R. sEwAlo Er m. 1,763,483 CONSTRUCTION )LEAT Filed July 16, 19 28 gmwtou 2/305112 Seward Mm B002 Patented June 10, 1930 CONSTRUCTION GLEAT Application filed July is, was Serial naeeaoea Our invention relates to a construction cleat adapted to be used for holding wooden members or the like which constitute a form about a structural steel beam for insulating and fire proofing the same; and it is an ob ject of the invention to provide a cleat of simple, inexpensive and durable construction which will eliminate wood nailing strips or the like and will simplify the construction as 39 well as reduce the cost and weight of the load carried; all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a vertical section illustrating the use of our construction cleat, and
Figure 2, a perspective.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates a structural steel I-beam which is desired to be provided with an insulating or fire proofing covering to give it the appearance of a substantially square beam. To the 2 I-beam 10 are attached a pair of spaced side members 11, which with the bottom member 12 co-operate to make up a hollow form for the reception of plastic material. Each of the members 11 and 12 is secured in spaced relation from, the I-beam 10 by means of stamped sheet metal construction cleats 13 which constitute the essence of our invention. Each construction cleat 13 is provided with an elongated tapered slot 14 adapted to fit tightly and snugly upon the flange of the I-beam. Such construction cleat is provided with a pair of flanges 15 and 16, the lower or horizontal flange 15 being disposed at right angles to the body of the cleat and being provided with a slot 17 for the reception of a bolt 18 by means of which the member 12 and its brace 21 are bolted thereto and therefore are supported by the L beam 10 and the flange 16 is disposed vertically at right angles to the body of the cleat and is provided with a recess 19 having a squared portion for the reception of the squared shank of a bolt 20 by means of which the side members 11 also may be secured to the I-beam 10.
If desired, of course, the horizontal flange and the vertical flange 16 may be disposed atthe same side of the body of the cleat 13.
With this construction the respective members are held firmly in fixed properly spaced relation, considerable weight is eliminated,
and warping or buckling to any appreciable extent is eliminated.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes ma be made in our device without departing from the spirit of the invention, and we, therefore, do not limit ourselves to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described (stream invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination of a supporting metal member having a laterally extending tapered flange, a transverse wooden member mounted in parallel relation to the flange, a second wooden member mounted at right anglesto the first, and means for securing said wooden members to said flange comprising a stamped sheet metal plate having an elongated tapered recess for receiving the flange and for engaging opposite sides of the same to form a tight fit, said plate having oppositely disposed flanges extending at right angles to the body of the plate and lying flat against the wooden members, and fastening means extending through said flanges and the wooden members and securing them firmly together, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a supporting member having a laterally extending tapered flange, a transverse member mounted in substantially parallel relation to said flange, a second transverse member mounted substantially at right angles to the first transverse member, means for securing said transverse members to said flange comprising a plate having an elongated tapered recess for receiving the flange and for engaging oaposite sides of the same to form a tight t, said plate having oppositely disposed flanges for engagement with the transverse members, and fastening means connecting said flanges and said transverse members and securing them firmly together, substantially as set forth.
3. A bracket for supporting a concrete form about an I-beam comprising a stamped sheet metal plate formed with three flanges lying in planes each at right angles to the other two, one flange having an elongated tapered recess for engaging the flange of the I-beam and the other flanges being perforated to receive means for securing the mold thereto, substantially as set forth.-
