The new mechanical structure, combination of parts and operation thereof are the lmportant factors of the invention in providing the desired function of the key action, a further description of the operative prim ciple therefore, follows: I
incident of response, E to A, of the type bar a :The key lever 12 is described as having two incidents of operation before completing its operative cycle, namely; the incident of'depression and the incident of release. The incident of depression is disclosed by the movement of the key lever 12 from radius B to radius C, and the incident of release is disclosed. by the movement of the key lever back from radius C to radius B. The type bar 6 is described as having two incidents of opera tion before completing its operative cycle, namely; incident of response and incident of recoil. The incident of response of the type bar 6 is disclosed by the movement of the type bar from its initial rest radius E to printing point A, at radius'F, forming arc G" from pivot 9. The incident of recoil of type bar 6 is disclosed by its movement frointhe printing point A back to normal rest E thereby completing its operative cycle. These incidents of operation are, of course, common in nonreversely breaking type bar actions in so far as the incident of response, E to A, of the type bar 6 occurs simultaneously with the incident of depression, B'toC, of the key lever 12, and the incident of recoil, A to E, of the type bar occurs simultaneously with the incident of release, C to B, of the key lever. In other words, the operative cycle of the type bar and that of the key lever are simultaneous in a nonreversely breaking con nection, but the broad function inherent to the present key action relative to the correlation of incidents of operation of'the key lever with that of the type bar is in providing the operative expedient by which loot-h the and the incident of recoil, A to E, occur during the one incident of depression, B to C,

The operative expedient of the present key action is accomplished in this case by a reverselybreaking actuating linkage connect -w, in a system of accelerating linkage connecting the type bar and key lever moving the type to printing point upon depression of the key lever, and reversely breaking said actuating linkage alternatively disinterlockingn" said actuating linkage returning the type bar to normalposition while the key lever is in depressed position. Upon depression of the key lever the upward end of the actuating lever 23 moves forwardly carrying with iii-i7 the horizontally disposed fulcrum trip lever 2a with longitudinal movement the operative relation of the roller trip 25 within the saddie-backed seat 18 provided by the angular vibratory lever 18 aided by the interlocking? hump 18 operatively interlocks the roller trip 25 with said angular vibratory lever moving the latter forwardly thereby actuating the accelerating linkage forwardly; and upon a quick depression stroke of the 'key lever the energy of gravity through the weight of the type bar compresses or energizes the accelerating spring 22'providing a resilient or light touch at the beginning of depression of the key lever and as momentum T of the key lever increases the energy stored up in said accelerating spring reacts upon the type bar through the slidable link 21 and moves the former toward the printing point. Bythetime the type bar has ar ived at 26 5 point onarc G to about radius Ea, Fig. 11, the depending trip arm 24 of the fulcrum trip lever communicates with the. forward fulcrum trip bur 23 provided by the-actuating lever 23 and diverts the forward movement x Y of the fulcrum trip lever 24 vib ratorily upward about its pivot 24* thereby tripping the roller trip 25 out of operatively interlocked relation with the angular vibratory lever 18,

The disclosed means of operatively elongating the accelerating linkage connecting the type bar and angular vi bratory therefore operates the type bar 6 with about one-fourth of an inch to three-eighths of an inch stroke of finger key 13 contrasted withrthe usual ive-eighths of an inch inherent to a nonreversely breaking key action. 7 r
The slidable elongation with its alternatively shortening of the accelerating linkage provides a key action wherein the incident of recoil of the type bar is relatively quicker than the incident of its response in order that the type are G may be cleared as rapidly as possible when several keys are being manipulated in rapid succession there being no means obstructing the recoil of the type bar after printing impact the printing percussion aided by gravity returns the type bar with eflicacious recoil momentum. However, when there is no connecting means to retard the recoil of the type bar, the excessive rec-oil percussion oi the type bar with the cushion rest .11 is also inherent to a reversely breaking actuating coupling. The applicant, therefore, endeavors, in this case, to provide a key action wherein the recoil of the type bar is absorbed by means which substantially neutralizes the recoil percussion of the type bar with the cushion rest 11 in the following manner Fig. l discloses that the relative normal position of accelerating spring 22 and slidable portion or" the sleeved link 21 are communicative and the spring has reached its limit of expansionwhen the momentum of the type bar has slidden sleeved. link 21 away from said spring 22. In a key action for a typewriting machine, a type bar, a key lever,a pivotrod for the rear end of said'key lever, an angular vibratory lever looseiy mounted on said key lever pivot rod'beside its key lever, areversely breaking actuating connection opera-tively connecting the key lever and vibratory lever, an accelerating linkage operatively connect-- ing the key lever and vibratory lever moving the type bar to printing point upon rela tively short depression stroke of the key le-- ver, moans reversely breaking said actuating connection before printing impact of-theeating with and limiting the backward move-- ment of said vibratory lever, a vertically disposed return spring supported by a bar extending across the rear of the machine, the upper end of. said spring operatively connect ing the vibratory lever for returning the vibratory lever to normal position of rest against said buffer bar before the type bar returns to normal position While the key lever is in depressed position, means restoring said reversely breaking actuating connection to I ment substantially coincident with the operative cycle 01 said type bar; a vibratory lever, a plunger link operated by said vibratory lever and operatively connected to the sleeved link and an accelerating spring carried by said plunger link having a coacting cycle of movement substantially independent of the cycle of movement of the type bar or the cycle of movement of the key lever; a system of reversely breaking actuating linage 'operatively connecting the key lever and vi bratory lever comprising an actuating lever, a fulcrum trip lever and a roller trip having a coacting cycle of movement substantially coincident With the operative cycle of the key lever, 21 coacting half-cycle of movement ofthe actuating lever, fulcrum trip lever, vibratory lever, plunger link, accelerating spring and sleeved link moving the type bar to printing point upon depression of the key lever, means reversely breaking said system of actuating linkage returning said vibratory lever, plunger link and accelerating spring to normal position completing their cycle of movement independently of the cycle of movement of the type bar and returning the type bar to normal position completing its cycle of movement While the key lever is in depressed position; means restoring the actuating lever, fulcrum trip lever and roller trip to normal operative position completing their cycle of movement upon release of the key lever.

In a type key action, a type bar, a key lever, a pivot rod for the rear end of said key lever, an angular vibratory lever loosely mounted on said ke V lever pivot rod beside its key lever, a reverse y breaking actuating connection operatively connecting the key lever and ibratory lever, an accelerating'linkage comprising a plunger link, asleeved link including an accelerating spring coiled about the circumference of said plunger link, slidable means connecting the plunger link and slidable sleeve operatively elongating the accelerating linkage actuating a full response stroke ofthe type bar to printing point upon a relatively short depression stroke of the key lever, means rcverse'ly breaking said actuatlng connection after printing impact versely breaking actuating connection to normal operative position upon release of the key lever.
