line 21, the pipe being extended outside the lower pump casing and turned upward, the
container 4 and the supply tank.
The detail parts of the branch drain pipe connection consist of the pipe 22. a cap or cover 24 for the outer end of the pipe hinged on a cover housing 25 fitted on the end of the pipe, the cover being spring-tensioned (not shown) or weighted to be self-closing upon. removal of the nozzle. A lever 26 is pivoted on the cover housing 25 as indicated at 27 and is adapted to be moved in a hori zontal plane over the cover cap 24, when the nozzle is not in the end of the pipe, thus act-- ing to seal the drain connection during the serving periods of operation of the apparatus. To make the sealing more effective the throat of the cover housing 25 is fitted with a gasket 28 adapted to be engaged by an inner flange of the cover cap 24, the lever 26 being provided with set screws 29 adapted to be adjusted to the outer surface of the cover cap to effect pressure thereon when the lever is moved to locking position. The set screws 29 act in like manner to engage an annular flange30 (see Fig. 9) on the hose nozzle when the same is in position in the drain pipe thus to seal the drain opening during the periods the-apparatus is not used. WVhen the hose drain connection is to be effected, the indicator 1() is moved to the Drain position 33 on dial 9 which permits drain tube 15 to move to its lowermost position, the cover cap 24 is opened and the end of the hose nozzle is inserted into the open end of pipe 22, lever 26 is moved to closed position thus bringing the pressure screws 29 into engagement with the nozzle flange to effect sealingoi the drain connection. A lever 34, pivoted on the housing 25 as indicated at 35 is moved upward from its open position 36, back of lever 26 to hold the same in closed relation, the apertured end of the lever being brought into register with an apertured lug 37 on lever 26 to permit of interlocking the parts by any suitable means, as the padlock 38.
Lever 34 is connected to a rod 39 which has a segment 40 connected to its opposite end, the segment being further connected to the lower end of a rod 41 Which is connected at its upper end (see Fig. 1)"to a pivoted lever 42, the opposite end of which is turned to engage an extension 43 of the drain valve lever 44. Thus as lever 34 is moved to closed position the valve lever 44 is moved, through the connection 39-40414243 to open the drain valve 45 sufiiciently to completely drain the hose connection of any liquid remaining in the serving line.
To compel the attendant to set the indicator 3 at Drain position when adjustment is being made to discontinue service, a latch or dog 46 (see Fig. 3) is pivoted on a collar 47 on the main drain line 21, one end 46 of thedog being weighted to cause thedog, as viewed in Fig. 3, to move in clockwise direction by gravity, the opposite end being adapted, as the dog is thus moved, to engage a notch 40 in segment 40 and prevent operation of the segment and of lever 34 except when the dog is moved out of engagement with segment, this being effected by an extension16 of bracket 16 when drain tube 15 is moved to its lowermost position. To insure complete draining of the container 4 and the hose connection an adjusting screw 46 in the end of lever 46 adapts the parts to be set with exactness to release segment 40 only when the drain tube 15 is completely lowered. i
The upper hose connection, as here shown. includes a liquid level gauge consisting of opposite glass 48 assembled in a box housing 49, the gauge being provided on opposite sides with a noticeCorrect measure when glass empties,this being for the attention of the customer. As the drain aperture 50 is visible through the glass 48 to the bottom of the aperture, the customer is assured full measurement'of liquid when the gauge and also the hose are fully drained.
A refinement of the pump as here shown consists in a glass cover 51 for themeasuring container, a dome 52 disposed over the COVGI and a lighting fixture 53 supported on the dome, a single electric bulb 54 serving to light the fixture 53 and also to diffuse light under the dome around and through the glass 51 into the interior of the measuring container thus effecting complete Visibility of the liquid in the container as customers are served at night.
Having described our invention, We claim: -l. A liquid dispensing pump including in combination, a serving hose having a nozzle, an open end drain line having a housing adapted to be connected With the hose nozzle, a hinged cover applied to the said end for normally closing the drain line, the said cover being operatively associated With the housing which is provided With a flange and gasket shaped to conform to a portion of the said nozzle, and a lever operable for successively securing the said cover and nozzle respectively relative to the said end. A liquid dispensing pump including in combination, a serving hose having a nozzle, an open end drain line adapted to be connected with the hose nozzle, a housing including a cover applied to the said end for normally closing thedrain line, the housing being provided With a flange and gasket shaped to conform to a portion of the said nozzle, and a lever operable into pressure relation with the said like portions respectively for securing successively the cover and nozzle relation to the said housing. A liquid dispensing pump including in combination, a serving hose having a nozzle, an open end drain line adapted to be connected with the hose nozzle, a housing including a cover applied to the said end for normally closing the drain line, saidhousing being provided with a flange and gasket shaped to conform to a portion of the said nozzle, and an adjustable pressure element operable to engage similarly shaped portions respectively of the cover and nozzle for securing successively the cover and nozzle relation to the said housing.
4. A liquid dispensing pump including in combination, a serving hose having a nozzle, an open end drain line adapted to be connected With the hose nozzle, a flanged housing including a cover applied to the said end for normally closing the drain line, the housing being provided with a flange and a gasket shaped to conform to a portion of the said nozzle and of said cover, and a pressure element operable to engage successively similarly shaped portions of the said nozzle and of the said flange respectively for securing the cover and nozzle relative to the said housing.
5. A liquid dispensing pump including in combination, a container for measuring liquid, an adjustable discharge tube in the said container, a valve and a serving hose for the container, a drain line adapted to be connected With the hose, means for adjusting the discharge tube, the said means including a gauge having a maximum'drain indication, normally locked means controlled by the said gauge and operable only When the gauge is set at the said maximum indication for securing the hose and the drain line, and means for opening the valve establishing connection between the hose and container.
6. A liquid dispensing pump including in combination, a container for measuring liquid, an adjustable discharge tube in said container, a serving hose for said container, a drain line adapted to be connected with the hose, means to lock the hose to the drain line, and means cooperating with the discharge tube to prevent the last named means from acting until the discharge tube is in its full discharge position.
7. A liquid dispensing pump. including in combination, a container for liquid, an adjustable discharge tube for said container, a service hose having a valve therein for said container, a drain line adapted to be connected With the hose, common means for locking the hose to the drain line and said valve open, and means cooperating With the discharge tube to prevent said common means from acting until the discharge tube is in its full drain position.
8. A liquid dispensing pump including in combination, a container for liquid, anadjustable drain tube for said container, a drain line, a service hose for said container having a control valve, and means to con nect the service hose to the drain line ant open the valve, including a rocking shaft and a latch to lock said shaft except When the discharge tube is in its lowermost position.
