AIt has been the practice heretofore to em- 6 ploy a screw or screwl eye adapted to pass through eyelets-or grommets in the upper hem of the awning and to be driven into the frame work of a window or porch, sa1d eye,

screw or the like to be lunscrewed from the .10 wooden frame work when it was desired to take the awning down. In addition to consuming considerable time and effort 1n screwing and unscr'ewing the large number` of fastening devices employed in putting up or taking down the awnings, this practice further resulted in considerabley damage to the wooden frame Work on which the awnings are supported, since, as is well known, "a screw or the like is liable to cease to hold after it has been driven once or twice at the same point or into the same hole, thus renderingit necessary to plug the old holes made by'previous driving of the screw, or the driving of the screw into lthe wooden frame work at adierent-point, with obvious disadvantages.` Furthermore, under this practice it was necessary to collect and carefully preserve the large number of screws or screw eyes employed from season to season, or else i 'so supporting the same at a minimumv cost, in a` a ,fresh-supply had to be-purchased, all of which was both-expensive and inconvenient.

"It 1s the object of my invention to provide a fastener for securing awnings, curtains and -the like which overcomes all of the above disadvantages and whereby awnings can be fastened or detached from the frame work minimum time and with minimum effort.

Other objects of my invention will be more apparent from the following description and i the annexed drawings.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in'practlce to give satisfactory and reliable although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention-is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as vherein shown and described.

The spring arms or limbs may have their ends rounded as at 5 so as yto form the throat 6 which merges at its lower end into the enlarged opening 7, which merges into the slot 9, a portion of which is between the lower portion of the vertical limbs 3 and 4, from which said slot extends into the eye 8 in the body 2. f

By the above construction, a light and eiiicient fastener is produced, which can be manually grasped and manipulated by the body 2 as a handle and as the walls of the throat 6' are rounded above andbelow its narrowest portion, the device isreadilyapplied and removed. l v,

In using my novel fastener, the screws are driven, permanently into the wooden frame or jamb 11 to which it is desired to secure the awning, and the metallic'. eyelet or grommet 12, usually provided on the hem 13 of the awning 28 is passed over the head .14 of the screw. The fastener 1 is then grasped or manipulated by the body portion 2,'and the upper rounded edges of the-throat 6 of the^ resilient limbs 3 and 4 are pressed upwardly against the screw whereupon said limbs s?- arate slightly and the fastener slides into t position seen in Figures 1 and 4 and the shank of the screw becomes seated in the rounded opening 7, which is too smallto nermit the heads 14 of said screws to pass therethrough, thus maintaining the awning in position. When it is desired to remove the awning, it is merely necessary to pull the fastener 1 downwardly or in the reverse direction, to Egrmit the shank or stem'lof the screws 10 to disengaged from the rounded opening 7 and to pass'b the throat 6 whereupon the eyelet 12 on t e hem '13' of the awning 14 is slipped over or pulled outwardly from the hea 14 of the screw 10. Y

The openings 8 and 9 inthe bod portion of my novel fastener provide lig tness of structure and afford` added resilienc to the limbs 3 and 4, as will be apparent. c e foregoing structure may be easily and cheaply stam ed or pressed out of sheet metal.

- In igure 5, I have shown a modified form of my invention, wherein I illustrate the use of wire for making my novel fastener, in lieu t lof sheet metal or the like. In this construction, which is very light and inexpensive to make, the body portion is formed of the integral wire frame composed of the members 15, 16 and 17 whichl in conjunction with the disposed to form the inwardl deected portions 18 form a substantial y rectangular frame or body serving as a handle whereby the device may be manipulated. The portions 18 form a narrow slot 19 and then are deflected outwardly 'to form the limbs 20 and 21 which form the rounded opening or 'seat 22 for the reception of the stern 10 o the 'fastening screw, the upper terminals of said arms 20 and 21 being deected inwardly towards each other to form the throat 23 corresponding to the lthroat 6 through which the stem 10 'of the fastening screw is adapted to be passed in the manner above described. The extreme ends of the arms 20 and 21 are bent or otherwise efyes 25, which present rounded edges or sur aces to facilitate the manipulation of the device, as already ex-` plained. y

This construction possesses extreme light ness and resiliency and is inexpensive te man-l ufacture.

By-my invention I thus eliminate the nemem cessity of`unscrewing or removing the fastening screws from the frame or jamb 11, when the awning is takendown and replacin them when the awning is again eliminating a Vgreat deal of aber heretofore necessary and eliminatin alldama e to the wood workI which woul nri y result by repeated Mdrivingof-screws or the like thereinto. j t

' Furthermore, when an awnin lhas been removed, the fastening devices o my lnovel invention can be instantly'snapped back into position on the fastening screws to remain there readyfor use in the succeeding season.

It will thus .be apparent that I ave de` vised a novel awning fastener, which is highly eicient in use, and which effects great economy in time, labor and material, since 'the Isame can be manufactured by la single stamping or punching operation, andsince it can be applied or removed by singleA movement in one direction- While `I have described my novel fastener as applied to securin an awning in place, it is to be understood t at the same is ually applicable withslight or no variation, o the fastening of curtains, and the like, and wherever it is desired to secure an object temporarily and detachably to a ermanent suportl,l along the general lines ereinabove set ort I am aware that the invention ma be embodied in-other speciicfforms wit out /departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereo .and I therefore desire the present embodiment tobe considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference ut up, t ereby A being had to the appended claims rather than I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-A ters Patent, is
