Description

June 10, 1930. J, SHRUM I 1,762,248
THREAD PROTECTOR Filed Nov. 8, 1927 IN VE N T01? Patented June 10, 1932 UNIT D 'TT'ES PATENT OFFICE PETER J. SERUM, OE ivioNAcA HEIGHTS, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR To PITTSBURGH ScREw AND BOLT CORPORATION, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA THREAD PROTECTOR Application filed November 8, 1927. Serial NO. 231,842.
This invention relates to improvement in thread protectors.
In Patent No. 985,94(i,issued to me under date of March 7,1911, discloses a thread protector similarin construction to the present invention, but is unlike the present invention as will be readily understood as the specification progresses.
An object of this invention is to provide a thread protector which is easily applied andwhich provides effective protectionfor threads as well as the shoulders of the tool or other device to which the protector is applied and in addition to affording such protection to form an effective seal about the threads.
Another object of this invention is to pro vide a thread protector having the above} 4: characteristics and means associated thereaddition to the thread g g g element 12 with for lubricating the threads to be pro-" tected and preventing the access of water or other foreign matter thereto.
These and other objects are obtained by means of the protector illustrated by the single sheet of drawings, in which,
Figure 1, is an end view of the protector embodying the invention,
Fig. 2, is a sectional view takenalong the line IIII of Figure 1.
Fig. 3, is an elevational view of a thread other threaded article to be protected having the usual spiral thread extending backwardly along its end, over which the protector is to be inserted sufliciently far to completely protect the threads.
The protector comprises a thread engaging-or ring holding element 12, which may be completely circular or of any desired circular continuity, but having separateends as shown, so as to provide for resiliency and adjustment. "The thread engaging element a thread engaging flange 13, the function '12 is turned inwardly at one end providing of which is to engage the thread when the ring is inserted over the article to be protected and operating to hold it fixedly in place. The ring 12 is provided with a number of locking or holding tongues 14 for engaging and cooperating with an outer protecting ring 15. The outer protecting ring 15 is cylindrical in shapeand is provided with an outer, inwardly turned annular flange 16 which operates to protect and reinforcefthe end of the threaded pipe 11 aridito cooperate with the locking tongues "Lon" the thread engaging element 13. In
17, such as felt which is adapted to carry a lubricant for lubricating the threads disposed on the end of the pipe 11. The strip 17 is positioned around the inner walls of the thread engaging element 12, so that when the protector is placed in position on the end of the pipe 11 the strip 17 lies between the thread engaging element 12 and the threads on the end of the pipe '11 to be protected. It can be seen from the above that when the outer protecting ring 15 is positioned on the thread engaging element 12 that the felt strip 17 is caused to be to be protected.
The present protector ring 12 and thread engaging element 17 have diameters slightly larger than the corresponding diameters of the protecting ring and thread engaging element employed in my above mentioned patent for accommodating the lubrieating pad between the thread engaging element and the threads to be protected, also the flange 13 of the present invention is slightly Wider than the flange 43 employed with my above mentioned protector.
The present thread protector prevents water, dust or the like from injuring the threads and positively seals the threads and pressed firmly in contact with the threads maintains them lubricated and in ready operable condition.
While .I have illustrated and described this lubricating pad in connection with my above mentioned patent, it will be obvious that this pad may be adapted for use with other thread protectors by making such changes in the protector for which its use is desired to accommodate the lubricating pad. Other changes, modifications, substitutions, additions and omissions may be made in the present protector without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended'claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent on, is :v
1. The combination of a thread protector comprising a plurality of concentric rings having a thread engaging flange on the inner ring thereof, of a lubricating pad disposed on the inner surface of the protector adjacent the said thread engaging flange.
2. A thread protector comprising an inner ring having a thread engaglng element, an outer ring for receiving the inner ring, a pad around the interior of the inner ring,
v and means for locking one of-the said rings in fixed relation with the other.
3. A thread protector comprising an inner ring having a thread engaging flange, a

cant pad disposed on the inner surface of the inner ring.
5. The combination in a thread protector of a lubricating pad, an inner ring -adapted to embrace the said lubricating pad having a thread engaging flange and locking tongues and an outer ring adapted to 'embrace said inner ring and to be fixedly engaged by said tongues.
6. In combination in a thread protector, a yielding pad for engaging threads to be protected, a resilient member surrounding said pad and having a thread engaging flange formed thereon, and a rigid sleeve encircling said member for holding said flange in thread engaging position.
7. In combination in a thread protector, a yieldlng pad adapted to engage threads to be protected, a resilient member surroundlng'said pad and having a thread engaging flange at one end thereof and at least one loclnngtongue at the other end thereof, a r1g1d ring surrounding said member for presslng said flange and said pad in thread
