This invention relates to wrapping machines for c lindrical rolls and more particularly to mac ines adapted to wra news print and other rolls of considerab e size and weight and our object is to devise a machine for wrapping rolls of difierent dimensions equally well and which will fold the wrapper ends more neatly than is now possible by manual methods.
We attain our objects by providing a machine having side frames movable, on idewa s, towards or away from one anot er to adgust the machine for news print rolls of various lengths. Between the s de frames of the machine at one end thereof is located a transverse guide on which acarrlage is mounted. Behind the carriage are gournalled a pair of carrier rollers which carry and rotate the roll during the wrapping thereof. The paper roll is carried by a conveyor from a aper machine to the carriage and is aimed,
side frames, while it is passinover the carria e to the carrier rollers. T ese centering devices engage the ends of the roll and, 1f the latter is out of alinement, they will ush the roll and thus the carriage in either irectlon transversely of the machine toaccurately aline the roll. I
The mode of wrap ing the rpll is as follows: Firstly, an insi e header 1s applied to and held against each end of the roll second- 1y, a body wrapper is ssetted and wound round the roll between t e latter and the carrier rollers; thirdly, the overhanging ends of the'wrapper are folded in to cover the inside header and the tail end of the body wrapper is provided with glue; fourthly, band wra ers are wra ed round the bod wrapper d d lued the gto, these bands being also gussetted and folded in over the already folded-in ends of the body wrapper; and fifthly, outside headers are glued to the folded-in ends of the band wrappers.

These bands are gummed in any suitable manner so that the portions of the bands wrapped round the b0 y wrapper are lued thereto. When a predetermined ength of each band wrapper has been fed from band wrapper su ply rolls the latter are automatically stop e and .the band wrappers are cut ofi. then dropped to permit the wrapped roll to run down a -runway leading to a conveyer located betwen the rear side frames of the machine. The stopping mechanism for the band wrappers also causes the outside header feeding mechanism to be started. On the rear side frames are carried the outside header magazines, gluing means, and endless belts. The headers are glued to the foldedin ends of the band wrappers and the endless belts appl pressure to the headers while they are rying. The wrapped roll as it leaves the drop roller causes the return of the header plates to their inclined positions. The roll while passing over the runway is automatically centered relative to the outside header applying means.
he carrier running between the endless belts conveys the wrapped roll to a scale where it is weighed and suitably stamped to show its weight, etc., according to standard practice. From this point it may be carried y another conveyor to a point for shipment.-

Projecting slightly above the upper surface of the carriage 3 (see Fig. l) is an anti-friction roller 11 carried on a trip arm 11 which is guided in the frame 4 and which is adapt- 2d ed to be depressed, for a urpose hereinafter described, by the roll as it rolls over the inclined carriage towards the carrier rollers a and a which are journalled on standards 12. When the roller is again rotated the pro ect1on moves away from the headers and permits the follower c to present a fresh header to the feed roller.
The feed rollers are secured to shafts 17 arranged longitudinally of the machine and ournalled on the side frames 1" at opposite sides of the machine. The forward end of each of these shafts has a bevel gear secured thereto and these ears mesh with bevel gears 71. which are feather ke ed on a transverse shaft 5* which is journa led on the forward ends of the op osite side frames 1. The gears i are provi ed with hubs having. grooves therein adaptedto receive forked arms a, These arms are secured to the opposite side frames and are adapted to maintain the gears of each set in mesh with one another when the side frames are moved relative to one another to wrap rolls of diderent lengths. See Fig. 2.
The rotation of the transverse shaft 5* is controlled by means by an automatic clutch a ofeny automatic type adapted to form a drive connection at least for one revolution each time its trip lever is actuated. A well known form of this type of clutch is shown n Figs. 24: and 23 in which a cam'13 havmg a number of cam or inclined surfaces is keyed to the shaft e'". the cam is disposed a ring 14: having a plurality of slots containmg rollers 15 adapted to he received in a counterbore formed in a drivin member 19 which is journalled on the said shaft. A'

The lever may be provided w1th a spring 20 which tends to old it in engagement withthe lug. The sprocket 19 is constantly rotated as hereinafter described and is clutched with the shaft to drive it when the lever 17 is rocked to disengage the lug 18. When the clutch is thrown The inside headers z are carried at opposite into operation the parts thereof and the shaft rotate with the sprocket until the lever 17 is moved into the path of the lug and again engages it.

The cutting table 23 includesthree T-section members spaced apart to form two iongitudinal slots for the passage ofithe Wrasper, the members being secured together a acent their ends. The cutting table 23 and trough B are secured by supports 24 to the opposite sides of the frame 1 and are carried below the upper cross members 1 so that the side frames 1 may be moved to and from one another while the cutting table remains stationary. To limit the inward travel of the bars fi when they are positioned over one another, we pivot the wedge bars on the side frames} and provide cams B* for engagement with the inclined or wedge shaped ends of the wedge bars whereby they-are thrown out of engagement with their projections B. When the side frames are moved awa from one another the wedge bars slide a ong their cams and re-engage the projections to slide the bars B outwardly to increase the number of fingers in o eration. It will be noted that the centra 1y located finger is much wider than the width of the outer fingers so that the bars B, when moved to their outer positions, will lie behind the outer fingers and the ends of the wide finger whereby all the fingers will be rocked by the eccentric rods.

The free end of each band wrapper is passed between a set of feed rollers b which are similar to the feed rollers B hereinbefore described. The rollers of each set are geared to ether and one of them is provided with V- aped punches 5, while the other has complementary notches for gussetting the bands to form flaps or tongues along the edges thereof. These flaps are similar to the flaps or tongues on the body wrapper and are creased by the are shaped creasers b so that they will fold neatly over the ends of the body wrapper and lie against the flaps or tongues thereof. The cuttings from the gusset cutters B and b are forced out of the notches by ejector plates 85 which form movable bottoms for the notches, see Figs. 25 and 2. The plates are provided with inwardly extending pins 86 aving heads on their inner ends. Shafts 87 journalled in one of the feed rollers B and b of each set are provided with a rectangular cross sectional portion 87" adapted to engage the pins and actuate the plates on each quarter revolution of the shafts. Each shaft is provided with a four toothed ratchet wheel 88 the teeth of which are adapted to be engaged seriatim b a finger 89 carried on a stationary art 0 the machine to 've the ratchet w eel a quarter turn and t us actuate the ejector plates. The cuttings are dischar ed through openings in the supports B and b into chutes 95 for carrying them away from the machine.

When the nut engages the bell crank a, the clutch c is thrown in to rotate the cam shaft a for one revolution. To disengage the nut from the shaft and to rock the lever a into engagement with the latch on the bell crank it, we provide the bell crank a with an arm a adapted when the bell crank a is rocked by the nut to en age the end of the lever that is remote from t e weight. The nut is provided with a cord and a weight a for returning it to its initial position which is determined by an adjustable stop a. A sprin pressed plunger 20 returns the trip lever 1. and the bell crank a to their operative positions.-
The rotation of the cam shaft and thus the cams a lowers the carrier roller a to discharge the roll from the carrier rollers and then raises the carrier roller a to its normal position for co-operation with the roller (2 to receive a fresh news print roll.
The constantly rotating roller a, clutch sprockets 19, 19 and 19, pulleys 19* and 19, and gear 19 are driven as follows. The shaft of a motor is connected by gearing 61 with the shaft a on which theroller a is carried, see Figs. 4, 2 and 3. The gear 19 of the clutch 0" on the cam shaft a is driven by a train of,gears 62, from the shaft a and this shaft is also provided with. two sprockets, one of which drives a chain 63 meshed with the sprocket 19 of the clutch o. The other sprocket drives a chain 64 meshed with both sprockets 19 and 19 which are journalled on the feed roller shafts l3 and b. On the motor shaft is secured a pulley for driving a belt 66 which passes round the pulleys 19 and 19 that are journalled on the eccentric shafts-B and b respectively.
The inclined outside header magazines 0 are carried on a frame 0 that is secured in any suitable manner to the forward side frames 1*, see Figs. 1, 2, 3, 10 to 13. Each ma azine is provided with a feed roller 0 wh1ch 18 secured toa shaft 0. The feed roll= ers o are each adapted to feed one outside header 0 from its ma azine during one revolution of the feed r0 er. To prevent more than one header from being engaged by a feed roller during its revolution, the circumference of the roller is slightl greater than the diameter of the header an the overlap thus fprmed on the roller is filled by a projectlon 0. This projection is adapted to en a hinged flap 0 on the magazine to hol t e stack of headers therein out of'engagement with the feed roller. On the next revolution of the latter the projection moves out of engagement with the flap and permits a follower 0 to present a fresh header to the feed roller. Each roller 0 is adapted to feed a header between a constantl rotating drum 0 and a platen. The drum as an annular gumming pad 0 carried on the periphery thereof. The shaft 0" of this drum and the shaft 0 are journalled on the frame 0. The in pad 0 is adapted to apiply a ring sha e' and of glue to the hea er and is supp icd with lue by a roller o running in a glue trough 0". This trough is carried on arms 0 pivoted on the frame 0 Springs 0 maintain a yielding frictional contact between the gumming pad and the roller 0 whereby thelatter is driven to feed an even supply of gum to the pad. The header is carried down etween suitable endless tapes 0 and two sets of rollers 0 into a guideway 0 The upper roller for carrying the tapes is driven by a belt 0 from the shaft 0 and the rollers 0" are so carried that they maintain a yielding frictional contact with the tapes, as for example by pivoting the rollers on the .upper ends of suitably fulcrumed levers 0 to the other ends of which the springs 0 are secured. The -uideway 0 is formed with an open side ad% with a channel shaped side 0 for guiding the edge of the header that is remote from the endless belt. The sides of the header are supported between uide members 0 and connecting rods 0 or carrying a vertically movable carrier 0 on which the header rests. The connecting rods are pivotally connected with a crank arm 0 that is rocked by one of a pair of parallel arms a. The latter are connected by a bar 0 adapted to be engaged by the periphery of the news print roll B as it is carried, by the conveyor 51, past the magazine. The purpose of this carrier mechanism is to automatically adjust the carrier so that the same sized headersma beused with rolls of different diameters an the center of the header will be positioned substantially in alinement with the horizontal center line of; the roll passing beneath the bar a The outside headers are each moved laterally past the open side of the guideway, by means of an ejector a", into the nip between acent the endless belt 7 0 and engage an arm of a bell crank o" to rock the latter and thus a lever '0" connected therewith. The lever is connected with the ejector o and is provided with a springer a weight for returning these arts to them normal positions. As the bel crank is located close to the underside of the roll, the distance betwen the point of contact of these parts and the vertical center line of the roll will be substantially the same for rolls having different diameters. The headers are thus e'ected to position their centers in substantial a 'nement with the center of various sized rolls.
The outside header feed roller shafts o are controlled by clutches c which may be similar to the clutch c and which include constantly rotating sprockets 19 and trip levers 17 These clutches are operated by the eccentrics b from a crank arm 0 formed on or operated by the bell crank a". The arm '0" is connected by a rod 0 with a crank on a transverse rocker shaft 0 This shaft is held in any suitable manner from axial movement and is journalled in bearings 0 carried by the guideway sides 0 These bearings carry grooved hubs feather keyed on the transverse shaft and provided with crank arms 0. The latter are connected byrods 0.," with the trip levers 17. When the side I frames 1 with their outside header mechanisms are moved away from or towards one another, the arms 0 are slmultaneously moved along the shaft 0 On the side frames 1" are journalled flanged drums 71 and spring pressed rollers 72 round which the endless belts pass. The lower ends of these belts are positioned slightly above the conveyor 51 to permit the belts to apply pressure to the outside headers of short news print rolls. The conveyor and belts are driven at the same speed. The journals of the rear drums 71 are driven, by sets of worm gearing 74, from a'shaft 73 which may be driven from any suitable source of power such as a motor 84.- that drives the conveyor 51. The shaft 73 is journalled on the rear side frames 1 and the worms are feather keyed thereon so that they may be shifted longitudinally of the shaft when the side frames are moved transversely of the machine. v
The side frames 1 and 1" on opposite sides of the machine are adjustable to and from each other by shafts 76 journalled in the guideways 1 and provided with threads for engagement with nuts carried by the 'side shaft 78 is ada ted to be driven by frames. The threaded shafts are simultaneously operated by worm gearing from a shaft 77 which extends centrally of the machine. A a belt 79 from any suita ly located shaft't at is constantly driven such as the shaft a and is ada ated, by means of a well known reverse mec anism that is controlled by a manually operable clutch 80, to drive the shaft 77 in either direction of rotation. To ensure the roll being centered relative to the outside header applying mechanism, we provide the runway 50 with anti-friction rollers adapted to run on transverse guides 50 so that it will readily and easily run transversely of the machine when it is carrying a roll R. If the roll is shifted slightly out of alinement when it is being discharged from the carrier rollers a and a one ofits ends will engage the adjacent inwardly directed wall 53 to cause the roll and runway to be shifted transversely of the machine as the roll passes by the by over the runway. The portions of the walls 53 which extend rearwardly of the runwa are substantiall parallel to maintain the ro l in alinement with the center line of the ma-' chine. On the guide is pivoted a weighted .pendulum 50 having a pin and slot connection with the runway. The pendulum is similar to the pendulum 5 hereinbefore described and is adapted to position the runway in aline- I lies the preceding fiapbut the free end of the flap beyond the slit overlies the preceding flap as shown in Fig. 26. In other words the slit permits one edge of the outer and innerportions of a flap to straddle the adjacent edgelof the preceding flap. The slits are formed in the flaps by lateral extensions B and 11" formed on the punches B and b respectively. The notches for receiving the laterare shaped to receive and to 00-0 erate with the extensions so that the material cut out to form the flaps and slits is integral and is adapted to be removed by the ejector plates 85 from the notches, as hereinbefore described. The free or outer ends of the fla s are directed or bent outwardly relative to t e base or inner portions thereof by a wedge block 32 carried on the plate 71'. The wedge blocks are located above the slots 32 and are inclined downwardly and laterally to prevent the flaps from being torn as their free ends ride over the blocks.
Any slack in the wrappers as they are being wound on the roll R is taken up by the tapes 38, 37, and 38 which are driven at a slightly greater speed than the peripheral speed of the roll Lt. One of the rollers journalled on the pressure mm section 33 is provided with a pulley which is driven by a narrow belt from a pulley journalled on the pivot 40. @n the last pulley is carried a second belt which passes round a pulley 96 on the shaft 42. This pulley 96 may be driven from any suitable shaft such as the shaft 7) which drives the gum roller 1) The gum on the outside headers 0 and the wrappers ii and b is dry by the time the roll ll reaches the end of the pressure belts. .ln some cases it may be desirable to provide short belts and to ensure the gum being set before the roll reaches the end of the short presser belts, we provide any suitable means for heating the belts. This may be done'by forming the spring pressed rollers 72 and the drums 71 as cylinders into which may be passed steam or heated air whereby the belt will be heated by contact with the heated cylinders. The lower journals of the rollers and drums are tubular for suitable connection with steam or hot air piping 97. The conveyor 51 then discharges the roll on to a scale platform 82 where it has its weight and other indicia stamped on. The roll is now ready for shipping and is passed on to a loading conveyor 83 that may be driven by chains 90 from the adjacent shaft of theconveyor 51.
Made of operation Assuming the side frames have been adjusted to suit the length of the news print roll to be wrapped and the slides 13 and'b have been adjusted to obtain the desired lengths of the wrappers, the mode ofoperation is as follows. As the roll passes on to the carriage 3 it engages the centering devices 6 which ensure the roll being alined and as it rolls over the carriage towards the carrier rollers a and a it depresses the trip arm 11 to start the inside header feeding rollers i and the body wrapper feeding and gusseting rollers B mm otion. The roll R then engages the outer sections 35 of the pressure arms to swing the said arms upwardly on their pivots 42 which causes the rods 46, 48 and the' levers 47 to swing the outer ends of the sections 35 downwardly into engagement with-the periphery of the roll. The plates 91" are swung inwardly by the shafts a" at the end of their revolution to hold the inside headers a ainst the ends of the roll R and to move the folding devices 32 to their operative positions for folding in the flaps on the wrappers. While the main function of these flaps is to protect the endsof the roll R, the flaps also serve to keep the main portion. of the wrapper in engagement with the periphery of the roll during the wra ping of the roll. With the feeding of the b0 y wra per the nut B is startet in motion towar s the tripping mechanism for actuating the cocentric shaft B which stops the feeding rollers 13 causes the wrapper to be gummed ands cut andstarts the band wrapper feeding rollers b. As the band Wrappers are'bcing fed, the nut 5 moves towards its tripping mechanism and when this is reached the eccentric shaft 7) is revolved once to stop the feed rollers, cut the band wrappers, start the mechanism for operating the cams a and start the outside header feeding rollers 0*. These cams lower the carrier roller a which permits the tilting of the table 54 to discharge the roll 1% therefrom; The wrapper guide arms 27 are then swung upwardly by the roll and on their return movement rock the inside header plates 2' to their positions for receiving fresh headers. As the roll passes over the runway 50 it is again alined. The outside headers are gummed and positioned on the carriers 0 during the lowering of the carrier roller a.
The roll R runs on to the conveyor 51 and raises the bars 0 which elevate the carriers and thus the headers to aline their horizontal center lines with the horizontal center line of the roll. The latter then engages the bell cranks 0 to eject the headers from the carriers into the nips formed by the ends of the roll and the adjacent pressure belts 70. The
headers are thus frietionally gripped between the belts and the roll ends and are drawn from their carriers and carried between these parts until the um is set. The roll is then wei hed and 1a lled ready for shipping.
