REFRIGERATION Filed March 25, 1927 Charles C. S reen Inventor Aito i neus A particularly to providin Patented 17, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE CHARLES C. SPREEN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO KELVINATOB: CORPORA- TION, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN Application filed March 25, 1927. Serial No. 178,484.
. My inventionrelates to refrigeration, and
means for simplifying the attaching o the ends of the service pipes to the-refrigerant expansion tank in mechanical refrigerating systems, and the principal object of my invention is to provide new and improved means of this type. ing this specification and forming a part of this application I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which my invention may assume, and in these drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of this embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is aside elevation of an expander tank having. my improved connection, while Figures 3 and 1 are sections on the lines 3-3 and H of Figure 1, respectively.
The embodiment of my invention herein disclosed comprises a refrigerant expansion tank 11 of the usual float valve type designed to be placed in the refrigerating come partment 12 of a mechanical refrigerator cabinet 13, having looped refrigerant expansion tubes 14: depending therefrom, and having a face plate 15 carrying the valve mechanism (not shown) for controlling the How of refrigerant through the service pipes 16 and 17.
In order to simplify the connecting of the service pipes 16 and 17 to the face plate 15 I have provided the face plate 15 with a pair of outwardly projecting ribs'18 and 19 which extend laterally beyond the confines of the tank 11 to form a lateral extension 20. The ribs 18 and 19 are provided with ducts 21 and 22 which, extend inwardly fromthe edge face of the lateral extension 20 and communicate with the service ports of the tank'll; Angle shut-off valves 23 and 2& having ends 25 and ,Zti alined with the service pipes 16 and 17, and adapted to be connected to the service pipes 16 and 17 by connectionsv27 and 28, are attached to, the edge face of the projection 20 by bolts 29 in a'manner to provlde a passageway for refrigerant between the service pipes 16 and 17 and the expansion tank 11.
From the above disclosure it will be ob In the drawings accompany vious to those skilledin the art that I have which obviatesthe necessity of bending the ends of such pipes.
At the same time it also to those skilled in the art that the embodiment of my invention herein shown and described may be variously ;cha ed and modified without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing the'advanta'ges thereof, and it therefore will be understood that the disclosure herein is illustrative only, and that my invention is not limited thereto.
I claim:
1.- In a mechanical refrigerating system: a refrigerant expansion tank, as of the float type, having aface plate provided with, a service port; a service pipe extending longi tudinally of said tank alongside said tank; and means for operativel connecting said service pipe to said face p ate'without bending said service pipe comprising duct means having a portion integral with said face plate, communicating with said service port and projecting outwardly beyond the lateral confines of said tank, and a portion attached to said outwardly projecting portion,
disposed at an angle to said outwardly projecting portion and alined with said service pipe; and means for connecting said service pipe to said alined outer end.
2. In a mechanical refrigerating system: a refrigerantexpansion tank, as o the float will be obvious type, having a face plate provided with a I plate, communicating with said service port and projecting outwardly beyond the lateral confines of said tank, and a portion including an angle valve, connected to said out wardly projecting portion, and having its outer end alined with said service pipe; and
means for connecting saieLservice pipe to said outer end of said angle valve.
3. In a mechanical refrigerating system, a
refrigerant expansion tank ada ted to contain liquid refrigerant, said tan havingan opening 1n one end, a face plate secured to close the open end of said tank, an' extension formed integral with said face late, the free end of said extension exten mg in a plane beyond the lateral confines of said tank, said face plate and extension having a duct extending therethrough, and' a refrigerant conducting pipe connected with the free end of said extension.
4. In an expansion device for mechanical refrigerating system, a refrigerant ex ansion tank adapted to contain liquid re rigerant, said tank having an opening in one end thereof, a detachable face plate secured to close the opening inthe end of said tank and an extension formed integral with sai face plate and extending" in a plane beyondthe lateral confines of said tank, said face plate and said extension having service duct extending therethrou h. i
In testimony whereof I ereunto afiix my signature. J
