This invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularly to line-counters therefor.
Typewritor-operators and stenographers are often paid according to the number of lines typed. For this purpose there is used a counter. It was found that the counter could be made to over-register by operating idly a link connecting the counter 19 to the typewriter-mechanism, or by merely depressing the carriage-release key and mov ing the typewriter-carriage back and forth.
One of the objects of the present invention is to overcome these objections. For
this purpose, the counter with its operating lever is suitably enclosed in a casing to prevent unauthorized accessibility thereto, and the unit is mounted at the back of the machine. The casing isprovided with a narrow opening to permit a driver on the carriage to pass therethrough and engage the lever.
Another feature of the invention resides 0, in the provision of means for automatically shifting the driver to an ineffective position when the carriage-release key is depressed, thus preventing the counter from being operated when the carriage is moved by hand. To accomplish this, the release-key lever is provided with a rearwardly-extending arm, which, upon depression of said key, rocks a bell-crank pivoted to a bracket on the carriage-frame to shift the driver above the q counter-operating lever and cause the same to pass idly over said lever during the handmovement of the carriage.
Still another feature resides in the simplicity of the invention, enabling the cheap manufacture thereof. The counter and its associated mechanism may readily e attached to any standard Underwood typewriter without necessitating any material changes to the machine.

A typewriting machine includes types 10 to be swung up to strike a platen 11- rotatabiy mounted on a shaft 12 carried by the end plates 13 of a platen-frame 14. The platen may be rotated for feeding a worksheet 15 either by a knob 16 fastened on the shaft 12, or by the regular line-spacing mechanism 17, operated through a fingerpiece 18. The platen-frame 14 is mounted on a carriage-frame 14*, supported for letter-space movement on front and rear rails 19, carried by the stationary main frame 20. Escapement mechanism for feeding the carriage includes an escapement wheel 21, carrying a pinion 22 meshing with a rack 23 on the carriage 14, the latter being urged in letter-space direction by the usual strap 24 on the spring-drum 25.
For counting the number of lines typed during the day, or in doing a certain work, a line-counter 26 is mounted on a bracket 27 carried by the arms 28 attached at 29 to the machine-frame 20. The counter is positioned at the center and in rear of the machine, and is of the standard Veeder construction, which includes an enclosing casing or. housing 26, covering dial wheels 30, each of which carries a tooth-wheel 31. wheels are rotated through a pawl 32 mounted on a swingable arm 33 fixed to a shaft 34. This mechanism is limited in itsswinging movement by a pair of stops 35. The shaft 34 extends to the outside of the casing 26, at which end an operating lever or arm 36 is rigidly mounted. In order that this lever may only be operated by letter-space travel of the carriage, it is suitably enclosed by means of a housing 3'7, attached; to the These bracket 27 by screws 38. Said housing is provided with a narrow slot 39, so that a driver in the form of a camming bar 40, carried by a bracket l2 on car'iage-frame ll, may enter said housing 37 at a predetermined position during the letter feeding movement of the carriage to actuate the counter. The bar 40 is therefore provided at its forward end with a camming edge 43, to engage a roller ist of the actuating arm 36 to cam the latter down, as shown in Figure l, and thereby rotate the shaft 3% in a clock wise direction, thus tripping the counteractuating mechanism, against the tension of a restoring spring 45. This mechanism is held by the bar 10 in its tripped position during further travel of the carriage in the letter-feeding direction. After the line is typed, the carriage is returned in the usual manner causing the bar 40 to ride free of the roller 1%. The spring sh) then rotates the tripped mechanism of the counter in counterclockwise direction which movement actuates the counting wheel 30 to register the line typed, and simultaneously restore said mechanismto its normal position.
The bar 40 may be of any desired length according to the amount of typing that it is desired to be done prior to the tripping of the counter-actuating mechanism. In the present invention the bar shown as being approximately half the length of a typed line, so that the counter will not be tripped during the typing of the first half of the line, and therefore any typing done of less than half a line will not be counted.
The carriage may be readily moved back or forth to any desired position, for making an erasure or for the beginning of a paragraph, by disengaging rack 23 from the pinion 22. his is accomplished through the usual carriage-release-key 46 pivoted to the carriage-frame at 47, and carrying at its end the rack 23. To prevent the bar 40 from actuating the counter when the carriage is so moved, the carriage-release-key 46 is provided with an extension 48, rigidly attached by screws 49. The end 50 of said extension lies under an arm 51 of a bell-crank 52 pivotally mounted at 53 on the bracket 42. The other arm 5% of the bell-crank 52 terminates in a forked portion straddling projecting roller .36 on an upwardly extended portion 57 of the bar 40. It can readily be seen that when the carriage-release-key 1-6 is operated the extension 48 rocks the bell-crank 52 to act on the roller 56 to move the bar d0. This bar when moved is guided upwardly by means of guiding slots 58, through which screws 41 project. The bar is thus raised to a position above the roller 44 of the counteroperating-arm 36, and is therefore ineffective to operate the counter when the carriage-release-key is depressed for moving the carriage by hand. A returning spring 59 is fixed atone end to an inward extension. 60 of the bar 40, and at the other end to a pin 61 on the bracket d2. By this means the bell-crank 52 and the bar l0 are returned and held in their normal positions. The usual restoring spring 62 returns and holds the carriage-release-key s16, together with its extension 48, in normal position.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvei'nents may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a typewriting machine including a frame, a carriage and a counter mounted on said frame, an operating lever attached to said counter, a housing for said lever, and means on the carriage to enter said housing during letter-space movement of the carriage for operating said counter.
2. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a carriage, a frame, a counter mounted on said frame, an actuating arm on said counter, a casing for enclosing said arm and having an opening, and a camming bar on said carriage in the path of said opening for entering said casing and actuating said arm during the feeding of said carriage.
8. The combination with a typewriting machine having a main frame, a carriage, feeding mechanism therefor including a rack on the carriage normally in mesh with a driving pinion, and a carriage release key for disengaging said rack and pinion for moving the carriage by hand, of a linecounter, an enclosed operating lever fixed to said counter, actuating means for said operating lever mounted on the carriage, and means fixed to said carriage release key to move said actuating means to an ineffective position when said release key is operated.

The combination with a typewriting machine having a main frame, a carriage, mechanism for feeding said carria e in letter-space movement, and means for disengaging said feeding mechanism for moving he carriage by hand, of a counter fixed to said main frame, an operating lever for said counter, and means on the carriage to actuate said lever for operating the counter when the carriage is moved by said carriage feeding mechanism, said last mentioned means being automatically shifted to an ineffective position when said feeding mecha nism is disengaged.
5. The combination with a tpyewriting machine including a main frame and a carriage, of a register mounted on said frame for indicating the lines typed, an operating arm fixed to said register, a housing for enclosing said arm, said housing having an opening, and a camming member on the carriage to enter said housing to actuate said arm at a predetermined position of the typing line, said member holding said arm in its actuated position during the completion of said typing line.
6. The combination with a typewriting machine including a stationary frame, and a movable carriage, of a register carrying an operating arm, a housing for enclosing said arm to prevent unauthentic operation thereof, the whole being mounted on a bracket to form a unit, said unit being attached to the stationary frame of the typewriting machine, and means fixed to the movable carriage for entering said housing to actuate said register-operating arm during the movement of the carriage.
7. The combination with a typewriting machine having a stationary frame, a carriage, letter feeding mechanism for said carriage, and a release key for disengaging said mechanism to move the carriage by hand, of a counter carried by said stationary frame and having its mechanism enclosed in a casing, an operating lever at the outside of said casing, and a protecting housing for said lever provided with a narrow opening therein to permit means on said carriage to enter said housing and actuate the counter mechanism during the feeding of the carriage by said letter feeding mechanism.
8. The combination with a typewriting machine having a stationary frame, a carriage, letter feeding mechanism for said can riage, and a release key for disengaging said mechanism to move the carriage by hand, of a counter carried by said stationary frame and having its mechanism enclosed in a casing, an operating lever at the outside of said casing, a protecting housing for said lever provided with a narrow opening therein to permit means on said carriage to enter said housing and actuate the counter mechanism during the feeding of the car riage by said letter-feeding mechanism, said means including a bar held in the path of the lever by a bracket on the carriagc-frame 9. 10. The combination with atypewriting machine having astationary frame, a carriage, letter feeding mechanism for said carriage, and a release key for disengaging said mechanism to movethe carriage by hand, of a counter carried by said stationary frame and having its mechanism enclosed in a casing, an operating lever at the outside of said casing, and a protecting housing for said lever provided with a narrow openingtherein to permit means on said carriage to enter said housing and actuate the counter mechanism during the feeding of the carriage by said letter feeding mechanism, said means being automatically moved to an ineffective position upon operation of said carriage release key.
11. The combination with a typewriting machine having a stationary frame, a carriage, letter feeding mechanism for said carriage, and a release key for disengaging said mechanism to move the carriage by hand, of a line-counter mountedon said stationary frame, means on the carriage to operate said counter during its letter feeding, and an extension of said carriage. release key effective upon depression of said keyv to rock a bell-crank having one arm connected to said counter operating means for moving the latter to ineffective position.
12. The combination with a typewriting machine having a stationary frame, a carriage, and letter feedingimechanism for said carriage, of a line-counter having an operating lever, and a protecting housing, for enclosing said lever, said casing and housing being mounted on a bracket fixed to the stationary frame, said housing having an opening, and a driver on the carriage and movable therewith, said driver passing through said opening and actuating said lever when the carriage is fed by said'letter feeding mechanism.
13. The combination with a typewriting machine having a stationary frame, a car riage, letter feeding mechanism for said carriage, and a release key for disengaging said mechanism to move the carriage by hand, of a line-counter having an operating lever, a protecting housing for enclosing said lever, said'line-counted and housing being mounted on a bracket fixed to the stationary frame, said housing having an opening, a driver on the carriage and movable therewith, said driver passing through said opening and actuating said lever when the carriage is fed by said'letter feeding mecha nism, and means for automatically moving said actuating driver above saidlever upon depression of the carriage release key.
14. The combination with a typewriting machine having a stationary frame, carriage, letter feeding mechanism for said can riage, and a release key for disengaging said mechanism to move the carriage by hand, of a line-counter having an operating lever, a protecting housing for enclosing said lever, said counter and housing being mounted on a bracket fixed to the stationary frame, said housing having an opening, a driver on the carriage and movable therewith, said driver passing through said opening and actuating said lever when the carriage is fed by said letter feeding mechanism, and means for automatically moving said actuating driver above said lever upon depression of the carriage release key, said means including abell-crank having one arm provided with a forked portion straddling a projection on said actuating driver and an extension on said release key operable, upon depression of said key, to rock said bell-crank and move said actuating driver to ineffective position.

The combination with a typewriting machine having a stationary frame, a carriage, letter feeding mechanism for said carriage, and a release key "for disengaging said mechanism to move the carriage by hand, of a line-counter having an operating lever, a protecting housing for enclosing said lever, said counter and housing being mounted on a bracket fixed to the stationary frame, an opening in said housing, a driver on the ca 'riage and movable therewith, said driver passing through said opening and actuating said lever when the carriage is fed by said letter feeding mechanism, and means for automatically moving said driver above said lever upon depression of the carriage release key, said driver being mounted on a bracket fixed to the carriage and provided with guiding slots to determine its direction of motion during its movement to eil ective or ineffective position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a letter feeding carriage, or a line-counter, said carriage having means for operating said line-counter at each cycle of carriage movement, a release-key for said carriage, and means operated by said releasekey for disabling said line-counting means.
