IMPROVEMENT IN GLAZED PLAID PAPER.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,232, dated April 18, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN F. MARSH, of Springfield, in the county of Ham'pden and State of" Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Manufacturing Glazed Plaid Paper, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 and 2 represent top views of the coated and of the ruled and glazed-plaid paper to represent my improved mode of manufacturing glazed plaid paper.

The invention has reference to the manufacture of that class of glazed plaid paper known as plaidpaper, sothat the same may be made .in a more perfect and finished manner; and the invention consists in the method of coating, ruling, and glazing the paper by consecutive operations? The paper A is first coated with a preparation-such as is used ordinarily in making glazed plaid paper. This preparation or coating is made in various Ways, and of any suitable color or tint. The paper is then ruled, either by hand 01' by means of ruling-machines used by blank-book manufacturers, by being passed either in sheets or in continuous rolls on a movable bed under the rulingpens, of which as many rows are used as there are numbers of colors; or the paper may be stationary and the pens movable, as desired. The lines B may be drawn diagonally, straight, or irregularly across the paper, and crossed by transverse lines ruled in the same way, so as to produce an almost infinite variety of square, diamond. and other designs on the paper. The various lines may also be produced by means of an ordinary printing-press. After the paper has been ruled it is glazed in the usual way by the use of a stone or flint passing over it, or by means of a friction-calender, so as to produce the smooth and polished surface.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The method herein described of manufacturing glazed plaid paper, consisting of the following steps consecutively performed, viz., coating the paper with an ordinary glazing preparation, ruling the glazed surface in suitable colors and designs, and finishing or glazing the coated and ruled surface bypolishing or pressing the same, as and for the purpose set forth.
