My i vention relates to improvements in' valves, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a valve of the type adapted for internal com bustion engines which has novel means for" I- tile directing the exhaust gas away from valve head.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described by means of which the valve head is kept cool.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which prevents the warping of the valve and al o prevents leaking.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which is simple in construction, durable, and efiicient for the purpose intended.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a sectional View of the valve as applied to an internal combustion engine, a portion thereof being shown in section,
Figure 2 is a section along the line 22 of Figure 1 and Figure 3 is a side elevation of the valve.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a valve 1 having a valve head 2. A valve stem 3 is integral with the head portion 2 at the center thereof. An inner annular cooling flange 4 is integral with the head portion 2 and is disposed concentric with the valve stem 3. An outer annular cooling flange 5 is integral with the head portion 2 and is disposed concentric with the inner annular flange 4.
An annular recess 6 is disposed between the annular flange 4 and the valve stem 3. An annular recess 7 is disposed between the annular flanges 4: and 5. An annular flange 8 is provided in the head portion 2 concentric with the annular flange 5.
The flanges 4 and 5 are provided with transversely extending directing surfaces 9 and 10, respectively. The head portion 2 is provided with an arcuate-shaped directing surface 11 which tapers toward the surfaces 9 and 10 of the flanges 4 and 5.
From the foregoing description ofthe various parts of the device, the operation thereof will be readily understood. Let us assume that the valve 1 is disposed in an internal combustion engine 12 which has a combustion chamber 13, an exhaust port 14, and a valve seat 15. The free-end of the valve stem 3 may be operatively connected to the valve-actuating mechanism by any suitable means not shown.
The valve 1, when in its closed position, is in engagement with the valve seat 15. The valve is in this position when the gases of combustion are ignited in the combustion chamber 13. After the gases of combustion have been ignited, the valve 1 will be raised to that position shown in Figure 1.
While the valve is in its open position, the exhaust gas will be allowed to pass from the combustion chamber 13 into the exhaust port 14. As the gas passes into the exhaust port 14, the curvature of the portion 11 and the surfaces 9 and 10 keep the gas, which is extremely hot, away from the head portion 2 of the valve. In this manner the valve head 2 is prevented from becoming heated to the extreme temperature that the ordinary valves are heated, thus avoiding warping of the valve stem and valve head, and obviating the possibility of causing a leakage around the valve due to imperfect seating.
The annular recesses 6, 7, and 8 allow the annular flanges 4i and 5 to readily become cooled, and in this manner the head portion 2 is retained at a relatively cool degree of temperature. Even if carbon is formed in the recesses 6, 7 and 8, this will not prevent the efliciency of the formation of the head portion and the annular flanges as carbon will not retain heat.
I claim:
1. A device of the type described comprising a head portion, a valve stem carried by said head portion, and an annular flange disposed concentric with said valve stem and carried by said head portion, said annular flange providing a recess adjacent said valve stem and said head portion, said annular 5 flange having a transversely extending dii I vrecting surface.
2. A device of the type described comprising a head portion, a valve stem carried by said head portion, and a plurality of annular flanges carried by said head portion and disposed concentric With said valve stem, said annular flanges providing a plurality of annular recesses disposed concentric With said Valve stem, said flanges having transversely extending directing surfaces.
3. A device of the type described comprising a head portion, a valve stem carried by said head portion, and a plurality of annular flanges carried by said head portion and disposed concentric With said valve stem, said annular flanges providing a plurality of annular recesses disposed concentric with said valve stem, said flanges having transversely extending directing surfaces in substantial alignment and extending away from said Valve stem.
