' rl`his invention relates to internal combustion engines and refers more particularly to `the sleeve valve type yof engine. While the cylinder head is `ordinarily jacketed for lcooling water,Y the amount of available jacketing is limited due tospark 10 plug location and general arrangement of parts. As `a result the sleeve jacket tends to become overheated resulting in carbon accumulation and general inefficient operation of the engine.`
One of the objects of my invention resides `in providing means for overcoming the above objectionable characteristics. To this end I have provided improved means associated with the cylinder head and `cylinder `20 head cover for causing a -positive circulation of cooling water for cooling the cylinder liead,fsleeve pocket, and spark plug.
I have provided a member preferably in `the nature of a simple sheet metal stamping l `25 associated with thecylinder head and cover for guiding the water in the desired circulating path. One feature of my invention resides ina construction which will not require division of the cylinderhead jacket by i 3o partitions, thus simplifying the casting operations and reducing the manufacturing lcost.
Further features and advantages of my invention reside in the simplicity of the parts,

In 'the drawings reference character 10 represents one or more engine cylinders with associated sleeve valve 12, the latter foriillustratien being shown as the Burt-Mc- Collum single sleeve valve type in which the sleeve is moved in a combined reciprocating and oscillating path with respect to the sleeve axis in moving the sleeve ports 13 to function with the cylinder ports 1st.
The cylinder is closed at the top by a cylinder head 15 Which maybe formed with walls 16 and 17. The wall 16 .together `with the `associated cylinder forms a valve pocket 17 a accommodating the movement of the upper portion of the sleeve valve 12. The wall 17 is spaced from the wall 16 to formthe cylinder head cooling water jacket 18 and also defines the combustion chamber 19. The wall 17 may be extended to provide a barrel 20 with the spark plug opening 21` for spark plug 11. The cylinder head `15 may be secured to thecylinder by studs 22 `at the corners vof the cylinder head flange 23.
The cooling water from acket 2a is open for communication with the cylinder head jacket 18 through opening 25 preferably mainly along one side only of thecylinder head as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. For guiding the water from opening V25 I have provided a member 26 preferably formed of a sheet metal stamping. The member 26 may be formed with wall 27 spaced from the side'of the cylinder head adjacent the opening 255 side walls 28, and top wall 29. The water in moving across the cylinder head is caused to circulate downwardly into the jacket 18 by reason ofthe. baliies 81 preferably formed integrally with the main body rlhe top wall 29 is formed with a semi-circular or recessed portion 32 engageable with the barrel 2O prefer'- ably below the sealing structure or ring 33. sealing ring 33 in position as shown in the drawings.
The members 2G may be conveniently seated on the'tops of the cylinders l() intermediate the cylinder heads 15 and cover 35. The baiiles 3l preferably are located between the plane of the cylinder axesand the side oic the engine having the water openings 25. By such an arrangement the water is de- Hected downwardly into the cylinder .head jacket 18 insuring adequate and improved cooling particularly for the spark plug ll at the opening 21. In some instances I may provide the barrel ring liange 30 with the .strengthening webs 38 above and outside of the cylinder head jacket 1S, these webs to a slight degree preventing passage of water across and above the cylinder head jacket. rlhe baliles 3l deiiect practically all of the water into the jacket and if desired the webs 38 may be dispensed with.
The cooling water may he circulated throughout the entire system by the usual water pump (not shown), the water being returned to the usual radiator by a header 37 on the outlet side of bailies 3l.
My invention is obviously equally well adapted for use with various types of sleeve valve engines such as multiple or single sleeves having various movements.
What l claim as my invention is:
l. An internal combustion engine of the sleeve valve type comprising in combination, a plurality of water jacketed cylinders, a water jacketed cylinder head forming a sleeve pocket with each cylinder and provided'with a barrel portion, a cylinder head cover through which said barrel extends, a sealing ring between the barrel and cylinder head cover, and a member intermediate the cylinder head cover and cylinder head constructed to form a water deflecting passage in conjunction with the cylinder head jacket and provided with a downwardly extended baille positioned to one side of the plane of the cylinder axes for directing water from the cylinder jacket to flow generally down* wardly into and across the cylinder head.
2. An internal combustion engine of the sleeve valve type comprising in combination, a water jacketed cylinder, a water jacketed cylinder head forming a sleeve pocket with the cylinder and provided with arbarrel portion, a cylinder head cover through which Said barrel extends, a sealing ring between the barrel and cylinderhead cover, and a member intermediate the cylinder head cover and cylinder head having a recessed portion embracing the barrel and being constructed to form a water deflecting passage in conjunction with the cylinder head jacket for directing water from the cylinder jacket to flow generally downwardly into and across the cylinder, said member having a downwardly extending battle positioned tol one side of a plane longitudinally of the engine and containing the cylinder axis.

An internal combustion engine of the sleeve valve type comprising a cylinder, a cylinder head having a water jacket portion depending into said cylinder and an upstanding barrel portion', a cylinder head cover, a member within the cover, said member and barrel having cooperating means above the cylinder head jacket for directing cooling water into the cylinder head jacket.
4. An internal combustion engine of the sleeve valve type comprising a cylinder, a cylinder head having a water acket portion depending into said cylinder and an upstanding barrel portion, said barrel having a web vprojecting outwardly therefrom above the cylinder head jacket, a cylinder head cover, a member within the cover, said member having a baile cooperating with the barrel web for directing cooling water into the cylinder head jacket.
5. An internal combustion engine of the sleeve Valve type comprising in combination, a water jacketed cylinder, a water jacketed cylinder head forming a sleeve pocket with the cylinder and provided with a barrel portion, a cylinder head cover through which said barrel extends, a sealing ring between the barrel and cylinder head cover, and a sheet metal member intermediate the cylinder head cover and cylinder head having a recessed portion embracing the barrel and being' constructed to form a water deflecting vpassage in conjunction with the cylinder vhead jacket for directing water from the cylinder jacket to flow generally downwardly into and across the cylinder head, said barrel having a lateral deflecting projection above the cylinder head jacket cooperating with the said member.

An internal combustion engine of the sleeve valve type comprising a cylinder, a cylinder head having a water jacket portion depending into said cylinder and an upstanding barrel portion, s aid barrel having a sealing ring supporting flange and a web therebelow, a cylinder head cover, a member within the cover cooperating with the cylinder head and barrel web for directing cooling water into the cylinder head jacket, and a sealing ring between the barrel and cylinder head cover' supported by said barrel flange. 7. A sleeve valve engine comprising a cylinder, a cylinder head, a cylinder head cover, a member within the cover, said member and cylinder head having cooperating deflectors located above the cylinder head jacket for guiding cooling water into the cylinder head.

A sleeve valve enginel comprising a cylinder, a cylinder head, a cylinder head cover, a member within the cover, said cylinder head and member having cooperating deiiectors for guiding cooling Water into the cylinder head, said delectors being positioned to one side of the plane longitudinally of the engine through the cylinder axis of said members and engageable With the other c preventing displacement of the second member from the Water flow. y
9. A sleeve valve engine comprising a cylinder, a cylinder head, a cylinder head cover, a member Within the cover having a Water deflecting baille positioned to oneside of the plane longitudinally of the engine through the cylinder axis for'guiding cooling Water into the cylinder head.
10. A sleeve valve engine comprising a cylinder, a cylinder head, a cylinder head cover, a member Within the cover having a Y baille positioned to one side of a plane longitudinally of the engine through the cylinder axis for 'guiding cooling Water into the cylinder head, said member having a recessed portion engageable with the cylinder head.
11. A Vsleeve valve engine comprising a cylinder, a cylinder head having a Water jacket portion depending Within the cylinder and an upstanding barrel portion, a cylinder head cover, a member Within the cover having spaced baies positioned to one side of a plane longitudinally of the engine through Y the cylinder axis, said barrel having spaced projections cooperating With said baffles and located above the cylinder head Water jacket.

A sleeve valve engine comprising a cylinder, a cylinder head having a Water jacket portion depending Within the cylinder and an upstanding barrel portion, a cylinder head cover, a member Within the cover having spaced battles positioned to one side of a plane longitudinally of the engine through the cylinder aXis, said barrel having spaced projections cooperating With said baffles and located above the cylinder head Water jacket, said projections lying in a plane containing the said bales.
13. A sleeve valve engine comprising a cylinder, a cylinder head having a Water jacket portion depending Within the cylinder and an upstanding barrel portion, a cylinder head cover, a member Within the cover having spaced battles positioned to one side of a plane longitudinally of the engine through the cylinder aXis, said barrel having spaced projections cooperating With said baffles and located above the cylinder head Water jacket, said projections lying in a plane containing the said baies substantially parallel with the first said plane.
14. In a sleeve valve engine, a cylinder head, a cylinder head cover, a member Within the cover' having a Water deflecting baiiie, and a second baiile separate from said member but cooperating therewith to deflect Water into the cylinder head, said bailles being positioned to one side of' the plane longi- ARCHIE MACPHAIL NIVEN.
