PETERSEN LIQUID PUMP GOVERNOR Filed Oct. 27, 1925 Patented .lune 10, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE The invention relates to governors, and particularly to those of the pressure regulated type and which are applicable to control a device such as a water pump, the regu- 5 lator being under the control of the pressure created by the pump.
It is one of the prime objects of the invention to simplify the structure of a device of the character' above referred to and to provide a device which is effective and cer tain in operation.
It is another object to provide a governor' which is hydraulically controlled.
It is a further object to provide a device of the character above referred to with means for varying the degree of pressure necessary to cause the operation of the device and also to permit a nicety of adjustment to be acoomplished.
It is a further object to combine a balance arm with a governor having the above characteristics, and to provide said balance arm with a chamber which the Huid to be regulated enters and from which it is discharged in accordance with the pressure or resistance offered to the `pump to thereby control the actuation of a valve which in turn controls a iiuid such as steam which actuates the pump.
In addition to the above it is an object to connect the balance arm directly with the stem of the valve and to provide a connection between these parts which will allow freedom or" motion between said parts and at all times maintain the alignment of the valve and valve stem.

T he balance arm 22 is pivoted to the support at 27 and is provided at one end With a weight 28, and has a ehambered member 29 mounted upon the opposite end thereof, and is connected intermediate its ends to the valve stem 18 through'the medium of the links BO-30, Which are respectively connected to the balance arm at 31 and' to the stem at 32, the last mentioned end of the links being attached to the cross member 33 secured to said stem. The coiled spring-23 and the adjusting' nut provided upon the valve stem provide a simpleand' convenienty means for controlling the pressure at which the valve is permitted to operate. rlhis spring is of an expansion type" and; will.v therefore, when. under compression, tend to assist the ehambered member in causing the operation of the valve, and also provides a means for allowingl the arm Which carries the chamber and the Weight torbeadj usted toward and away from its center of gravity. It is therefore manifest that the mechanism` is capable of adjustment so that it is operable to allov the opening of the valve upon a slight or great reduction of pressure or resistance, depending upon desire 0r necessity. lt is obvious that when the spring is under compression slight reduction= ofv pressure throughout the system' and inthe chamber Willv permit the operation of the valve, also thatl when the spring is entirely released of its compression that a greater resistance is offered to the Weight provided uponthe opposite end of the arm, which Will" necessarily require a greater reduction of pressure in the chamber before the operation of the device can take place.
As before stated, the balance arm is connected' With the links 30-30. To permit of this connection the balance'arm is provided Withthe lateral projections 34; Which are inserted`r inapertures provided in said links. Thefbal'ance arm is further provided Withthe elongated' opening` 35, through which the valve stem is passed. The opening all'ovvs thebalance'arm to move freely upon its pivot Vandeliminates the possibility of contact between'the valvestem andthe arm, which Will thus eliminatefany binding of the parts and consequent interference With the freedom of operation of the structure.
The ehambered member 29, Which is mounted adjacent one end of the balance arm 22, has a fiexible tubular member 36 extending therefrom, which may be connected to the Water discharge passage of the pump or the bottom of the tank into Which the Water is pumped by said pump. The tubular connection 36 will therefore provide a means whereby a pressure corresponding to the pressure existing in the tank or passage leading from the pump to the tank will be caused to eXist in the ehambered member carried by said arm, Which pressure Will vary in accordance with the pressure existing in the tank or passage leading from the pump to the tank the case may be, and Will therefore either cause the ehambered member to overbalance the Weight 28 and close the valve, or'permit the Weight to overbalance the chambered member and cause the valve to open. 1t is evident from an inspection of F ig. 1 that when the ehambered member is partially lled the Weight thereof will maintain the valve in closed position, in which condition it Willremain until the pressure recedes, after which the ehambered member Will be overcome by the Weight at the opposite end of the arm, raise the ehambered member and open said valve. v
My improved pump governor may be located or positioned Without reference to the water tank when the same is used in connection Wit i an air or steam tight tank but When the governor is used in connection with an open tank it must be located below the tank. From the above it will be noted that as the Water rises in the tank the air pressure in the ehambered member 29 is increased and when the Water in the tank reaches a predetermined level the pressure or Weight of the Water in the tankfforces some of the Water through the conduit 36 into the ehambered member 29. rlhus it will be readily understood that the pressure of the Water in forcing the Water into the ehambered member 29 is the element which controls the actuation of the governor.
F rom the foregoing explanation of the structure andoperation of the device it is evident that arsimple, effective and accurate structure is provided, Which maybe adjusted so as to control the degree of pressure necessary to cause the operation of the structure.
Having thus described my invention What I claim and desireto cover by Letters Patent is:
1. In a regulator, the combination of a valve casing, a valve having a stein, said valve beingy arranged in the casing and said stem being projected beyond the casing, a bracket secured to the casing, said stem being slidably held by said bracket, a. lever pivoted to the bracket, a link connecting said lever with the'valve stem, and gravity actuated pressure controlled means for controlling the operation of said valve, and means for varying the pressure at Which said valve is operable.
2. Ina regulator, the combination of a valve casing,a valve having a stem, said valve being arranged in the casing and said stem being projected beyond the casing, a bracket secured to the casing, said stem beingslidably held by said bracket, a lever pivoted to the bracket, a link connecting said lever with the valve stem, and gravity actuated pressure controlled means for controlling the operation of said valve, means for varying the pressure at which said valve is operable, said last mentioned means including a spring, and means for varying the tension of said spring.
3. In a regulator, the combination ot a valve casing, a valve having a stem, said valve being arranged in the casing and said stem being projected beyond the casin a bracket secured to the casing, said stem elng slidably held by said bracket, a lever pivoted to the bracket, a link connecting said lever Wit-h the valve stem, gravity actuated pressure controlled means Jfor controlling the operation of said valve, means for varying the pressure at Which said valve is operable, said last mentioned means including a spring arranged upon the valve stem and reacting between the bracket, and an adjustable means provided upon said stem for varying the tension of said spring.
e. In a regulator, the combination of a valve casing, a valve having a stem, said valve being arranged in the casing and said stem being projected beyond the casing, a bracket secured to the casing, said stem being slidably held by said bracket, a lever pivoted to the bracket, a link connected to said lever and to said valve stem, a chambered member arranged upon one end of the lever, and variable means mounted on said lever outside said casing and cooperating With said chamber-ed member for controlling the operation o said valve.
In a regulator, the combination of a valve casing, a valve having a stem, said valve being arranged in the casing and said stem being projected beyond the casing, a bracket secured to the casing, said stem being slidably held by said bracket, a lever pivoted to the bracket, a link connecting said lever with the valve stem, a chambered member positioned on one end of said lever, a flexible conduit communicating With the interior of Said member and adapted to be connected to the discharge passage of a pump for conducting fluid under pressure from said pump to said chambered member, and variable means coeperable with said member for controlling the operation of said valve.
6. In a regulator, the combination of a valve casing, a valve having a stem, said valve being arranged in the casing and said stem being projected beyond the casing, a bracket secured to the casing, said stem being slidably held by said bracket, a lever pivoted to the bracket, a link connecting said lever with the valve stem, an air tight chambered member positioned on one end of said lever, a flexible conduit communicating with the interior or' said member and adapted to bc connected. to the discharge passage of a pump for con-
