This inventionrelates toseals of that type in which there is a metal strap adapted to be 1 extended through the part. to be sealed and;
to have the ends of the strap permanentlyse- 5 cured together so that they cannot be separated without mutilation or the leaving of telltale evidence of tampering. 7
One object of my invention is to so construct the parts that the end portions of the 1G strap may be formed by a single stamping operation, and the ends of the strap secured together by a comparatively simple compressin-g action. I A furtherobject is to provide a construction in which all parts of the seal are co'n-:
, structed from a single piece of sheet metal,
' comparatively simple in design, and requir ing simple and inexpensive dies.
As one important feature of my invention 91; one end of the metal strap is-provlded with a pair of cups adapted to telescope one within the other, and the'opposite end of thestrap is provided with a head which will fit within these cups so that-When the sealing operation 521 is eii'ected the head is grippedwithin both of the cups and'the separation is thusrendered Fig. at is a perspective view similar to Fig."
3. but after the ends are permanently connected; and
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectionv on the line 5 of Fig. l, but upon a considerably larger cale. i
lnmy improved construction I employ a sheet metal strap having a body portion 10 of suitable width, length and thickness in accordance with the character of the device. in
connectionwith which the sealis to be employed. The metal is of such thickness and brittleness that it is readily broken if an at- I have il- 13. shown in Fig; '3. The two cups arethen gripped Within a suitable'compressing' device tempt be made to straighten it"afteronceit has 'beenbent to sealed position.
To facilitate the bendingiof the seal inter mediate of itsendsand to insure the proper 4 I positioning of the ends in respect to eachother, the body of the strap'is weakened, as
for instance, by means of a hole 11 leaving narrow bendable portions" 12 uponeac'h side thereof. The weakness resulting from the lioleresults' in the proper location of the bent. .t
At one end ofthestrap, there is provideda head portion 13 separated. from-the body of the strap a narrow neck-portion 14;. Preferab'ly the "head-is substantially circular, al though of course this is not of vital co-nee quence.
bending,' and the narrowing of the portions 12 increases the fragile character and: better 1 insures the breaking if aniattempt be made V to; straightenthe parts after theyarefonce At the oppositeend, the strap'is provided ries. The first cup 15hasa' bottoniwall and upstanding'edges and. is connected to" the body portion by'a neck 17; The Cup 16 is slightly-smaller and is connectedtothe cup with a pa-i r of cups 1 5- and 16 arrangedinse- -to'increas'e fragility and; locate the proper a pointof bending. The neck p0rtion18p'referably extends flush with the bottom Wallof (the cuplGand extends from the upper edge of the peripheral wall of the cup l5at la 'point diametrically-opposite to the neck 17.
'In theloperation of my improved device, the strap is passed through the staplei 'loop or other part of the apparatus to be sealed,
and isf then bentso that the head 13 comes withi'n the cup 15, as shown in Fig. 2; The
parts are so proportioned that if thefst-ral'a into the cup 15, as shown-in Fig; 2. The next step in the .oper'ationisto bend the-neck 90 be bent'at the hole 11 the'head 13 will come and sufficient pressure is brought to swage bending may bring the parts to the position 7 shown in Fig. 5 in which it will be noted that the side walls of the cup 16 slide underneath the head '18 so as to grip the latter, while the side walls of the cup 15 are bent in to lie on top of the cup 16. Any attempt to open the seal will thus necessitate the careful straightening up of the walls of the cup 15, 'difiicult removal of the connected cup 16 and head 13, and the separation of these parts.
As the edge walls of the cup 16 will come underneath the head 13, it will be difiicult, if not impossible, to get at these edges in such a way as to straighten them without breaking the seal, either at the neck 18, the'narrow portions 12, or the neck 17.
It will be noted that the entire strap may be made of a single stamping operation as both cups have their peripheral walls extending in the same direction, and the diameters of the cups are such that the strip of materialfrom which the seal is made is no wider than the body portion 10. g
By reason of the interlocking of the head 13 with the tWo cups when their flanges face in oppositedirections, and by reason of the narrow neck connecting the two cups, the. de-
vice is thoroughly tamper proof.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A seal comprising a strap of sheet metal, including a body portion, a substantially circular head at one end inthe plane of the body portion and connectedto the body portion by a narrow neck, a cup at the opposite end said cup having a bottom wall 7 in the plane of the body portion and corn .nected thereto by a narrow neck and having an upstanding peripheral wall, the internal diameter of said cup being greater than the 7 external diameter of said head, and the pcripheral wallof said cup beingbendable into 1 position above said head when the latter is placed within saidcup with said necks superposed;
i 2. A seal including astrap of sheet metal having a pair of cups at one end thereof, each having a bottom portion and an upstanding peripheral wall, a neck connecting'said cups and extending from the upper edge of the peripheral wall, of one cup to the bottom of the other cup, a neck connecting the bod} v portion to the bottom of the first mentioned cup, the diameter of the cups being such that one may be telescoped within. the other upon the bending of thefirstmentioned neck, and a head at the opposite end of said body portion and adapted to fit withinone of said cups.
