The lower arm 19 is rigidly secured at its rear end to a rock-shaft 20, which in turn is pivoted to the main frame 17 by screws 21, while its forward endis fastened to the shift-frame by pivots 22. The upper guidearm 18 correspondingly is pivoted at its rear end to the main frame, and forwardlypivotally engaged to the shift-frame by means of the novel adjusting device 23, which, it should be noted, is placed upon a part of the shiftframe readily accessible in,
standard constructions.
A shouldered-screw 24 may serve as a pivot for the guidearms 18 and be threaded eccentrically into a disk 25 mainly constituting the adjusting device, and which in turn is fastened to the arm 14 of the shift 8 frame-structure, preferably by screws 26 I passing through arcuate slots 27 concentrically provided in said disk. When it is desired to adjust the shift-frame, the screws are loosened up and the disk rotated, and,
due to the guide-arms 18 being carried eccentrically, a rotation of the disk will tend to move the carriage towards or away from the printing point. The shift-frame is thus given a tilting movement about pivots 22,
and the two extreme positions hereby rc'leached are indicated in Figure 3 in dot-andash.
After the screws 26 are tightened up again, the disk 25 may further be locked in place by suitable devices, such as notches 28 circumferentially provided on the disk, and a pin 29 to fit the notches and which is rigidly secured to the shift-frame. This notch arrangement obviously will also aid inifine adjustment, andv the diameter of the disks and the size and pitch of the notches may be formed accordingly to give a measure for the extent of rotation relatively to the shift-frame.
In 'lligure4i's shown a modification of the adjusting device. A bracket'30 is movably fastened to the shift-frame by screws 31 passing through straight slots 32 provided in the bracket, so that by loosening up the screws, the frame maybe adjusted to bring the carriage towards or away from the printing point. After the adjustment is made, the screws are tightened up again to secure the bracket in place.
To actuate the case-shift mechanism, as described above, for writing upper casecharacters, a key-operated lever- 33, Figure 2, fulcrurned at 34 in connection with the main frame, is provided with an extension 35 to co-operate with an inwardly-projecting pin 36, secured to the shift-frame and shown to be integral with the pivots 22 (see Figure 1). Upon depression of the lever 33, the extension 35 will cam upwardly pin 36, imparting motion to the shift-frame, which 1s limited for upper and lower case-positions by stop-screws 37 and link guided, as described above, whereby said stop-screws adjustably threaded into ears 38 struck up from the main frame 17 and locked in place by lock-nuts 39, are to serve as abutments for an extension 40 provided on the righthand lower guide-arm 19. When the operating pressure is released, the shift-frame will gravitate downwardly to rest its weight upon the lower stop-screw 37, while the case shift-lever 33 swings back to its initial position where it is held, while ineffective, by a spring 41, which causes an car 42, provided upon the extension 35, to bear against the edge 43 of an opening provided in the side Wall of the main frame. v
A means to guide the shift-frame 8 against undue lateral movement is shown in Figure 5. At the right-hand side, the shift-frame is held by a rigid stop formed with a shouldered screw 44, threaded into the mainframe and equally used as a pivot for the right hand upper guide-arm 18, while the left hand side of the shift-frame is-taken care of by an adjustable stop, including a tapped and collared hub 45, jointly to'be used as a pivot for the left hand upper guide-arm 18 and also a loclcnut cooperative with a lock-nut 46, to provide a stop-screw 47 adjustable relatively to the main frame into which it is threaded, and relatively to the shift-frame, which it is to guide.
