Description

June 17, 1930. H-. A. STONE "1,764,423
APPARATUS F012 COATING. ARTICLES Filed Sept, 10. 1925 ghveutoz Patented June 17, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HENRY A. STONE, or BOGoTA, NEW JERSEY APPARATUS FOR COATING ARTICLES Application filed September 10, 1925. Serial No. 55,583.
My invention is directed broadly to an apparatus for coating objects and specifically to an apparatus for coating objects,
such as paper plates and the like, these ob-,
jects being formed from large rolls of paper as the same is received from the paper mill.
' made are-formed, whereby any variation in thickness of the paper is automatically compensated for, thereby enabling the paper, once started through the mechanism, to .be coated evenly throughout the remainder of its entire length and breadth. This .pro-' vides a mechanism whereby a thorough even coating of the paper or other material is assured, uncoated spots or zones in the paper due to unevenness in the thickness of p the paper being avoided. As a result, by
the use of this improved mechanism all of I the paper in'theroll except, of course, the short strip which is first fed through the machine in settingup the machine, can be utilized in the making of the articles being produced.
p In the accompanying drawing my improved device has been shown in plan and perspective. Referring to the drawing, my improved device comprises a bed or table 5 over which the paper is passed, this bed carrying a pair of brackets 6 and 7 at the rear thereof, to
each of which brackets is pivoted an armor lever 8 extending to and slightly beyond the forward end of the table 5. Carried by these arms 8 is an open-bottomed tank or reservoir 9 for the coating material, the opening in the bottom thereof having been designated 10. This tank, as will be seen from the drawing, lies immediately above the paper to be coated, and extends transversel of the paper, so that the coating material contained within the tank and which, for example, may be cellulose acetate dissolved in acetone, will be applied to the paper as the same passes beneath the tank.
At the forward end of each ofthe arms 8 I attach springs 11, the tension of which may be adjusted, if desired, these springs being provided for the purpose of holding the tank 9 in adjusted position. Immediately below the open bottom 10 of the coating-tank- I provide a resilient cushion or pad 12, a cushion of sponge rubber being well adapted for use in this connection, the face'of this cushion lying above the face of the table. As the paper 2 is pulled through j the machine and passes under the tank 9 between the bottom thereof and the cushion 12, it receives its coating material, and
any inequalities in the paper, that is to say,
any variations in the thickness thereof, are 1 automatically compensated for by the cushion 12 and to some extent by the resilient 5 mounting of the arms 8 carrying the coating tank.
It will be seen from the foregoing that I have provideda' machine adapted for the manufacture of paper plates, forexample, or other articles in which a roll of paper as it comes from the mill is first of all treated so asto coat the same with a grease-proof and water-proof coating, means being provided whereby this coating may be applied uniformly to the paper.-
I wish it to be understood also that changes maybe made in'the details of con struction and arrangement of parts hereln illustrated and described within the purview of this invention.
What I claim is:
In an apparatus for coating material, the combination of a pivotally mounted tank or reservoir, said tank being provided with an opening in the bottom thereof for the dlscharge of eoating material therefrom, a resilient cushion below the opening in said tank, and means for yieldingly holding said tank in adjusted position on its pivot.
This specification signed this 5th day of September, 1925.
