This invention relates to take-up devices for cable-carrying drums, and more particularly to certain improvements thereon enblin r a laxer uantity of. cable to be cars x ie. hy the? ati lm without materially increasing the size oi the device, providing a more positive automatic switch mechanism and simplifying the construction. j I
In the accompanying; drawings which show one embodiment of this invention 1 Figure 1 is. a, side view of the device partly iiiilsection, the coverflplatebeing removed. to show iinderlying parts. i I g 2:is a transverse sectional view taken on the"1ine 2'2 Fig. l.
a Fig. 3 is a similar view of a portion of the device'showing the positions ofparts of the automatic switch'mechanism after the, drum has been rotated to. unwind a] portion ofthe cable therefrom. i v I As shown in the accompanying drawings, the device of vthe fpresent invention comprises a casing 10 for a drum 11 on which is casing through a sleeve 13 secured in the wound a cable 12 which passes'out ofthe 1928. Serial No. 267,115.
In order to permit adjustment of the tension of the rewlndlng spring 25 Without a1- tering the position of the shaft 22 and from the exterior of the casing, the shafts 22 and 28 are structurally separate, although they are axially aligned, and are held in such alignment by a pin 29 on the shaft 28 entering a hole in the shaft 22. The shaft 28 has a shoulder adapted to'firmly' draw against the inside surface of the casing 10 by a nut 30 engaging the thre'adedend of the shaft, a friction Washer 31 being interposed between the nut 30 andtheoutside surface of the casing, a j 1 When it is desired to adjust the tension of a spring 25, the nut 80 is backed off the threaded end of the shaft and then the shaft is turned in the desired direction by a screw-driver, or other tool, beinginserted in a kerf 32 provided in the endof the shaft 28. After the shaft is properly adjusted, the nut 30 is again-tightened to look the shaft against all movement.
In order that as much as possible of the interior of the casing may be occupied by the drum so that a cable of greatest possible Oct. 21, 1930. c, JAMES 1,778,857
