THOMAS STEIN 633,01 LOB-LIN, OHIO,- ASBIGNOR TO THE THEW OI IIORAIN, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO rowan rm Application filed February 15, 1929. Serial No. 840,146.
This invention relates 'to power trip means for a latch such as isemployed in connection with the dump bottom of the dipper of a power shovel. The object of the invention 15 to provide power means for tripping the latch, which power means shall be. operator controlled to trip the latch; and which when the latch is tripped, will automatically eifect its own release from the applied ower.
To th1s end I employ a driving member arranged for continuous rotation as by the governor-cont olled power means b which the shovel is o erated, a driven mem er having an eccentric portion associatedwith the latch to trip the same as the eccentric is thrown in one direction, means for yieldably urging the eccentric in latch-releasing direction, and'overrunning clutch means between the driving and driven members. The overrunning clutch meansto which reference is had is characterized b I having portionspositively interengagea 'le when the driven member is being actuated by the driving member but also characterized by ability to automatically disengage; the drive ,llpon overrunning of the driven member,
that is, when' the driven member moves ahead of the driving member. Thear erator-operate rangement is therefore such that after the eccentric completes its throw in latchtripping direction and starts its return throw. in latch-releasing direction, the ieldablc means will cause the driven memer to overrun the drivin member and thus automatically re lease t e tripping apparatus from its ower drive. "T ere ore, op-.
d means being provided for effecting or initiating the drive, the operator need A merely instantaneously actuate such means, and thereafterthedipper latch will be automatically tripped by power, and the nected. urther, however, should the a 'paratu's fail to trip the latch in its first cycle I certain of the ower ahnost immediately discon-.
ratus can result in no damage to the parts.- The means yieldably urging the-eccentric in latch-releasing direction, may be resilient means incorporated as in the connection between the latch trip and the eccentric; or it may be a weight by which one of the' .driven parts is urged by gravity in an abso-. lute direction; or it may be both of these means arranged to act together.
The exact nature of my invention together with further objects. and advanta es thereof will be apparent from the followlng description taken in connection, with the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a more or less diagrammatic side elevation ,of a power shovel structure showing my invention incorporated as a part thereof; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of parts particularly pertaimng to myinvention and appearing in Fig. 1;- Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of parts appearing in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail of parts indicated in Fig. 1, Fi s. 2, 3, and 4 being views in the horizonta plane. a With reference now to the drawings, 1 is a carriage of the endless tread type indi-- cated, 2 is a turntable mounted thereon, 3 is a boom,4 a dipper stick and 5 a dipper. It will be understood tha movements of the boom are controlled through the riggin sirovnnconrm,
indicated,'by power means on the table 2,
not shown, but which may be the usual continuously-running governor-controlled internal combustion engine, acting through suitable drums and clutches for the purpose.
The dipper 5 is provided with a dump closed position or bottom 6 having a latch 7 by which the botthe sha with the shaft; but wherebyclockwise moveyoke 14. The yoke 14 is in turn carried by a lever 15 having fulcrum connection with the frame as at 16 on the fired bracket 17,
ment of the lever 15, Fig. 2, will slide the member 10 outwards of the shaft 8 and away from the flange 23.
On the extremity of the shaft 8 is a driven member 24 freely rotatable thereon as by bushing 25 and held in position by cap 26. The members 10 and 24 are provided with cooperatingmluteh teeth 27 and 28. The shaft 8 rotating in counterclockwise direction Fig. 1, the forward faces 27Jof its clutch teeth 27 lie generally in the centralv plane of the shaft and are preferably slightly undercut, but the rearward faces 27 slope away as indicated. The forward and rearward faces of the teeth 28 are correspond ingly arranged. p
The member '10 thus provides means .whereby the member 24 may be optionally driven the shaft 8. This is accom lished by operator-operated effort upon the amide 19 to slide the member 10 to engage its teeth 27 with the teeth 28 of the member 20. Such driving engagement, where the member 20 is driven by the shaft 8, is positive and selfmaintaining owing to the described arrangement of the forward faces of the. teeth 27 and the corresponding rearward faces of the teeth 28. 1
It will be apparent, however, that should the member 24 overrun the member 10, that is, should it rotate in the same direction but at a higher speed than the member 10, the rearward faces of the teeth 27 will cooperate with the forward faces of the teeth 28 and act as cams to shift the member 10 upwards Fig. 2 and clear the two sets of teeth from each other, thus releasing the drive from the member 24.
The member 24 has an eccentric portion 29 which has connection with the latch 7. This connection is by wayof the latchline 30. The boom 3 carries a shaft 31 upon which is a freely rotatable sheave 32 and a drum 33. The line 30 passes from the trip 7 over the sheave 32, over a sheave 34 mounted on the eccentric 29 and returns to the drum 33. The drum is yieldably urged as by a spring 35 in a direction to take up slack in the line 30 or pay out on the line so that bucket movements ma be accommodated without elfect upon t e latch. The strength of the spring 35 and the relation of the parts is such, however, that a quick jerk upon the line 30, as by moving the eccentrically mounted sheave. 34 about the this pinion the drum 33 may be keyed to the shaft 31 ,been described as urged in latch-line winding position, the spring 35is not essential provided the pitch diameter of the drum bethat of the imon w'hich cooperates with the rack 4' of the dipper stick 4. If the drum and.
0 have the same pitch diameter to which the inion is also keyed, and it will be apparent t at the line 30 will be paid out or drawn in according tothe movements of the dipper 5, all without interfering with ,the bight of 'the line 30 which passes over the sheave 34. Thus the sheave 34 is equally operable to trip the latch as before.
Thus when the ,member 24 is driven by the shaft 8 the eccentric will be thrown to give the desired latch-tripping jerk to the line 30. Also, after theeccentric passes its center with respect to the drum 33, and is on its return or latch-releasing stroke, the action of the spring 35 will act to move the member 24 in the direction in which it is driven by. the shaft 8. Thus the member 24 will be caused to overrun the member 10 and by virtue of the clutch teeth described automatically throw 0a the drive. a
In order to assist the spring 35 I may provide additional means for balancing the member 24 to provide an additional tendency of the same to overrun its driving member through the desired portion of its cycle of movement. This means comprises a coun ter-weight 33 which as shown is simply an additional enlarged arm on the member 24 and so arranged with relation to the eccentricity of the arm 29 that the center of gravity of the member 24 naturally tends to maintain it in the same absolute position in which the spring 35 and cooperating parts tend to maintain it.
latch, disengagement of the clutch being automatically effected by the means described. However, should the latch not be tripped in the first cycle of operation of the member 24, or should the operator continue depression of the handle 19, the cycle is simply repeated until the latch is released or until the handle 19 is released.
What I claim is:
Thus during the return stroke of the eccentric, when the spring lli 1.
