This invention relates to metal working machines of the power actuated type.
This invention has utility when incorporated in boring machines of the horizontal type.

There is, accordingly, provided a three- 1925. Serial No. 32,666.
Mounted on the base 1 is motor 11 having shaft 12 (Fig. 9), connected by coupling 13 with shaft 14 in intermediate section 2. Bearings 15 mount this shaft 14 which, remote from its connection with the shaft 12, has pinion 16 in mesh with gear 17 on shaft 18 mounted by bearings 19 in this intermediate section 12 parallel with the shaft 14. Cover plate 20 may be readily removed by removal of bolts 21 so that mounting bolts 22 may permit interchange or substitution between the gears 16. 17, forvarying the relative rate of rotation of the driven shaft 18 as to the driving shaft 14. This shaft 18 in the intermediate or driving section 2 is provided with bevel gear 23 in mesh with bevel gears 24, 25, (Figs. 2, 12). The bevel gear 24 is mounted on shaft 26 carried by bearings 27 as spaced by sleeve 28 anchored by set screw 29 in bracket 30 in opening 31 in intermediate section 2 and protruding therethrough to be connected by bolts 32 with the terminal section 6. This shaft 26 remote from the bevel gear 24 carries pinion 33. Shaft 26 carrying the pinion 33 protrudes from one side of this section 2 toward the section 6.

As overhanging the table 8 of intermediate section 2, this shaft-10 carries a desired tool,-as cutter 43, anchored in adjusted. position by set screw 44. Accordingly, this tool is given its rotative driving action by a train of gearing from the intermediate section 2. Likewise in the section 7, the bevel gear 25 is efiective in driving the pinion in mesh with gear 45, similar to the gear 38, effective through long pinion 46, similar to the pinion 39, for driving gear 47 fast on the rotary holder or spindle 9 opposing and herein shown as in axial alignment with the shaft 10.
The pinion 33 (Figs. 8, 13), besides being in mesh with the gear 38 is also in mesh with pinion 48 on shaft 49 mounted in bearings 50, 51, in the section 6 and extending parallel to the shaft 26. This shaft 49, remote from the pinion 48, carries pinion 52 (Figs. 4, 13) in mesh with gear 53 on stub shaft 54 carrying pinion 55 in mesh with gear 56 in a speed reductiontrain. This gear 56 is mounted on shaft 57 carrying opinion 58 in mesh with gear 59. This speed reduction gear trainis disposed in housing 60 having removable cover plate 61 permitting interchange or substitution of the gears 58, 59, for varying the speed ratio between the driving shaft 49 and the driven shaft 62 on which the gear 59 is mounted. This 82" may shaft 62 extends parallel to the shaft 49 and carries worm 63 in mesh with worm wheel 64 (Figs. 6, 12, 14) on shaft 65 mounted in the sect-ion 6. Set screws 79, 80, are adjustable oppositely to engage this lug 78 and thereby vary the angular position of this crank 73in matters of refinement of adjustment as to the actuator 76. This actuator 76 carries pin 81 from which extends a pair of tension springs 82 downward in the housing or section 6, thereby tending to pull the crank arm 73 upward for yieldably holding the roller against the cam 67. Supplemental tension spring extend from arm 69 or in lieu of the springs 82.
This actuator 76 has its arc grouping 'of This collar 86 is so disposed that there is no freedom or longitudinal movement of the sleeve 84 as to the shaft 10, which sleeve 84 as so held by the collar 86 is in position I against thrust bearing 87 as abutting hub 88 of the gear 40.
Accordingly, in the speed reduction driving train from the pinion 33 by way of the pinion 48 on the shaft 49, there is a feed mechanism effective through the cam 67 for rocking the actpator 76 and thereby thrusting, at a determined rate, the shaft 10 axially from the section 6 over the table 8 as in progressing such holder into the work, or as to the Work being performed. In the event the Work is carried by the holder or shaft 10 and the tools are stationary or held by the table 8, there is this relative travel operation. As the feed distance is determined, the roller 70 rides off the cam 67 and the springs 82, 82 or either thereof, effect an immedate recovery away from over the table 8 so that as the driving of the machine continues the repetition of this reciprocation or feed drive may occur with maintenance of rotation of the shaft 10. In this feeding of the shaft 10 axially, the rotative drive is maintained due to the travel of the gear 40 along the long pinion 39. For effecting the adjustments of the actuator 76 and gearing for this feed drive, door 89 may be opened.
In the second terminal section, the rotative drive, as herein disclosed, is directly from the powersupply of the intermediate section 2. However, in the instance wherein independent adjustment of the speed reduction ratio is not desired, there may be direct driving of the worm, wheel, cam, link, crank and actuator for effecting the reciprocation of the spindle 9. The adjustments are such that the sequence of the reciprocation may be identical or differing from the reciprocations of the rotary holder 10. -To effect this rotation or drive of the feeding mechanism of the section 7 from the section 6, there is connection (Figs. 5, 13) from the shaft 64 by coupling 90 to shaft 64'.
In the operation of the device of this disclosure, the operator may depress push-button 91 .(Figs. 1, 11), thereby connecting power current from power supply line 92 by line 93 and line 94 to switch throwing solenoid 95, effective for having its circuit ,com-
pleted by line 96, switch 97, line 98, and
As the shaft 65 determines the cycle of operations in the rotation of the cam 67, one rotation of this shaft 65 is a complete cycle of operations of the machine. Accordingly, on this shaft 65 (Figs. 10, 11, 13) there is. mounted bar 101, which in the" rotation of the shaft 65 is disposed to come in contact with projection 102 carried by lever 103 having fixed bearing 104;. This bar 101, accordingly, lifts this lever 103 against the resistance of spring 105, and thereby opens switch 97 de-energizing the solenoid 95 so that spring 106 opens the switch 107 thereby cutting out the power supply to the motor To re-start the motor 11 after the work has been shifted or replaced, it is only necessary to again depress the starting button or switch 91. In the event there 1s occasion during a cycle of operation for discontinuing the running of the machine, it is only necessary for the operator of the machine to depress button 108, thereby breaking current from the switch 107 by line 109 as bypassing switch 91. When the switch 91 is depressed to start the motor, it is held only momentarily, and as the switch 107 is closed and the-motor 11 is started, current may flow past such switch 107 by the line 109 bypassing this switch 91. The depression of the button 108 breaks this circuit from the switch 107 and thereby at once stops the motor 11. L
The installation as herein disclosed is one wherein there is great range of adaptation in the handling of work. The terminal sections may be interchangable and may be substitutive. The intermediate power. section may be substituted for wider or narrower sections; for difi'erent height of tables; and for different speed or character of power drive. The rotative gearing trains are independent as herein shown for the rotary holder carrying sections. The feed train as herein disclosed is one adaptable for variation in speed ratio, as well as nicety of adjustment as to the position axially of the rotary holders. The intermediate or power supply sections may be a complete machine when assembled with but one terminal section instead of two.
Upon extension ofshaft 64' crank 110 may be detachably mounted to permit manual setting or adjusting of the holder or holders.

each having a support independently of the other, connecting means assembling the sections in a row with the supports approiimating a common plane base region therefor,
