Description

S. W. YOUNG.
METHOD OF PREPARING EYELET STOCK.
No. 176,114. Patented Apr11l1,1876.
FIGH- WITNESSES. mvgmn.
MPETERS. FNOTD-UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON W. YOUNG, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE HOMOGENEOUS METAL MANUFACTURING COMPANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN METHODS OF PREPARING EVELET-STOCK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,1 [4. dated April 11, 1876; application filed February 24, 1876.
1" 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SoLoMoN W. YOUNG, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Method of Preparing Eyelet-Stock; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing, making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof.
Figure 1 shows a sample of the wire. Fig. 2 shows the same after being rolled down. Fig. 3 is the same after being punched.
The object of my invention is to reduce the amount of waste in the manufacture of eyelets; and consists in the method of preparing the stock, hereinafter described.
It is well known that the present methods of manufacturing eyelets are attended with much waste of stock, such waste not unfrequently reaching twenty per cent.
In my invention, instead of punching the eyelets from thin strips or sheets of metal, I
draw the metal into wire of a suitable size, as shown in Fig. 1, having in view the size of the eyelet desired, and subsequently roll or flatten the same to the exact width necessary, as shown in Fig. 2. 'The metal so prepared is then fed to the dies in a continuous strip or wire, and the eyelets are punched therefrom with a reduction of waste of about fifteen per cent. A piece of such metal, after being punched, is shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The method of preparing eyelet-stock herein described, consisting in the drawing of the metal into wire, and the subsequent rollin g or flattening of the same, as and for the purposes specified.
SOLOMON W. YOUNG.
