This invention relates to a metal ridge cap for peaked roofs and has for its object to provide a novel construction which will make a tight joint at the ridge and which is of such form that it will accommodate the upper ends of slates or composition or other forms of shingles. To this end the improved ridge cap, which is to overlie the ridge of a roof, consists of a. strip of metal which is to extend, either in one part or in sections, the entire length of the ridge of the roof, and which is bent to form two parts corresponding to the slant of the roof to which it is to be applied. This sheet metal ridge cap is preferably'of copper, or other more or less ductile metal, so that it may be stamped to provide struck-out ribs which will add to the stiffness thereof. The lower ends of the ridge cap are doubled or folded to provide a strip to be attached to the boards of the roof and also to provide doubled longitudinal flanges which are strong and which may be bent down over the tops of the shingles or slates to make tight joints, this bent-down, doubled flange thus overlying the fastening strip and its nails.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the improved ridge cap, in operative relation to the peak of aroof, the section being on line 2-2, Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a broken-out elevation of the .improved ridge cap.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes the upper ends of the boards of a roof, and 13 the ridge pole of a peaked roof. 14 denotes the improved ridge cap consisting of a strip of sheet metal, preferably of copper or other ductile material, bent to form two parts corresponding to the slant of the roof. The lower ends of said two parts are bent inwardly at right angles and from the lower or inner edges of said parts the metal is again bent at right an les to form fastening strips 15 extending cownward in the planes of the slanting parts of the cap, and through which strips nails 16 may be driven to secure the ridge cap to the boards of the roof, and above the said strips 15 in the said inwardly bent parts are each constructed with an outwardly extending doubled flange 17.

WVhen the fastening nails are to be inserted the doubled flange 17 will be in-the raised position shown more clearly at the left of Fig. 1. The shingles 0r slates 18 may next be inserted in place and the said doubled flange will then be hammered down, as shown at the right of Fig. 1, and also at the right of Fig. 2, to form a'tight joint at the upper ends of said shingles or slates, said 11ammered-down flange being over the fastening strip 15 and the securing nails.
The improved ridge cap is preferably formed with struck-out stiffening ribs 19.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides an efficient metal r ridge cap for peaked roofs andwhich is adapted. for use with slates or with composition or other forms of shingles; which may be easily secured in place and when so secured will afford reliablewater-tight joints at the ridge of the roof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentz- A sheet metal ridge cap, for peaked roofs, 7 consisting of a strip of sheet metal bent at its central part to form twoslanting members corresponding to the slant of a peaked roof, the lower ends of said slanting members having parts which are bent inwardly at right angles to said slanting members, said inwardly bent parts having fastening strips at their lower edges, said strips extending in the planes of said slanting members, and said inwardly bent parts having, between their 8 outer and inner edges, doubled, outwardly extending flanges adapted to be bent down over said fastening strips and thus cover fastening nails.-
