FAN GUARD Filed Dec. 11', 1929 INVENTOR 0/20/16 7'. HmC/Q A TTORNE Y8 Patented 'June 17, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
CHARLES 'I. HATCH, OF ALBION, MICHIGAN, AS$IGNOR TO UNION STEEL PRODUCTS COMPANY, OF ALBION, MICHIGAN FAN GUARD Original application filed September 15, 1928, Serial-N0. 306,263. Divided and this application filed December 11, 1929.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a fan guard which is very economical in its parts, is light in weight and at the same time is strong and rigid.
Objects relating to details and economies of my invention will appear from the. description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claim.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a front View of my improved fan guard.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the center disk as formed prior to assembly with the guard Wires.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is an enlarged fragmentary view partially in section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a section through the center disk on line 55 of Fig. 2. v
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, my improved fan guard comprises a rim 1, a plurality of radially disposed guard wires 2 which are bent, largely for the sake of appearance, and a center disk 8 to which the inner ends of the guard wires are secured. This center disk is formed as a sheet metal stamping, a plurality of radial ribs 4 being struck up therefrom providing radial grooves 5. The grooves 5 are of such size as toreceive the ends of the guard wires which are welded therein, the wires prior to the welding operation contacting only with the bottoms of the grooves, thereby insuring an effective welding when the current is applied and uniform Welding of all the guard Wires as is described and claimed in myapplication for Letters Patent, Serial No. 306,263, filed September 15, 1928 of which this application is a division.
The center disks have notches 6 at the ends of the grooves forming segmental portions 7 between these notches, these segmental portions being turned inwardly providing supporting flanges 8 for the guard wires and also giving the appearance of weight or thickness to the center disk. The guard wires are thus very efi'ectively supported and secured to the Serial No. 413,190. 7
center disk and the structure is strong and rigid and at the same time attractive in appearance- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A fan guard comprising a rim, radially disposed guard wires extending inwardly from said rim, and a center disk having radial ribs struck up therefrom providing radial grooves in which the inner ends of said guard wires are disposed and secured by welding, said center disk having peripheral notches at the outer ends of the grooves, the segments of the periphery between the notches being turned bet-ween and constituting supports for theguard wires.
