Description

June 17, 1930. I. GLUCKSMAN 5 MEANS FOR POSITIONING THE LEFT ELBOW OF A PUPIL WITH RELATION TO THE VIOLIN Filed Aug. 26, 1929 FIG;
IN V EN TOR.
A TTORNEYS.
Patented June 17, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE MEANS FOR POSITIONING THE LEFT ELBO \V OF A P'UPIL WITH RELATION TO THE VIOLIN Application filed August 26, 1929.
My invention relates to means for positioning the left elbow of a violin pupil with relation to the violin.
The objects of my invention are to produce a device of the class described which will be new, novel and of utility; which will keep the players left elbow under and to the right side edge of the violin; which will in the shortest time teach a pupil the 0 correct position of the elbow below and to the right of the violin; which will correct a player having learned without my device, a faulty habit; which will assist the pupil and player to correctly use his hand. and the tips of the fin ers on the strings; which will render the shifting from one position to another to be done easily and with smoothness; which will prevent the thumb curving around the finger board; which will assist to the thumb to lie under the neck of the violin to give counter pressure to the fingers for producing from the violin a sonorous tone, and better tone results; which will assist the ends of the fingers of the left hand to fall upon the strings with hammer-dike effect instead of at an angle; which will assist in properly holding the violin for bowing with the right hand.
WVith these and other objects in view as will more fully appear, my invention consists in the construction, novel features, and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims hereto appended, and illustrated in the accompanying one-sheet drawing, of which,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view elbow positioner;
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the positioner attached to the middle bout of the violin held by a player; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the positioner showing the method of clamping the device to the violin.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in all the figures.
It is understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, shape, weight and other details of construction, within the scope of my invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or bread of my Serial No. 388,605.
principle of my invention and without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof; and it is also understood that the drawings are to be interpreted as being illustrative and not restrictive.
A practical embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the drawings includes the manner of bringing about the purpose for which my positioner is intended is accomplished by a preferred embodiment as fol lows:
I provide a rod 1, of metal or other suitable material of such length as to extend from the instrument played to a point be low the elbow of the pupil or player. This may be short or long, owing to the length of the arm of the user. I prefer to have the lower end of this rod rounded, a ball, 2. This is not claimed a part of the principle of the invention, but is intended for the convenience of picking the same up from the table and preventing the end of the rod from scratching furniture or the like. The end of the rod opposite from said rounded end has a long threaded portion 3.
A thumb screw l is adapted to be used on said rod on said threaded portion 8 thereof. The outer end of said threaded portion has at right angles thereto, a small portion 5 beneath which is located and attached there-- a to a felt portion 6 to prevent the scratching of the violin when attached thereto. Intermediate said thumb screw and said portion at right angles to said rod is a round perforated button 7 the perforation not being threaded and being of sufficient size to readily move up and down on said threaded portion. On the top of said button and attached thereto is a felt or padded portion 8 adapted to be used on the back of said instrument and to prevent the same from being scratched.
- In operation, the padded or felt portion 6 of right angle portion 5 of said device is placed on top of the rightside edge 9 of the faced portion 10 of the instr. at and the felt or padded portion 8 button 7 is placed beneath the right side 11 of the back 12 of said instrument. These are preferably attached adjacent the middle bout of of sai the violinbut nia be )laeed in .l
able positions. The thumb screi placed against the lower portion I outton 7 and screwed itiv there, et, right edge of the violin with the main stem i of said rod depending therebelow. The said rod 1 is placed to the left 13 of said left elbow l l and the bass of the violin 15 is placed beneath the chin of tie pupil. The lingering or left hand 16 is placed on the neck 17 of the violin and the lingers 18 of the performer or pupil are in a position to be dropped direct downwardly on the strings of the violin.
Obviously, the invention is susce )tible of embodiment in forms other than tl t which is illustrated in the accompanying dr: rings and described herein, and applicable for uses and purposes other than detailed, and I therefore consider as my own all such niodiiications and adaptations and other uses of the form of the device other than as herein described as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
l. A device of the character described C0111- prising a longitudinal rod having a threaded portion adjacent its upper end, and a rightangled portion at said end having its lower surface cushioned, a button around said rod with a cushion surface on its upper side, a thumb-nut around said rod adapted to hold said cushioned surfaces securely against one edge of a violin, or viola, with said rod extending below said instrument.
2. A device of the character comprising a longitudinal rod, having a right angled portion at its upper end, the nether surface of said right angle portion being padded, a helically threaded portion on said rod adjacent and below said rightangled portion, a round button around said rod, said button adapted to freely move up and down on said threaded portion, and having a pad upon its upper face, said padded surface being adapted to respectively fitabove and below the edge of a violin, or viola, a thumb-nut on said rod below said button adapted to securely clamp said button and said right angled portion to said instrument, and to hold the rod rigidly in position therebelow.
3. A device, as described, embodying a longitudinal rod having an upper laterally extended flattened end portion and having a threaded portion adjacent and below said end portion, a pad fastened to the lower fac of said laterally extended portion, a round button loosely and slidably surrounding said threaded portion having a pad fastened on its upper face, said button and said laterally extending portion adapted to contact a violin described,
in playing position on its right side edge with their padded sides, said bu l adapted to be adjustably positioned on said rod by suitable holding means on said threaded poi tion, said rod adapted for extending beneath said violin on the left side of the left elbow of a player.
i. A device, as described, embodying a longitudinal rod having an upper laterally extended flattened end portion and a ball on its other end, and having a threaded portion adjacent and below said upper end portion, a pad fastened to the lower face of said laterally extended portion, a round button loosely and slidably surrounding said threaded portion having a pad fastened on its upper face, said button and said laterally extending portion adapted to contact a violin in playing position on its right side edge with their padded sides, said button adapted to be adjustably posi r ned on said rod by a winged nut on said threaded portion, said rod adapted for extending beneath said violin on the left side of the left elbow of aplayer, for correctly positioning his arm while playing.
