By the power transmitted through the system of gears, sleeve 13 is caused to rotate about the spindle 1, whereupon the rocker arm 16, roller 17, and crimping tool 21 will be revolved bodily about the axis of sleeve 13. Roller 17 will be acted-upon positively by cam 12 during a portion of the rotation which action through arm 16 will'bring the crimping tool 21 as close to die 24 as is necessary to establish their working relation for crimping in the flange on the cap and for expanding the vertical wall of the cap near its bottom. The proper spacing or working relation of crimping tool 21 and die 24 may be adjusted to suit working conditions by means of the adjustable eccentric mounting of roller 17 on the oflset portion of pin 18.
It will be observed that the cam 12 also rotates and in the same direction as the rocker arm 16 and sleeve 13 above mentioned, but
preferably at a slower rate of speed, although in some cases it may be rotated faster, due to the difference in the size of gears 10 and 12, cam 12 making only four revolutions while rocker arm 16 makes'five. Thus for every .five turns of the crank 6 a relative movement of one revolution between the arm 16 and cam 12*1takes place. By means of this differential gearing an automatic feature-is developed, that-is, by merelyrmaintaining the necessary pressure upon handle 2 and turning crank 6, the crimping tool 2 1 is brought into working co-operation with the die 24 and forcibly held in this position by the cam 12 acting upon roller 17 while the tool is being revolved about the fiangededge of the capso that the flange on the cap is positively crimped and the annular'portion of the vertical wall of the cap is expanded. Afterwar'ds by mere continuation of the turning of crank 6 the crimping tool 21 is automatically released by action of cam 12* and spring 20 to permit the removal of the tool and its application'to another cap. No extra manual means is required for rocking the crimping tool into and out of position. It will be understood that if the cam 12 is so formed as to rock the arm 16 against the action of the spring 20 during one-half of the relative movement of these parts, then during five turns of the crank 6 and five corresponding rotations of the arm 16, the tool 21 will be active for two and onehalf turns aboutthe cap, thus insuring the full crimping of the cap flange and'the full expanding of the cap wall. Obviously the gearratio and cam formation mentioned are suggested for purposes 'of illustration only and may be varied to suit the'conditions. A capping device comprising a cam mounted on a relatively fixed axis, a roller in constant contact therewith, an eccentrically adjustable mounting for the roller adapted to shiftthe axis of the roller,means for bodily swinging said carrier about the axis of the cam, and arotary driving element adapted to operate said carrier to shift the axis of the roller and to operate said swinging means.
