Y., A CORPORATION 'OF DELA- WARE AIR-COOLED BRAKE RIM FOR ROTARY DRAW WORKS Application filed. November This invent-ion relates to air cooled brake rims for rotary drawworks and is more particularly related to a drawworks construction including a brake rim secured to the flange of the drum of the drawworks in a manner to provide air ducts for the passage of air from within thebrake rim radially around the brake rim and through said air ducts, and to the construction of the drum flange to provide means for forcing air through said ducts.
in the operation of rotary drawworks as employed for the purpose of drilling wells in accordance with the rotary method, a drawworks drum is employed upon which is reeled a line by means of which the drill stem or casing is supported. The load supported by this line is many tons and in lowering the pipe into the well, the lowering is controlled by means of brakes secured to the drum. The brake drums and bands mounted thereon become quite hot under the braking force required to control the lowering of such a load into the well.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a rotary drawworks including means for cooling the brake rims and consequently the brake bands mounted thereon.
Another object of this invention is to provide an air cooled brake drum for rotary draw'works including a spool having flanges at its opposed ends upon which flanges bralre rims are secured in a manner to provide air ducts between the flanges and brake rims,
and webs formed on the faces of the flanges for deflecting air through said ducts and radially around the brake rim.
Other objects and advantages of this invention, it is believed, will be apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred embodiment thereof, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a drawworks drum indicating a line as reeled thereon and showing a fragment of the drawWorks in which the drum is mounted along with one form of brake means as commonly provided for such drawworks drums.

In the preferred embodiment of this invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 1 and 2 indicate spaced posts upon which a drum shaft is journaled in bearings. Mounted on the drum shaft is a drawworlrs drum which includes a spool 3 having flanges tat its opposed ends and to which flan I; there is secured brake rims 5 in a manner which will hereinafter be particularly described.
Mounted on the brake rims 5' are lnuike bands 6 which may be of any suitable or de sirable construction as is well understood in the art, and means of any suitable or desirable form, such as are indicated at 7, are provided for actuating the brake bands in order to tighten the same on the brake rims 5.
The flanges t are constructed with a plurality of vanes 8 which are formed at spaced points around the faces thereof and are inclined at their rear edge away from the di rection of rotation of said flanges when unreeling the line which is reeled thereon. The arrow 9 indicates the direction of rotation of the flanges 4 during the unreeling of the line therefrom. The brake rims 5 are formed at their inner edges with inwardly extending annular flanges 10 by means of which the brake rims are secured to the flanges 4. Formed on the faces of the flanges at are circumferentially extending rims 11 against which theinner edges of the flanges 10 are fitted. The flanges 10 are secured to the flanges l by means of rivets 12. The circumferential rims 11 are cut away, as are the faces of the flanges 4, in order to provide air ducts 13 through which air from the interior of the brake rims 5, and which air is circulated within the brake rims 5 by vanes 8, is conducted outwardly to behind the brake bands 6 which are mounted upon the brake rims 5. The air being thus conducted out through the equally spaced ducts 13 to bebind the brake'bands 6 will aid in maintaining the brake bands 6 away from the brake rims 5 unless the brake bands 6 are tightened on the brake rims 5. The air passing through the ducts 13 forms an air cushion under the bands 6 and in this manner maintains the bands 6 away from the brake rims. The forcing of the air through the ducts will likewise aid the maintaining of the bands 6 cool. The ducts 13 are by this means positioned so that they do not in any way interfere with or diminish the braking surface of the brake rims 5.
Means are provided for securing the brake rims 5 to the flanges 4, which means preferably comprise a plurality of plate keys 14; which are interposed between the flanges 10 of the brake rims 5 and are mounted in bosses 15 formed on the flanges 1. The keys 1d are held in position by means of rivets 16.
Having fully described the preferred em bodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification Without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In an air cooled brake drum, the combination of a spool, flanges at the opposed ends thereof, brake rims secured to said flanges to provide air ducts between the flanges and brake rims, and webs formed on the faces and through said air ducts of said flanges for circulating air within the brake rims.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a spool having flanges at its opposed ends, brake rims secured to said flanges, air ducts formed between the flanges and brake rims, and means within the brake rims for deflecting air through said ducts.
3. In an air cooled drum, the combination of a spool, flanges at the opposed ends thereof, brake rims secured to said flanges to provide air ducts between the flanges and brake rims, and Webs formed on the faces of said flanges for deflecting air through said ducts, said webs being formed inclined away from the direction of rotation 01 said drum at their outer ends.
l. In an air cooled drum, the combination o l a spool, flanges at the opposed ends thereof, brake rims, air ducts formed between the brake rims and flanges, and inclined positioned webs formed on the faces of said flanges for deflecting air through said ducts.
